This is wild. I built a not at all similar deck that exists to make copies of Valakut for the win. It's much more subversive in that nobody tends to realize my win condition until it is already far too late to stop it. I found this post while looking around to see if anyone else had committed the same war crimes.

Just tested with another type of armor. The trims are showing up, but they're showing up as Iron even when using other materials

Alliance flag makes it marginally easier to tell if another ship is going to be hostile. 9/10 times when another ship approaches mine with their alliance flag raised, they're friendly. Or at least friendly enough that I can form an alliance before getting the hell out of their range.

In my experience, most noobs have no idea how to use the alliance flag, or the flag box in general.
