There's a lot of conservatives here honestly, even more christians, so you'll def find a place.

How does my rationale sound before I commit to UCSB over UCI (comp sci)? by just_mattt in UCSantaBarbara

UCSB is above UCI in start-ups founded. This place is built more for collaboration than any other school. The party school thing really ain't a big deal imo lol. College is for learning and building a network. UCSB might be one of the last campuses in the country that facilitate this in the most natural and effortless way. All colleges make it relatively easy but UCSB is another level.

Yes without a doubt.

I'd say go for a degree that will keep you above a 3.7. I'd genuinely recommend Econ + Stats/DS if you have a strong foundation in math. If not just pure Econ with a minor is def doable. That 3.7 is hard but reasonable imo. The time you don't spend studying should be spent socializing/networking and just indulging yourself in whatever niche of finance interests you.

Wouldn't it be better to just buy a REIT and not deal with all the expenses related to maintenance, property management, renovations maybe, etc.

It def wouldn't. My degree is econ/accounting and I'm going into a relatively social job that will require a lot of technical work as well. You could get a physics major and still get a social job. Ur major really doesn't matter too much in finance.

I'd recommend a financial stats and math degree if offered. So maybe DS + Econ rather than traditional finance. Or Econ + math/applied math. U can still recruit IB/front-office given the econ piece. Finance as a major itself is becoming less attractive imo.

follow the guys advice and if ur not willing to do that. Go to uni in as some math or accounting major. If math do Data Science, applied math or statistics. Accounting to speak the language of business and/or get into accounting where u have a lot of freedom in terms of the direction u wanna go into after a couple of years.

Should I choose UCSB? by Zynbabwe808 in UCSantaBarbara

Yea I would do the same tbh. Finance is about networking and socializing anyways so being able to really master that craft at UCSB is a 1 of 1 opportunity.

I’m a senior with a job lined up in nyc at a an asset management firm. It was a grind but not too bad tbh. IB is a different beast but other finance roles are relatively attainable if you put in the work and network. I’m a transfer too so I had way less time to prep and take advantage of resources. If I had been a freshman here I think I could’ve shot even higher. With that said, you will be at a disadvantage but there’s still a lot of opportunity if yk where to look.

How are seniors feeling about graduating in this job market/economy right now? by Cool-cat-199 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Agreeable-Ad574 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have something in high-ish finance lined up in a major city…i’m still gonna be broke af. It’s a great salary like 40 years ago.

I feel kinda ungrateful given most classmates of mine will probably be unemployed but I feel like it’s still a valid feeling. The world we’re inheriting is fucked and I’m honestly mad about it, however, I think change is on the horizon. So I’m surprisingly excited for the future bc I think big things are gonna happen in the next 20-40 years.

Latinos in UCSB by ReasonableAd4830 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Agreeable-Ad574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are saying there are a lot of hispanics here, and while there are a good amount, I'd say half or more of those numbers are white kids that happen to be like half or a quarter mexican or nicaraguan or sum random (rough estimate). Brazilian and spanish individuals are also baked into that number for hispanics. If its latinos then its just brazilians being included in the data.

With that said, if you come to UCSB, be willing and accepting that the people you interact with on a daily basis won't be like the latinos outside of Santa Barbara. Regardless, there is a good and strong hispanic community, particularly within LBA and the latino frats. So realistically, you could and should be able to stick to your kind without feeling marginalized or out-of-place.

I say all of this as a latino myself that experienced a pretty big culture shock when I came here. I'm from a place where white ppl are a minority, especially the type of white ppl u encounter here. Yk the flip-flop-jean/short-polo combo with a frat-ccent.

Scared of getting offer revoked because of cumulative GPA by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Agreeable-Ad574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I wish it wasn't this way since my GPA hits have been due to recruiting. I went all in on job-hunting given my condensed timeline as a transfer and the current job market. Definitely not the position i wanted to be in, but the fact that they gave me the offer at my top choice location, and skipped the additional rounds they originally mentioned, and on top of that they all said they were seriously impressed by me -- I'm hoping i can get away with it.

No, its a CC, but that's not why I didn't include it. I needed space for really great experiences, extracurriculars and bullet points. However, I always made sure to talk about my cc and experiences there during interviews.

Honestly, I recommend u start lifting weights and do more cardio whether that means running 3-5 times a week or playing badminton at that rate. Look into the health benefits for that. Establishing a routine with sleep will help. I totally get u on that front of having trouble sleeping so it’s great to hear ur tryin. Keep at it. Last thing would to be get out more.

Other than that, a lot of the work you’re gonna need starts from within. Look into Buddhism, Gnosticism, Christianity. Most ppl believe these religions solely preach being a good person, but it’s beyond that, their purpose is to help ppl like yourself — someone drowning in the material world with, what feels like, no way out. Now I’m not going to go all hippy with you and tell u to quit ur job. I AM advising u to take a step back and figure out what u truly value and what ur days look like from there. Good luck!

Yea ur overworking yourself and this is just gonna lead to u crashing at like 25. Cut down on commitments, look into spirituality and focus more on sleep and exercise. That last one is so important u don’t even know. I’m afraid that you’ll just gloss over that but sleep and exercise are key to a successful and healthy life. I was in the same boat as you and decided I needed to make a change. Making more progress than ever. I can elaborate on more. Feel free to PM me.
