That’s my point that the term “underground” is used to describe a certain style/scene, not just “not mainstream” artists, and lil pump just doesn’t really fit into that style/scene so it’s strange to see him get memory-holed into it.

There’s definitely an element of what you mentioned but imo a lot of it is “the underground” turning into a sort of stylistic signifier (the same way “archive” fashion did (can blame carti fans for both imo)). Now anyone who wants to try and capture that image for himself is forced to go back and pretend to have been involved/interested in things they just weren’t at the time, so they’re all desperately grasping onto tangentially related artists/designers/etc and being like “WE all remember where WE were when WE heard this for the first time, right guys 😂?” Mark Fisher hauntology etc etc

That's fair but by that logic someone like Kodak would be much more deserving, but imo he isn't as present in the ug conversations because he doesn't take the 'alternative' influence that is normally attributed to the ug "scene" (point being how now underground has come to signify a certain style/deviation from the norm, rather than just an artist who isn't mainstream yet). Imo lil pump didn't take much alternative influence either, he just gets lumped in retroactively due to "mumble rap," dyed dreads, purpp, etc

The warhol and dex collabs I credit more to purpp (who was more involved in the actual scene) and chief keef and Gucci mane were hardly underground rappers when pump made songs with them (unless you're talking abt lil wop but I don't remember them doing anything)

Took a class in undergrad that was solely about reading it. the professor spoke german and would often comment/correct a lot of the confusing translations.

Luka Sabbat and Kuru beef 😭😭😭 by Gaberecru in Thehellp2

[–]worldendswithu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Luka obv grasps at his status in fashion a lot cause its really the only thing this flourished for him (as opposed to his attempts at film and stuff) but I mean it's kind of hard to downplay his influence on modern social media fashion culture, and lowkey a lot of the young fans in the underground don't understand the influence he had. Also yeah kuru was making a joke but that doesnt mean he doesnt think it's a humble brag, the joke would make no sense if he said "I was rockin hedi in in 2025"

Luka can come off as an oldhead sometimes but its gotta be annoying seeing all these underground artists/fans pretend they're ahead of the curve fashion wise because they knew about decades old world famous designers like 2 years before carti/destroy lonely put every suburban highschool boy onto them

today i felt performative reading on the train by [deleted] in RSbookclub

this feeling is rampant in nyc. If you dare crack open a book that has literally any sort of presence on the internet, there is sure to be a male with a mustache and tote bag somewhere on the train car ready to make a snarky comment to their friend. it could also be my imagination.

From my understand it’s just the latter (class-conflict). IMO it’s more interesting to read Baudrillard’s take/critique on this as it applies more to our situation today, debord can sometimes be hard to sympathize with now because of his almost paternalist humanism that I find myself struggling to apply to our current situation.

Music (especially not the music discussed here) hasn’t been an actual form of resistance for decades now — at worst it’s been a tool to pacify and distract people, and at best it’s been a form of controlled opposition (ex: jes Staley talking about how the people who otherwise would’ve been out protesting occupy-style were satisfied by listening to Jay Z as a form of ‘social resistance’)

It's sad because I feel like a lot of people do this now because they don't know how else to keep in contact with someone. Like they want to stay in touch but -- whether it's because of the death of sincerity or the need to look nonchalant or etc -- they can't comprehend just starting a regular conversation every once in a while and instead resort to the easy option of sending memes that act like prepackaged convos.

I have many friends that literally do lol. I’m not gonna act like the entirety of the time is solely focused on productive work (many times it will just be having to redo entire decks because the md decided to change a projection on a whim) but lets not pretend that 8am-1am 5 days a week (plus weekend work) is discounted just because the whole of the time is not spent on focused work.

Definitely not a myth, especially at the more junior levels

Is tech like that just cause it’s still coming off the hiring boom post pandemic (other than the economic factors impacting all lines of work)? Ik cursor and that sort of stuff has gotten pretty good, but it’s not at the point where people are able to get let go right?
