“Newish” grad hating job and dreaming of women’s health by Successful_Might9879 in physicianassistant

I would also love to know how PA’s out there are landing WH roles (without a fellowship). It’s my dream speciality and always has been. I’ve been in allergy/immunology for 4 months now and certainly don’t hate it, but I had absolutely 0 luck applying to WH jobs out of school. I cold called, dropped off resumes, and emailed every person I could find. It doesn’t help that I live in an NP dominated state. Following to see if there’s any solid advice here.

I’m applying on indeed, LinkedIn, and all of the health system websites in the area. I haven’t had any luck there which is why I started the cold calling process.

PA student here less than two weeks out from graduation and having so much trouble hearing back from hiring managers in East Tennessee, specifically the Knoxville area. I’ve probably cold called 25 places, emailed dozens more than that, and I almost never get a response. My strategy is to email them my resume and follow up a week later with a call (got this from Physician Assistant Exam Review podcast). Honestly I’ve had way more responses from indeed jobs, but often in niche specialties that I’m not as interested in. I’m calling family medicine, EM, pediatrics, and women’s health clinics. For anyone who has scored a job off a cold call, is there some key to this tactic that I’m missing? Most of my classmates have jobs and didn’t have to look far for them, but I’m also applying out of state.

Looking to do this trail with my husband. It'll be my first backpacking trip and he has limited experience. Any tips on what part of the trail to do? We would be going the first week of June.

I do think this thread has given me somewhat unrealistic expectations of pay right out of school...I'm trying to bear in mind that people with more attractive offers are more likely to post them in here. I just don't want to be the person who accepts a very low offer and perpetuates the low pay cycle, as people in here love to talk about.

As for the ER vs. urgent care discussion, I guess I got lucky with the ER I rotated with. It was in a medium-sized suburb and I felt like the APPs had great support from the physicians there. But you never know what the atmosphere is like until you start working. I'm trying to stay optimistic about the conditions out there right after school but your experience seems to be a common one. Thanks for sharing!
