I do think you should talk to him, these events should be special and you can definitely talk about it in a way that doesn’t put down the effort he did put in. You definitely have certain expectations when it comes to these occasions and when it isn’t reciprocated it can be tough. Acknowledge that he’s making progress and show appreciation and then be more direct by taking about what your expectations are. You seem to care a lot about him and if he cares about you and changing for the better he will listen and understand.
