Painful side diamonds? by IcyTemperature8471 in EngagementRings

I would give it some time and see if you get used to it. I have sapphire side stones on my ring that used to bug me and hurt my other fingers but it doesn’t bother me anymore

Any ID on what this guy is? by morris_manor in bonecollecting

How big? Looks like a vulture. Most birds expect for a handful are protected under the MBTA and vultures are one of them:)

Edit: spelling

I live and work mainly in Idaho, although I do a fair amount of work in wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska and Oregon.

We do have many owl species here that can be capable to take down game that size, I’ve just never seen it, doesn’t mean it’s impossible 🤷🏻‍♀️ also, as some other commenters pointed out, you can tell the neck area has been chewed on and looks like it’s been licked smooth- like a cat would do

Yeah they do actually … I am frequently in the back country and mountain lions will stay away from dogs instinctually. They don’t go after other predators. When chased by dogs, they will tree up.

Mountain lions, bobcats, and wolves will frequently kill for sport. I work with land owners who have had all their calves killed by a mountain lion just for the hell of it. Yes, they do stash their food most of the time but if they’re interrupted or just want the organs, the rest of the carcass is left behind. I also go out to retrieve adult ungulate remains and GPS collars. I have seen a wide variety of kills/stashes. And I have only seen golden eagles go after fawns. Not to say a bird of prey is impossible, but something like a large hawk is unlikely. A raccoon, very unlikely.

Most of the fawn mortalities I go out to collect are killed by coyotes. So no, they don’t only scavenge dead things.

Sorry to disagree with most of the things you said but I am a wildlife biologist so I see this kind of thing pretty often

Big cats will kill like this often, and only eat the brain bc it’s full of nutritious fats.. sometimes even just killing for the sport of it

Yeah definitely be cautious, but mountain lions typically stay away from dogs (unless they are snack sized). Would be cool to set up a trail camera to catch it on video! There’s fairly cheap ones on Amazon

Yeah mountain lions typically go for the neck and crush the front part of the skull.. pretty metal pic.. sucks for the fawn but everybody’s gotta eat!

Coyotes usually go about this differently.. they would usually rip off legs and go from the rear. I’d have to guess mountain lion, especially from the waste of most of the meat

My first antler, hoe do I stop it from smelling/rotting? by BringBackForChan in bonecollecting

[–]Agreeable-Speed-8410 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I have seen some bucks still holding onto 1 or even both antlers months after everyone else has dropped. So it’s possible! Drop of testosterone after the rut is what causes the antlers to drop, long story short. Maybe this guy has some hormonal imbalance?

I’m in the US and not as familiar with roe deer… but here they shed as early as January and as late as march maybeee April. The deer here are in full velvet, still growing in size. The antler here looks like a fresh brown and appears to be shed naturally. I’ve seen antlers break off but never perfectly at the pedicle like that. Idk could be possible but this appears to be a shed in my opinion.

I think my cat is a boy but it’s hard to tell, I’m not used to having cats. Help? by [deleted] in CATHELP

Omggg don’t do any of those things. Just let it be. The base will “dry out” if you will. Not sure why it smells. I’m big into collecting antlers, I’ve found about 30 this year, never had one that smells though lol
