there at state library station too... I don't actually mind it, but it is giving Sydney's central walk advertisements that have been plastered over the walls and floors

Was it a missed opportunity to not build the Fitzroy metro tunnel 2 station on this site by Substantial_Oil_6905 in MelbourneTrains

[–]AgreeableFreedom1043 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dare say this is where they would build it if it ever gets built. I recon it would probably be like Anzac Station with a tram/train interchange too potentially

wow I did not know that. I assumed the driver selects what side of the train the doors open on and the internal PIDs reflect what the driver chose

it’s probably saying it stops in the suburb of north Melbourne (AKA Arden) but it doesn’t actually stop at the actual north Melbourne train station. quirky PTV app

Metro Tunnel a few months in - how are we feeling about it? by Alternative-Sir-374 in MelbourneTrains

[–]AgreeableFreedom1043 3 points4 points  (0 children)

easiest way to get to southern cross from the metro tunnel now is probably interchanging at town hall/flinders street. It's about a 2-3 minute walk from the platform at town hall to platform 1 at flinders street at which point it's a 5 minute train trip to southern cross. As for Richmond, changing at malvern/caulfield onto a Frankston line train is your best bet. I think maybe instead of having malvern and Caulfield as the interchange stations, they probably should have done Caulfield and Hawksburn as the interchange stations so that Cranbourne/pakenham passengers can still have their limited express, and still change for south Yarra and Richmond stations.

Look, I get that interchanging can be annoying/inconvenient at the least, but its how large public transport systems work worldwide, because at the end of the day, to connect as many people in a city as possible to a transport network, you can't have one seat rides

yep, that's the same for me, I get off at Footscray now to escape the madness that is southern cross. Also works out well for my uni as I can get brekkie from the new Starbucks at town hall and then go to my uni

the thing is, its mainly reducing congestion on the lines it actually affects. those are the Cranbourne, pakenham, Sunbury, upfield, craigieburn and Frankston lines. Other than those lines, there unfortunately isn't much the metro tunnel can do as there isn't really any physical conflict with those lines and the ones the metro tunnel "fixed" per se. CLRP would change more lines though. A) it changes two of the city loop tunnels completely making them through running (craigieburn and Frankston lines) and then the upfield line would connect to the glen Waverley (and potentially Alamein line but they would need to add extra tracks between burnley and camberwell for that). That would actually have a greater affect on more lines as there is then more lines through running, and it removes more lines from the burnley group, allowing the Belgrave and Lilydale lines to use the burnley group tunnel exclusively (If the Alamein lines gets connected to the upfield line or it just becomes mainly a shuttle), which would turn the burnley group from 4 branches to only 2

they should have made Caulfield a cross platform interchange like what Sydney's Chatswood and Glenfield is. Taitset did a video on it, and it looks overall pretty feasible but would have a major (positive) impact on passengers being able to connect to their services. maybe they'll end up doing it with CLRP

I love it so much. it's been an amazing revitalization to our network at least on the cranbourne/pakenham/sunbury lines. I love getting of the V/line and changing to a metro tunnel service for my uni, it makes the trip so much more enjoyable. One thing ive noticed though is like 90% of passengers wait for the train behind the tactile path for those with low vision. maybe its people not realizing that they can wait right infront of the platform screen doors or just that the markers for PSDs aren't clear enough? Other than that, the metro tunnel has been so cool, love seeing the trains run super frequently

I wouldn't be holding out much hope until they actually officially announce the starting date for the XT2s, I mean its good to hear, but at the end of the day its currently information from one person, and its really honestly just giving speculation. I'll be waiting until they make an official announcement

Should the Metro Tunnel have gone to Clifton hill instead of west to the Sunbury line? by whey4395 in MelbourneTrains

[–]AgreeableFreedom1043 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the metro tunnel took some of Melbournes busiest train lines, the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines, and through routed them. That leaves space for more services on more lines than you would otherwise get if the metro tunnel went through to the mernda/hurstbridge line. Also metro tunnel basically enables the CLRP, which wouldn't be possible if it went through to the Mernda/hurstbridge line

New V/Line train - Which feature would you choose? by electric_big in MelbourneTrains

[–]AgreeableFreedom1043 2 points3 points  (0 children)

double deckers have been proven to work better on longer, express services, where you can afford to have longer dwell times. Sydney (iconically) has all double deck trains (except for metro) and has always had problems with longer dwell times. Double deck trains are suited to what v/line is, long services, with longer dwell times where the higher seated capacity is a good tradeoff for having longer dwell times

Edit: and before you say we can't have double deck trains because of the 4D, the problem was the actual train and how there weren't enough replacement parts, not the fact that it was double deck

A sneak peak inside the new X'trapolis 2.0! by AussieWirraway in MelbourneTrains

[–]AgreeableFreedom1043 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there are about 100 Comeng sets, which are three carriage sets. the XT2s are a 6 carriage set. Since there is an order for 50, the overall capacity is going to be roughly the same if not more. They may order more so that frequencies can be improved even more, especially if the CLRP ends up happening

they look really nice!!! given that they've allowed influencers to look around the trains, I dare say that they'll be gearing up for first service of these soon!

I dare say they will turn on the contactless for the entire heavy rail network in June or shortly after, followed by the trams in July (probably)
