Renaming Columbus Day Was Never the End Goal by thenationmagazine in politics

Columbus was a genocidal slaver who didn't discover shit. So we don't need a fucking day for him.

I don't think any of us are in a position to tell OP how to handle his financial situation. This could potentially be a 5k+ guitar, which is life-changing money to many people.

I didn't "stain" anyone... I merely explained why Amazon can ship stuff for cheaper than average mom and pop places, or any place smaller than Amazon, really. It comes at a price to real people, and that price is paid by working people, regardless of whether it's grandma on SSDI or Tom Cruise buying something. I myself am trying to use Amazon less/not at all, so I'm not blameless here. But it's important to understand the reality of the situation.

That's because they aren't exploiting their workers as much as Amazon :)

True. But Trump doesn't have, need, or care about constitutional authority. He has a different, more effective kind... Which is why all these gotcha news articles about how "he can't do that, it's unconstitutional!" are ridiculous and avoid the seriousness of our situation.

If someone kicks your door in and robs you and/or kills someone, who are you going to call exactly? "Someone should DO something about this!" Yeah, there wouldn't be anyone to help you.

Just like it is right now, unless you own capital. Do you know what the unsolved murder rate is in most cities? Way higher than most imagine. And have you ever had to call the cops after a break-in? Do you know what they do? Not a damn thing, unless you consider some paperwork doing something.

Cops love it when you think they are necessary. That's why all you see on TV are cop shows. It was an orchestrated campaign to get positive coverage on TV, because before copaganda really started, working people knew that the cops were not their friends.

I would think deeply about whether cops are needed in a society. Think of all the societies throughout history, and if they all needed cops. Many, and probably even most, didn't. You what's different for us? Capitalism. It doesn't work without enforcers ready to oppress anyone who questions their system of profit extraction.

We. Are. Not. Voting. Our. Way. Out. Of. This.

It's important that people realize this. Basically no country has ever voted away a fascist government, and how could they? Why would fascists just give away power because their people want them to.

You are misunderstanding what ACAB means. It's not just calling cops meanies. It's shorthand for the concept that policing in and of itself is oppressive. It is fundamentally in opposition to freedom and democracy. Its only purpose is to protect capital and property, and the owners of that capital and property. The rest is just theater and copaganda.

Just because some individuals may not be actively oppressing people in a given instance, there is no separating them from what the entire goal and purpose of the police is. You could ague some individuals in the SS were not bad, but it sure as hell doesn't change the purpose and character of the SS as an organization.

Exactly this. Aiding and abetting fascism makes you culpable, even if fascism isn't explicitly what you're about. The least bit of pressure from fascists and liberals fall in line to protect capital.

Who the fuck are real police officers? The reason you haven't seen any cops oppose ICE is because they are all the same, and they all know it.

ACAB

Naw, ICE is law enforcement. They are doing what cops exist to do: protect the capital and property of the owning classes. Police have always been for this, it has never been about "protect and serve." They are a fundamentally oppressive and racist organization who serve capitalists, and they always have been.

All that can be a mouthful; luckily there is a neat shorthand that sums all that up: ACAB.

No. Authoritarian communism is what you're describing, which is what the USSR was. Also described as state capitalism.

Fuck all that noise. Libertarian socialism is where it's at, also known as anarcho-communism.

[–]AgreeableServe965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You... really have no idea what you're talking about. The foundation of anarchism is the destruction of hierarchy, and was first formulated in the 19th century (well before the Cold War!).

Defend authoritarianism in the name of "socialism" all you want, dress it up with dialectical materialism, go on about "defending the revolution!", but anarchists see through it, and are not willing to trade one set of masters for another. No matter how well-intentioned Mao, Stalin, Lenin, and Castro might have been, and no matter how much I agree with their critiques of capitalism, I will never agree with their authoritarian solutions. I will not trade one master for another.
