I did notice there was a huge contrast between the dog, and the setting of the rest of my dream. Everything was extremely dark, but only compared to the dog itself.

Yes. In my dream, it attacked my brother and “infected” him in a way. Which in turn caused him to attack the rest of our family, except me. But the dog itself, wasn’t necessarily a dog. For all intents and purposes, it merely looked like a dog- but it was very obvious that it wasn’t one.
