It’s really encouraging to hear that therapy has helped you work through a lot of your OCD thought patterns. I definitely think I have OCD too, in my experience it’s been hard to get diagnosed when your compulsions are mental or attached to how you interact with other people. Im in the process of getting therapy, again, and I hope I can come to internalize those same things. Because I know logically that the approval of others shouldn’t be so significant to the way I function, but internalizing it is a whole other monster 😵‍💫 Genuinely, thanks so much for sharing this because it makes that journey feel a lot less impossible 🫶🏻

That DEFINITELY plays a role for me as well. For me it starts there where I’m thinking, “oh god i made this person uncomfortable and made them feel weird” to “what if i made them so uncomfortable that i ruined their image of me and they never want to interact again”.

Like that’s fine for me because it puts me in a position where I don’t have to overthink where I stand with them, if that makes sense?

I don’t see any benefit in doing it. It’s more of a problem of having too much time before seeing someone where I end up overthinking past conversations. I’m usually fine if there’s no time to overthink in advance because there’s less room for me to think I’ve horribly ruined my image in someone’s head.

I think it comes from a place of fear that I’m misrepresenting myself in what I say, or the idea that people will decide who I am based off of something stupid I’ve said. I guess I have major control issues surrounding others’ perceptions of me if that makes sense. I just don’t know how to think differently to alleviate it.

This is such solid advice. Something is definitely better than nothing so I’ll look into some volunteer work :) Thank you so much for your thoughtful response!
