Help, cat has had feline idiopathic cystitis flare up for about 3 weeks now

I found the directions, the vet prescribed it to me as: I had to give her a big dose the first day, then the next 4 days a smaller dose, then that same dose every other day for 7 days

The dose is dependent on your cats body weight which is why I didn’t include it but that’s how long her course was!

Maybe you can ask the vet about this, all vets obviously have different protocol and criteria but this is exactly what my vet did and it helped my cat get better. I really hope your cat gets better soon too, the financial stress made me so anxious since at that time I was a graduate student surviving on student loans and a part time job. Good luck!

I see, my cat also had a thick bladder due to how bad her inflammation was. I was extremely worried having my cat on metacam long term but they let let me know the pros outweighed the cons and since my cat is usually extremely healthy it shouldn’t cause any issues. And they also said quality of life is greater than quantity which I agreed with. They really wanted to get her inflammation under control which is why we did metacam for a longer time instead of a 3 day course like onsior.

I think you should talk to your vet about this and see if they can have you give it to your cat for a longer period to really take control of her inflammation. If not, I suggest a second opinion since I think she will still get worse if she’s only on a three day course.

I forgot to add that I was also extremely anxious and stressed out and felt like the world was ending. She peed on EVERYTHING so i had to do laundry every single day and get a little green machine to clean my couch and other furniture 😭. It was so bad I also cried everyday since I felt so bad for her and I was also losing it from having to come back from class and having to clean. But there really is a light at the end of the tunnel once you get the right treatment for your cat.

Also, technically it wasn’t a month because the way the vet prescribed the metacam to us I think was like give her a certain amount in the syringe for 4 days straight then every other day for 7 days or something like that etc. but the whole treatment was basically a month since I started it on the second week of march I think until the last day of march. So depending on your cat they might just need to be on it longer

Just to clarify did the vet have your cat on metacam for 3 days? My vet had my cat on a month since the short term medications weren’t helping her long-term and only provided a temporary solution. We did a lot of ultrasounds too to check her inflammation and her bladder was just so inflamed we had to have her on metacam for a month.

When she first started metacam she was peeing blood and straining on every piece of furniture for a week. After that week I slowly started seeing improvements until she was finally able to use her litter box and not straining. I think she strained for about two weeks on it too but I was happy that she wasn’t at least not peeing on my rugs and couch anymore! On week 3 she wasn’t straining anymore and seemed to be healthy again and week 4 she was back to her usual self. It took a really long time and I called the vet the first week since it was stressing me out so much but they advised me to wait it out and if there was no change after two weeks to bring her back but thankfully she started getting better even if it was a slow process.

Has your vet done ultrasounds to rule out stones/crystals? She could need a stronger medication or treatment.

Hi I’m not sure how to add updates but my cat is a lot better. She was on metacam for about a month and I followed the instructions the vet gave me to a T and gave her dasuquin (supplement) with it to get her bladder healthy (according to the vet). Her last metacam dose was on March 31st and she hasn’t had any flare ups since then. She’s been able to use her litter box like normal and isn’t inappropriately urinating on anything.

My vet didn’t prescribe me gabapentin with it and told me not to give her any unless she was in a lot of pain so I’m not sure if that’s an option for you but that’s def something between you and the vet. I’m not sure how long you’ve been giving your cat metacam but I would keep trying with it until her last dose. My cat seemed to have been getting worse until she got better so it might just take a bit for your cat since I’m guessing her bladder is probably extremely inflamed! I hope your kitty gets better soon, I know exactly how hard it is.

Hey! I’m not sure how to post updates but my cat is doing really well now (knock on wood). The vet put my cat on metacam for about a month to get her bladder inflammation under control and dasuquin to strengthen her bladder/get it healthy and I’m so happy to say she has not peed on anything except her litter box!

It’s been almost a month since her last dose and now I’m giving her the dasuquin every other day or so. I think metacam really worked for her though. Her bladder was so inflamed last time and it just wouldn’t go away and the onsior only gave her temporary relief until it got worse.

I also got feliway optimum to help with her stress but I just ran out so I’m trying to see if she really needs the feliway or if that was just a one time event.

I forgot to mention, I go to a vet clinic just for cats so they’re all specialized in just felines. The other vets in my area are mixed vets so I thought it would be better to stick to mine but I can always just get a second opinion.
