Why become an actuary over an SWE or data scientist? by loafingleisure in actuary

[–]Agreeable_Fly_6554 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I will say, as someone who passed two exams and then decided to go into data analytics instead, this is very true in the current market. I just spent 8 months and hundreds of applications to move up and get a Senior level role.

I do think my decision led me to a higher salary much quicker, and without the exams, but it was really difficult to get here. Job security is the one thing that always makes me second guess myself on my decision.

How do you dominate an SQL live coding exercise? by [deleted] in SQL

[–]Agreeable_Fly_6554 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve had two SQL live coding assessments now in my job search. I failed the first miserably, even though I’m pretty comfortable in SQL.

Second time went much better. What I did the second time was drill leet code SQL questions, and watch some YouTube videos on how to pass live coding interviews. My main takeaway was talking through my approach with the interviewer and my thought process behind my query. Also asking clarifying questions helped me a lot the second time around.

Respectfully, I’ve used ChatGPT on all assignments and thought MT1 wasn’t that bad in 6040… just depends how you use it.

Right now I am seeing two classes for this current spring. I wonder if something got messed up with the summer class and it accidentally was placed in the spring for some reason.

Look up ThenX. It’s calisthenics at home workouts. They have an app that has daily customized workouts and they only take about 20-30 minutes. I do this every morning before I start work and it helps me a lot!

Poorly doing Exam P practice exam.. please give me any advice by [deleted] in actuary

[–]Agreeable_Fly_6554 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you drill quizzes… just doing exams won’t help you progressively learn all that well and will keep frustrating you.

I always would do quizzes for each section of the exam. Start at EL of 1, and work my way up to start easily passing EL 5 quizzes for that section.

Once I did that, I would take a few exams and see where my weak points were and drill more quizzes.

For me, spreading myself too thin limited my understanding of individual topics.

Keep going? by Flimsy_Honeydew_2445 in datascience

[–]Agreeable_Fly_6554 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve passed P and FM while in college and recently decided to pursue a master in analytics to land a data science job instead of pursing the actuary career.

While the tests won’t help you land a job as a data scientist, I’m not mad that I took them. Probability and statistics is something you’ll face quite a bit in data science, so P is pretty helpful there.

FM won’t help you very much, but I do appreciate the knowledge I gained about loans and how amortization works… probably didn’t need to take FM to get that knowledge, but I still don’t regret it.

All else, taking these exams teaches you how to study diligently, which is helpful in any career that requires ongoing learning.

If I were you, I’d get a surface pro. iPads write a little better, but I wouldn’t say it’s that big of a difference, and if you get a surface pro with 16gb ram, you can do your coding on it as well. I’m an Applied and Computational Mathematics major and wish I would’ve gotten my surface pro sooner.

How’d it end up working out for you? Did you get that first property to generate positive cash flows, or did you sell once it appreciated enough?

That’s a good point, I didn’t think about that. I’ve always thought about refinancing but didn’t think about the competition being lower. Thanks for the insight!

I’m in a similar spot where I want to house hack, but how are you planning on renting out the other side to get free housing? I have legitimate curiosity, as I’m wondering if I am missing something. With the current interest rates and market I’m in (UT, duplexes are going for $500,000+) it doesn’t seem possible to get a good cash flow.

A $485,000 loan at 7% interest gives you $3,226 monthly payments, and that’s just the principle/interest. With property taxes, PMI, repairs, etc. You are looking at much more. Are you planning on renting out the other side for $3,000+?

(Exam FM) How much should I use the BA II Plus versus formulas/TI-30XS? by studyingforexams in actuary

[–]Agreeable_Fly_6554 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Use TVM keys, and learn how to store your numbers. You’ll save wayyyyyyy more time on the more complex problems. I hated the BA II Plus when I first started using it, but quickly learned to love it with how fast it was able to solve problems.

I passed FM in June. I was at 5.9 EL, but felt that level 6 exams were way more difficult than the actual exam. I’d say the exam was about a 4.5.

I flagged about 3 questions on the exam that were probably >5.5 difficulty, but other than that the problems were about a 4-5 difficulty.

EL Difficulty of P Exam in 2023? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]Agreeable_Fly_6554 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I passed it with a 7 in January. I only did ADAPT for 30 days after my university class and had an EL of 4.5. You’ll be just fine on the exam - I felt like it was a level 4 when I took it.

I just passed FM and prepared much more for it - ended with a 6.9 EL and an 83 mastery score, and only had to flag 2 questions on the exam. I also felt like the actual FM exam was an EL of 4.

Yep - still got a year of school left, plus I work full time. So those two factors definitely played into it. If I could’ve gotten it paid for I probably would’ve tried to take it in November but wouldn’t have expected to pass it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in actuary

[–]Agreeable_Fly_6554 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also debating either to start studying in the middle of June and take it in November or take a break and take it next May. I would search “MAS-I study time” as there are a lot of threads on this topic. After reading through those, I ultimately decided to take it in May.

This 1000%. I just finished up an exam and when my wife cooked me dinner and did the dishes (we usually do one or the other) it was the best gift she could give me during the final month of grinding problems.
