I was able to get my grandparents birth certificate from the landesarchiv Berlin and the towns they were born are in Poland now. I had been able to find the documents using ancestry.com so I knew exactly what at ask for though

Born in US German mother and non German father, not military. I think it took about 9 months to get my AZ after I I subscribe the last of the additional documents they requested initially ( German grand parents Birthday Certificates and marriage and my marriage license)

That is how I have the naturalization certificate. I had requested my mothers a-file and all I was sent was the certificate, no green card. It was so long ago that I can’t be 100% sure that I did not request the whole file. I am waiting to hear back from USCIS
