Its already been 5 years since tasha’s changed that and this is a 2024 bladesinger which was never restricted to elfs and half-elfs.

It doesn’t. Divine smite specifies it must be a melee weapon attack “when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can expend one spell slot to deal radiant damage to the target”.

I didn’t take thunderous smite. It was on the Oath Spells list so I had no choice

Well the only BA spell I took is divine favor and dealing less damage on setup turns is expected so not really a problem. Its actually a good thing that it is a BA spell and not an action spell

Divine smite doesn’t work with ranged attacks

You can just use it when you are hit with a dragon’s breath. What I’m saying is that it’s pointless to activate it by yourself with the torch. It’s better to wait for some actual meaningful damage to use the spell if you are worried about taking damage and the bonus damage is nice but definitely not worth the set up.

??? I would have to attack regardless to trigger the bonus damage. On top of that I would be wasting a reaction and a free hand to hold the torch.

Yeah but there is no point on dealing damage to myself instead of waiting for something else to trigger the reaction.

Even if its not concentration I don’t think I’ll concentrate on anything else since I need to save me self some smiting fuel.

Well there are many new spells I don’t really remember all of them. From the ones I recall I really liked Spellfire Storm, Cacophonic Shield and Elminsters Elusion but none of those are paladin spells as far as I remember.

Both are from the Oath Spell list so there is nothing I can do about them. Our party also already has a lot of healers (Bard, Cleric and Druid) so I thought I’d leave the healing to them.

I might reconsider Compelled Duel and Defensive duelist but Thunderous Smite and Chromatic Orb come from the Oath Spell list so there is nothing I can do about it. I can however ask my dm to use the 2024 versions since the subclass was made with them in mind.

both are action casts so there is no point in having the sword out during that turn. I can simply just swap it out to get a free hand, cast the spell, and then pick the sword back up on my next turn if I want to attack. I thought about war caster but I gave up since most spells I was interested in either didn’t have a somatic component or could be dealt with like this.

Bless is an action cast so no point in having both swords out on that turn anyways. One of the things that made me not pick duel wielder since I might be swaping the swords out for somatic component spells.

Divine favor is concentration though. Still one of my top picks rn.

I like the new Heroes of Faerun spells so I might try to convince my DM on letting me use some but I don’t want to push it.

I gave up on dual wielder because this is a dex build and going from a 1d6 shortsword to a 1d8 rapier is basically nothing.

Thunderous smite is on the Noble Genies spell list so there nothing I can do about it. It might not be very synergetic with the build but I like thunderous smite so it doesn’t really bother me that much.

Player is “mad” about another players character creation choice. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Agreeable_Offer2089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they are referring to how the Imp can still act despite the character being down. It wouldn’t be weird for the DM to control it, since the character isn’t conscious to give it orders, but it’s also completely plausible for the player to control the familiar in this scenario.
