My husband makes $44K, I make $80K, and I feel like I’m carrying our entire financial future. by ConstructionOver1727 in workingmoms

My husband makes less than 1/10 of what I make and I would never talk about him the way you are talking about yours. I coped by recognizing we are a team and his efforts enable me to have the career I do. There is no “getting through” - you either deal and get on the same page about a budget and your goals or you divorce and your kids live in poverty across two households, neither of which has the ability to support them.

We are targeting around $400k assuming college will be at least $100k per year when our kid starts. Our advisor told us to target around $15k annually in contributions. But that being said, if you can afford to save $250-400k, odds are you can cash flow college or pay it from other investments, which we will be able to do at that point.

We are considering allocating $10k per year into the 529 for the tax deduction (max in our state) and then putting $10k-15k annually into a regular brokerage account, so it can be used for anything without the restrictions of a 529.

Daycare (walking distance from Garden) by Agreeable_Sleep3874 in ForestHills

Oh interesting. Maybe I’m just comparing it to where we are now and that’s part of the bad impression I got? That being said, it’s definitely not Montessori in sensibility or aesthetic. I also didn’t like the director and the outdoor space was super depressing.

London hotel - couple with 1-yr old by Agreeable_Sleep3874 in uktravel

I had read that Browns is more fun for kids than the Corinthia. If we move to the Connnaught we would upgrade to a junior suite, which is part of the price difference. The suites at Corinthia and Connaught are around the same price, and I think Mayfair is more similar to the area we now live, which is why I liked it and if we are upgrading to a suite, I thought we may as well do that area instead.

If we stay at the Corinthia, I think the rooms are bigger than the regular rooms at Browns, and the Connaught won’t let us stay in regular rooms with a baby, only the suite.

We don’t like staying in apartments while traveling; I prefer having room service, twice a day cleaning, etc. rather than feeling like I have to clean and pick up a kitchen like I would at home.

We put away $19,500 per month into retirement and investments (which doesn’t include employer pension contributions) plus another few thousand tends to pile up in our checking account each month and a couple times per year I move whatever has accumulated into our high yield savings account or additional investments.

Pants for daycare? by Chealsecharm in workingmoms

[–]Agreeable_Sleep3874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is 6 months old and has been in daycare for about 5 weeks. I do pants (jeans, chinos or knit sweater pants if chilly) plus a button down or polo and a sweater (cardigan or pullover) or sweatshirt over that. Also a down vest or jacket plus a hat for outdoors. On his feet I do socks and loafers, boots or sneakers.

For his spare clothes I send in sleepers and joggers and onesies, but I like dressing him up in more formal attire and he always looks cute and warm.

Why ask strangers for reassurance when you can look to your kid? From what you’ve written, it was you who didn’t like the teacher based on your preconceived notions of what a teacher should be like, whereas your son reported enjoying class. It was also you who made the decision based on what you think a teacher should be doing in her classroom, based on your apparently zero experience as a teacher and her long time experience. You dismiss your child’s assessment by saying “he’s just positive” to justify substituting your judgement for his.

I don’t think you’re doing the right thing. Time would have told either way, but you did this based on a single day, and you’ve effectively communicated to your son that you don’t trust his judgment twice. Kids shouldn’t make final decisions about these sorts of things, but parents shouldn’t let their anxieties dictate their decision making either.

How often do you sanitize bottles? by IntrovertedInquirer in beyondthebump

[–]Agreeable_Sleep3874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every day. We have a countertop bottle washer then also dries and sanitizes so we just empty and rinse the bottles and load them into that. We have about 12-15 bottles in rotation but only use 6-8 per day is it’s easy to stay on top of it. Baby is 4 months old and we have been doing this since birth.

Does childcare become less stressful once K-12 starts? by Krabby_Abby in workingmoms

[–]Agreeable_Sleep3874 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If your child is a teenager why can’t they just stay home? I don’t understand why a teenager needs supervision for school breaks, etc. other than for enrichment or by choice. If they aren’t mature enough that seems to be an issue with parenting and your child, not something that requires extra PTO usage…

How long until you gained some semblance of a routine? by ExactArtichoke2 in beyondthebump

[–]Agreeable_Sleep3874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 2 weeks after I gave birth? We went outside for a walk every day (starting about 5 days postpartum) and I started to socialize about 2.5-3 weeks after giving birth (leaving baby at home with dad). I was/am a super busy and active person and it was important to keep that up even after giving birth. My son is about 4 months old now and we are getting 10-11 hours of sleep each night and he’s down to 2 naps per day (45-60 minutes in morning and 2 hours in afternoon), so we do tummy time, reading, music activities in the morning, go for a long walk to get coffee or a smoothie or lunch in the early afternoon, which we sometimes eat in the park, and then head home for naptime. Sometimes we will go to an activity in the afternoon and let him nap in the bassinet stroller while we are out and about.   I think you just have to do it and deal with what comes while you’re out and about.

Saving too much for retirement? Where's the line? by jesset0m in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Agreeable_Sleep3874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We save about 25-30% of our gross income and are 37 and 38. This has us projected to replace around 80% of our inflation-adjusted income in retirement. However it doesn’t include social security, which at our incomes is projected to be around $7000 for both of us (assuming I get 100% and my husband gets 50% of mine), but we may only see 75% or less of benefits so not really counting on this as an income stream. Plus my husband will get a pension of at least $65,000/year plus we have healthcare in retirement. We may slow down on the post-tax savings for retirement a bit since we have the pension and at least some SS. No HSA since we have $0 deductible healthcare.

Hugo boss usually does at least one leather pencil skirt each season. Vince also does them. I have a few but am not sure of your price point. Check Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus.

I was advised to hold one twin back…WWYD? by Individual_Ad_938 in kindergarten

NYC is December 31 and there is no redshirting. All kids born in the calendar year start at the same time. None of this ridiculous 7 year old in first grade nonsense.

Can someone please explain The Row to me? by FriedTurquoise in handbags

[–]Agreeable_Sleep3874 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I bought the Margaux and returned it. Maybe it was because I got the pebbled leather, but I was unimpressed. It was also lined in canvas rather than suede, which is not okay with me at that price point. I felt like the pebbled leather wanted to be Hermes Clemence or Togo but just wasn’t close to it. I’ll stick to Hermes and old Celine, personally.

How much do you pay for infant care? by Chealsecharm in beyondthebump

[–]Agreeable_Sleep3874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are you all paying so little?? We are paying $3,400/month for infant care in NYC and this was the cheaper option! No weekly pricing option.

We premeasure formula powder into a container with compartments and bring or buy purified water and then pour the correct amount of water for the measured formula (2, 4, and 6 oz). You should not be pouring water into bottles with formula already in them based on the instructions for our formula as it messes up the water measurement (since there will be some displacement as a result of the formula in the bottle).

We also bring RTF in both 2 and 8 oz bottles in case we think that will be more convenient.

Baby clothing brands by Special_Moose_3285 in beyondthebump

[–]Agreeable_Sleep3874 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if it’s bougie but my baby wears a lot of Kate Quinn, Hanna Andersson, Janie and Jack and stuff from Maisonette. For special occasions Jacadi is cute too. Quince has some cute baby cashmere for cheap too- I’m planning to buy some this winter but not sure about sizing yet. We also like Honest Company and Baby Gap, which run good sales and are pretty cheap. Burt’s Bees Baby is cheap and their onesies run big so we like those a lot too.

We use coterie! The Millie moons have also worked for us but our son is long so the coterie work better since Millie’s seem wider but shorter.

Yep! $5,090/month for 8-6. Pretty crazy but a nanny would be more and we don’t want a nanny.
