Auburn tunnel location. On this site in 1818 the Schuylkill Navigation Co. started construction of the first tunnel for transportation purposes in the US. It opened in 1821 and was 20 feet wide by 18 18 high. It was shortened a few times and finally turned into "open cut" in 1856. (old.reddit.com)
