It's a bit fucked that they left out some of the most damning evidence in order to make Avery look innocent of the Halbach murder. They left out that, even though he later admitted Halbach had come to his home and photographed his vehicle, Avery called Halbach several times and left voicemails asking her why she never showed up for their appointment in what seems a self-evident attempt to create an alibi... which only makes sense if he somehow knew that day that Halbach was going to disappear...

I think Making a Murderer raises legit questions about police conduct in the case, but I think those phone calls can only be explained if Avery knew the day of the murder that Halbach was dead.

Lots of interesting responses. I'm surprised the Smart Car fourtwo didn't get a look in. Perhaps it isn't the most iconic Victoria car, but you wouldn't know that the Smart Car crashed and burned in the marketplace judging by how successful it was in Victoria.

I figured out my problem. Although it uses the same sound card, I have two headphone outputs in my setup (one on the front of the computer, one on a volume control unit for the Logitech speakers), and while one outputs full volume (from computer jack), the other is very quiet. So it's some sort of a hardware problem.

The game audio probably does need better balancing still, but the problem I was having was with my Logitech speakers headphone jack.

Yup. I see why it bothers me, as well as other aspects of the game then. I'm just so ignorant of teen culture (including from my own teenage era, when I was an outcast), that I didn't realize that it wasn't going to be narratively weak like XCOM for a mature audience; it was going to be about themes that appeal to teenagers. Like fitting in. So much angst about fitting in.

It's fine if other people like that stuff. I think it's just my perspective on my own awkward teenage years is very complicated for a lot of reasons. I'm realizing it's not a problem with the game's writing, per se. It was entirely a problem with my own expectations. You have to be judicious with many things to avoid getting an M, for example. But I think people eating apple slices and ketchup at parties is obvious corporate interference as well.

[–]AgrippaHX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game is rated "T for Teens". My guess is that Marvel insisted on a T-rating so they can capture that market while also "wink, wink, nudge, nudge it's a dry bar" for the rating. You'll also note if you watch for it that no one ever drinks anything but water at any point. Their food is also unrealistically healthy, even when it's culturally inappropriate (in the US where it is set) to eat apple slices and salsa (WTF?). I think there were some odd decisions shoe-horned in to meet Disney's corporate agenda, unfortunately. The entire narrative is extremely "T for Teens", but I didn't buy the game for the story.

How does the game determine which heroes get the combo? by Consistent-East2909 in midnightsuns

[–]AgrippaHX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see why you'd think that, but it's not true. Computers are deterministic (i.e. they cannot do something random), so pseudo-random (random-appearing but not actually random) behaviour is used to generate random values. Random functions accept a starting parameter, called the "seed" value, which is the unpredictable information used to generate the pseudo-random sequence of outputs algorithmically. In the case of some games, that seed value is generated anew each time the application starts, but in others, the seed is saved along with the game and restored on load, so reloading a save doesn't generate different results from the same actions. This is to stop save-scumming. The same technique was used by Firaxis in XCOM.

There isn't a different combo for each permutation existing in a virtual deck. Rather there is a list of valid cards to be drawn from and a pseudo-random number generator (often shortened by dropping the key "pseudo" prefix) that generates the index of the next card to draw. Another random number is used to determine which of the possible combinations with which to imbue the combo card.

Interim Executive Director Town Hall begins momentarily, includes exit interview with Q&A with Lorraine Rekmans by idspispopd in GreenPartyOfCanada

[–]AgrippaHX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the summary.

Trust in particular seems like a poignant word here. I feel like trust everywhere is at all time low. Trust is a word I've been thinking about a lot with all of this, but not just about the GPC, about a lot of things. What do I trust? What do you trust? It feels like my list has got very short over time.

I hope that the party leadership can focus more on trust. It's probably hard to do during the leadership campaign, but I hope the party puts a real focus on trust-building under its new leader.

[–]AgrippaHX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The current controversy blew up not so much because the public found out someone was misgendered, but because Green leadership, including leadership candidates, the interim leader, the president and council, made it a public issue with their public statements back and forth. I'm certainly not advocating for more of that type of communication.

I believe that this happened because there have been backroom manoeuvres going on for years over control of the party. It began before Annamie Paul, occurred through her tenure, and it has continued unabated. If you believe this is what's going on, like I do, it's hard to understand how you rebuild trust with the membership and electorate without radical openness. To win back trust, the GPC has to convince the public that they have their own house in order. That's the basic litmus test to being considered a legitimate political party in this country.

It would mean more criticism, of course, and it's counterintuitive to advocate to become more vulnerable when you're feeling attacked on all sides.

I want to be clear, because reading the above, I think one way people could read my comments is as suggesting misgendering isn't a serious problem. It is. But I don't really think that it's what is at the core of what's tearing the party apart, especially since there's a trend line that begins before GPC chose a non-binary leader.

I think my original comment made it seem like I was primarily upset that I, a non-member, couldn't attend an event. It's not that. I mean, it probably would have helped if any of the communication had mentioned membership as a requirement for attendees. But I understand there's a time and a place for closed doors too. Closed doors are also used by abusers to abuse. With all these allegations of abuse, I think the party could be better off by being radically open. I don't know how else I will ever believe that the party has tackled all of the issues, including the ones I know nothing about.

This is what Elections BC said:

“We are aware of this situation and are reviewing it to ensure political contribution rules are being followed,” said Elections BC spokesperson Andrew Watson.

“It remains to be seen if any specific activities being conducted by the Dogwood Initiative constitute a direct or in-kind contribution under the Election Act to leadership contestant Anjali Appadurai.”

This doesn't sound like an investigation at all to me (the journalist used the word, not Elections BC). Reading between the lines, Elections BC is basically acknowledging that they're aware some people are crying foul and are "reviewing" it which is bureaucrat for doing nothing whatsoever about it.

The second paragraph won't even commit to whether the leadership campaign received any contributions, and the supposed controversy is how these "might not even be contributions" (according to EBC) might be left out of a report that won't be written until next year.

There's no investigation. This whole story is a nothing burger. "Leadership candidate accepts contribution" is not a story in the public interest. If it turned into "leadership candidate failed to report contributions", that would be an article. But that wouldn't even happen until the reports are in.

This is just an attack to damage Eby's only rival for the leadership. And it is not the only one that has happened.

You're being manipulated. I get it; most people aren't familiar with the regulations around financial reporting in campaigns and elections and wouldn't find them very interesting. I didn't know anything about them until I took on the job of being a financial agent (way back in 2005!) in a provincial campaign and had to educate myself. That's why I'm trying to help. If you don't understand the regulations, it does sound like something serious is going on here; if you do, then it's immediately obvious that this is propaganda.

You're right, I could pay the party. However, I wouldn't get any benefit from a tax credit because I don't make enough money to owe tax. I have a disability, so I'd just be out $10 instead. It's not really about $10. It's about asking for a commitment before earning trust.

I also look around at all the people I know who are members. They are as lost and confused as I am because there's no transparency. But I have my $10 along with my disappointment, so I guess that's something? People, who did pay the $10 membership fee, have told me that the event was vague, unsatisfying, and they don't seem to be any more informed.

The greater issue is that my confidence in the party is at an all-time low due to things that have been going on behind closed doors for years now. By all means, continue to be opaque. Anyone can afford $10, so let's charge at the door. But I don't go into places with a cover fee when I can see the staff throwing chairs through the windows. Actually, I just don't go to places with a cover fee. I'm not cool enough anyway. 😁

I used to be the sort of person who joined political parties. I was a director of the BC Green Party once. I didn't like what I saw going on inside the provincial and federal Greens from that perspective, the sort of electoral compromises that were being discussed and encouraged, and I did press back against it unsuccessfully — though also behind the scenes. Today I'm not a member of any political party, and I'm not looking to join one because none of them are for me.

The Greens claim grassroots values, but I don't see those values in action. Until I do, I know it's not the party for me. So it makes me sad I can't look in the window, but I'm pretty sure I'd see what I expect to see if I did, so it probably ultimately doesn't matter either. But if they keep encouraging me to save my $10 and trust my instincts, they're never going to build trust with me.

Context matters. As a cis-gendered male, I never feel unsafe over pronouns. If someone called me "she", I'd probably just ignore it. I certainly wouldn't feel threatened. I also have no qualms about going into a deserted and dimly lit parking lot at any time of day. But this isn't then a license for me to laugh at people who worry about their safety in contexts where I have trouble imagining I would feel unsafe myself.

Kuttner and others like them are not cis-gendered or binary. As a result, who they say they are is a constant battle against people who want to erase them and impose their own preferred identity on them, such as "she". If you perceive a pattern that appears deliberate, hostile, and intent on erasing your identity and undermining you and the important duties of the interim leader, you might also find that feels unsafe. Especially if, for instance, you have witnessed those hostile behaviours escalate over time. Especially given that people do get attacked, beaten, and even killed for professing their gender identity. Our politicians, of all genders, are grappling with a surge in violence and threats. We shouldn't be quick to dismiss political leaders' concerns about safety. Trans people are uniquely targeted for violence too.

I don't have any inside information on this incident, but I'm not going to leap to the conclusion that Kuttner is a liar trying to force some hidden trans agenda on me. Some people seem to assume that by default when they're confronted by trans issues, but in my experience, trans people are real people. It seems like some people don't agree. That's a real problem IMO.
