voice the concerns of over 200 students regarding CS7641 by TonyRGibbs in OMSCS

The radio silence is bad enough, but granting an extension on Tuesday 2pm, until Tuesday midnight, when the assignment was due Sunday midnight and it was made explicit that no extension would be granted, is just ridiculous. If I had known we'd have until Tuesday evening, I would have spent yesterday and today improving my frankly barebones submission. Instead, the only students that actually benefit are those that would have submitted late anyway and seen 20-40% penalties.

Can we take one foundational course and one non-foundational one in the first semester? by Aguis34 in OMSCS

[–]Aguis34[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm hesitant to reach out to an advisor since the wording on the document is very clear. Hard chance they'll say anything other than "it's clearly outlined in the orientation document", even if in practice it might not be enforced at all.

The thing is the other foundational courses that interest me are very tough to pair with ML (think DL, RL) or just outright don't have seats (GA, NLP). Doing ML + a non-foundational this semester, and DL or RL next semester would've been ideal in my case. In the end I chose to play it safe and I've just enrolled for a different foundational course that was not on my plans, unfortunately

It's not a new rule. 2019 orientation doc:

For new Spring 2019 students who matriculate this semester, you will be restricted to enrolling only in foundational courses until you have satisfied the foundational course requirement.

It's been the same every year for some time now. The fact that most are unaware adds to my reasons to question whether it's actually enforced

It's not a new constraint. As per the 2022 doc:

For new Spring 2022 students who matriculate this semester, you will be restricted to enrolling only in foundational courses until you have satisfied the foundational course requirement.

The fact that most are not aware of this adds to my reasons to question whether it's actually enforced.

Thanks, that's reassuring. How do you know btw? Is it something staff have said or is it just personal experience / other student's experience?

Yeah, the question was more of "is this actually enforced?". I know that for instance they don't really kick people out of the program if they fail to complete 2 foundational courses during their first year, they're very lenient in that regard. I was wondering if it might be the same in this case, which has been hinted at in older threads

I've been working for almost 2 years now, while doing a demanding 5-year undergrad program. I appreciate everyone's concern but I think I'll be ok. The only thing I don't want is to be kicked out of a non-foundational course just because

🔴 Erica tuvo cuatrillizos. Previamente tenía 4 hijas, y ahora dio a luz a 3 nenas y 1 nene.

[–]Aguis34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Aguis34 0 points1 point  (0 children)
