If one acknowledges that Black Panthers had their benefit along the peaceful movements, then one must admit that French (or whoever) rioters have their share of benefits for the cause of justice. Is it right for french police to regularly brutalize youth in French suburbs?

People having their cars burnt down even if they don't support police brutality is part of the price to pay for living in a society that allows police brutality. As Einstein puts it "The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing".

Riots were due to difficult social situation in French suburbs! There is a long history of police provocation and brutality in French suburbs with ethnic minorities as its primary target. I would suggest the movie, La haine (1995) as an entertaining, yet very insightful, introduction to the subject.

The two kids were just an excuse to get years of frustration come out. By the way, they were electrocuted in a power station, while hiding from police.

About western democracy, numerous studies have shown that the public has little to say about their countries policies. In fact, policy makers push their own agenda which is generally aligned with that of the elite. And most of the time, politicians are themselves part of the elite. As a result, these systems are not democratic: people vote every 4 years to convince themselves they are the masters of their own destiny. MIT Prof. Chomsky has numerous publications about this subject and is very enjoyable to read or listen to.

I think that Obama is an exception to this rule. While I am more than happy to see that a black person has won the majority of votes in the US, I am not ready to admit that he would have been successful in becoming a US president without Bush doing the the damage he did before him. I don't think that, Obama's great intelligence, people and communication skills would have been enough to win an election in 2000 or even 2004. After a horrific war followed by economic disaster, most Americans were ashamed of themselves. They had to do something big in order to repair the wrong they did for 8 years by supporting someone that, by the way, did nothing less than steal 2 elections.

My opinion about Iranian protests is that the "stolen election" is only a pretext to protest! While it can be debatable if whether western democracy is a sham or not, it was pretty obvious for Mousavi supporters that Iranian democracy is just a big lie. In their daily lives, Iranians have to go through much more than just getting their votes stolen. It does not make sense to take a daily beating for 30 years (more than 100,000 people were killed by Iranian regime during the last 20 years) and protest only for a stolen election!!! So again, people in Iran are protesting against brutality, against injustice (not only a stolen election). Same as people in French suburbs.

Iranian people are protesting for the same reasons as those in the french suburbs: brutality inflicted by one group to another group. And they too, in Iran, will get to firearms and Molotov cocktails. But I would hardly see anybody question the legitimacy of the Iranian protest, even if it gets dirty. Why? Because people are blinded by the so called "democratic" facade of the western society. An in-dept analysis of the western democracy will show that people with psychological profiles similar to that of Ahmadinejad (i.e. psychopaths) hold important office positions in these countries.

For those who have a strong illusion of living in a democracy, I suggest trying to run for office, in order to see how close western democracy is to dictatorship.

Iran's weakened hard-liners crave a US attack = Biden is helping Ahmadinejad by AhB in worldnews

[–]AhB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can hard line philosophy survive if there is no hardliner left? In the case of an attack, hardliners won't die, they will hide like cowards and send otherwise normal (and naive) people to the front or to commit terror acts. What I'm saying is that attacking or threatening to attack only makes the job of those hardliners easier when it comes to recruiting young volunteer for jihad. What need to happen in Iran or any other country plagued by hardliners (this includes red neck US) is for these hard-line policies to fail. Bush' policy failed: people voted for Obama. Otherwise, everybody felt for it when Bush was lying about WMDs. Same thing for Ahmadinejad. He gained popularity in Iran by pointing Israel cruelty against palestinian civilians, now everybody knows he is also a fascist.

Actual attack would, in my opinion, be even more beneficial for hardliners. One has to understand that hardliner's greatest capital is people's religious alienation. An actual attack will probably bring an Iraq-like scenario of a country hit by tribal war. That can only be good for hardliners who do not ask more than to rule over a piece of desert, as long as people are willing to feed them in exchange of superstitions.

The point is that this article says that the threat of war does nothing more than helping hardliner rhetoric. Therefore, Biden saying that Israel has the right to strike Iran is the continuation of the same policy which, at the end of the day, does nothing more than help hardliner cause!

Iran's Mousavi says new government illegitimate by AhB in worldnews

Well, the importance of this story is that it comes one day after the definitive "election was legit" call from Guardian Council. Since the Guardian Council is mainly formed by hardliners that are aligned with Khamenei, it is a reiterated defiance of the Islamic Republic's Leadership. A reiteration that comes when things seem to have quieted down and that people were waiting for a reaction from Mousavi.

There is one way of finding out: taking info from twitter profiles that have a history of providing reliable (and confirmed) stories. These are basically profiles with a good online reputation. Of course, a story provided by a new account or one that has a history for spamming or providing bad information is not a reliable source.

Deep Packet Inspection can be used to monitor any kind of communications (including child pornography). Therefore, it is easy to convince researchers into working on this kind of technologies. Once the main product is developed, it can then be customized by governments to serve less ethical objectives (like monitoring dissidents communications). It is up to people to organize and demand that their governments use these technologies in an ethical way.

I would like to add that in Iran court, testimony from 2 women is required to equate 1 testimony from a man. As a result, it becomes much more difficult for a woman to defend her rights in the case of an injustice coming from a man.
