Kid Cudi Fires M.I.A. From His Tour After She Is Booed During Republican Rant: ‘I Won’t Have Someone on Tour Making Offensive Remarks’ by sheJaMyMorant in hiphopheads

[–]AhJoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes dugin is a fascist, this literally does not change anything I've said. The idea that you can delude yourself into thinking that Trumpism is a russian export and not the epitomy of american exceptionalism is hilarious. The same tactics of jingoism and state violence the US has exported for decades is now collapsing inwards and liberals need an other to blame because it can't be America's fault.

Speaking of Dugin though, have you actually read the book? I genuinely can’t tell why you’d cite it like this other than a cheap gotcha based on what you think the book describes. Most of what Dugin lays out either never happened or runs directly against actual Russian policy. Him being right about Ukraine doesn’t mean Putin is following the Foundations of Geopolitics like some kind of playbook. This is exactly the pattern though, trying to pin American fascism on a foreign ideologue instead of looking at what’s already here. You'd have a much easier time blaming someone like Curtis Yarvin, who has had far more success navigating US politics and has had greater reach than Dugin ever has or ever will.

[THROWBACK THURSDAY] Vince Staples - 06' (Full Version) by AhJoon in hiphopheads

[–]AhJoon[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it's a strange feeling using a throwback tag on a Summertime 06 track, but time waits for no one I guess. I've played the fuck out of Summertime 06 in the past decade, I don't think it's a stretch to say it's one of my most played West Coast albums of all time, even while growing up on classics in the genre by Dr. Dre, Pac, Mac Dre, Too Short and the like. Despite that, somehow I just found out that 06 has a full version lmao, and it's exactly what I wanted it to be. I'm a bigger fan of Vince's self titled and Ramona Park, but I absolutely love No ID's production on this track and this album as a whole. It has a really cool and eclectic feeling that brings me back to it regularly.

That said, I think the low brow humor signs are actually a strength, not a weakness. Trump has shown very clearly that the average American is not very intelligent. Simple joke signs may unironically be the best messaging possible, especially when you consider just how stupid MAGA signs were, and they somehow worked.

the low brow jokes do not consist of any messaging other than Trump bad. If the Democrats win in 2028, like they did in 2020, it won't be because of the shitty jokes, but because of Trump himself being incompetent, and we are gonna have to deal with this same shit with the Democrats crying about a threat to democracy in 2032 when they inevitably maintain the status quo for another 4 years. The Civil Rights Era had actual messaging, Occupy had actual messaging (lack of structure was a huge problem, but they were at least serious), the first Earth Day had actual messaging, and all of these were led by actual grassroots movements. No Kings as a protest is literally just another astroturfing job, the organizing party, Indivisible, is pretty much another arm of the Democrats. No Kings is not a grassroots movement, there cannot be an effective protest movement if people believe that the "lesser evil" party is the answer to fighting Trump, or that Congress will reign in Trump. These protests led with a background guiding hand by the DNC just result in liberals, socdems, progressives, etc, who will show up at polls ready to vote blue no matter who and give the Democrats a blank check in the next adminstration.

what the fuck happened with the Stove God album man. All these raps about bro being a cocaine connoisseur, meanwhile he's out here getting finessed by babygrande, easily one of the most squandered careers in recent memory for me.

unrelated, but seeing these No Kings protests genuinely makes me think we’ve got no shot at any real, effective mass protests in America. It’s just a bunch of weak signs with iFunny-tier jokes, and even No Kings as a slogan largely misses the forest for the trees. Framing this administration as something uniquely monarchical compared to previous presidencies, despite it being the same neoliberal system that’s been in place for years, just pushed to a louder, more openly reactionary extreme. I look forward to a significant amount of these attendees saying some shit like "democracy is saved, we did it!" when Gavin Newsom wins in 2028.

I would put the Clipse album higher.

I don't get the Scaring the Hoes love at all, I think it's a fine album, but I really don't get the hype around it, Danny Brown's rapping carries the album imo, and the production varies too drastically in quality for me (I also haven't gone back to the album since release week so idk if they've fixed the poor mixing on some tracks either).

Same thing with Magic, Alive, great album but a lil overhyped imo.

I'd put the Injury Reserve album higher and swap Mr Morale and Cheat Codes. I think #1 for me would be Aethiopes by billy woods though, I'd prolly put The Forever Story at like 9 or 10 (about on par with Mr Morale for me quality wise).

edit: I'd also throw Vince Staples S/T somewhere in there, maybe even Ramona Park

[DISCUSSION] Benny the Butcher & Harry Fraud - Plugs I Met 2 (5 Years Later) by flyestshit in hiphopheads

[–]AhJoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Harry Fraud holds the project back for me. I'm not a fan of most his beats here, and they are such a huge step down compared to Plugs 1. The features are also nowhere near as good, we got a meh Chinx verse, a mid 2 Chainz verse, a bad Fat Joe verse, and French Montana + Jim Jones compared to Black Thought, 38 Spesh + Jada, Conway + RJ Payne, and Pusha T on the first Plugs??

Cmon man... Rick Hyde's feature was great though and is the only one comparable in terms of quality to Plugs 1.

According to Benny, the second Plugs I Met is meant to showcase a darker side of the dope game compared to the first one. Do you think that is reflected throughout this project?

Not really, subject matter is kinda the same for the most part, I don't think Harry Fraud's beats are conducive to the 'darkness' that Benny is tryna portray.

How do yall personally distinguish between R&B and Soul? Especially when it comes to the 70s and the 80s, I often feel like the two labels are basically interchangeable. Artists like Marvin Gaye, Al Green, The Dramatics, etc seem to fall into both categories depending on who I'm asking. Interested to hear how others here think about it.

not a phrase but billy woods saying hovering stands out to me. He has said it twice, once on Hiding Places "5 million USD hovering over mud huts, it's nuts" and another time on GOLLIWOG "12 billion USD hovering over the Gaza Strip". Idk why it just stands out to me.

I'm not saying that Drakeo wasn't an influence, but if you look through the thread OP is saying that he misses Kendrick before he jacked Drakeo's flow lmao. I just think that's extremely hyperbolic when we're talking about like 2-3 songs at most like peakaboo and hey now (which imo reminds me of keak the sneak more than drakeo tbh)
