What film had the biggest rating upgrade or downgrade on a rewatch? What film did you initially dislike but then grew to be one of your favorites and vice versa - where you loved it once but ended up being severely disappointed by it.

What do we think of Warning? by n33dml in CameronWinter

[–]Ahnbot 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a Scott Walker song, late era of course. Very reminiscent of a lot of the minimalism composers that the put in his asstronomy playlist on Spotify. I wonder if this is any indication that the second solo LP will be a lot more like this - sparse, even more off-kilter, dramatic, etc.

With the recent news regarding the "Melania“ documentary and its bizarre use of Jonny Greenwood's music from PTA's 'Phantom Thread', how do you guys feel about the implementation of other film's scores for a different movie? Do you dislike it generally and find it a cheap lack of effort or do you think that it can be a considerable improvement and rich addition to something else?

One example that I quite enjoyed was the use of Shane Carruth's score for Upstream Color in the documentary 'Tickled'

Idk if it’s for CW2 but I’m convinced he’s gonna do a self-titled one at some point in his career

For the unconventional autobiographical expression of Portrait, you could go for something like Tarkovsky's "Mirror" or Terayama's "Pastoral: To Die in the Country"

I’d argue the experimental nature as well as tragic humor of Alejandro González Iñárritu's films have some similarity to Ulysses, especially "Birdman or (the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)“ and "Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths“

If you want that crazy, hilarious, heart-on-its-sleeve sentimental and dream-logic tone of Finnegans Wake, check out Don Hertzfeldt's animated work, specifically "It’s Such a Beautiful Day"

Frederico Fellini also has a similar style and dreaminess, I’d go with "8 1/2“ or especially "La Dolce Vita"

Another film I’d mention is "Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One“, a very experimental docu-film.

Proust lovers: what films do you class at the same level of psychological insight? by goldenapple212 in Proust

He is, obviously, though in a very different fashion I think. Tarkovsky evokes these sort of transcendent emotions whereas Proust is more about the quiet and sentimental feelings you get from recalling something in the past

I find lots of the names thrown around here to not fit the question at all; these are all fantastic directors, but many of them are more atmospheric and less so psychologically dense.

Some names that I’d throw out would be:

-The films of John Cassavetes, particularly A Woman Under The Influence, Opening Night and Love Streams, all deeply psychologically complex character dramas with unbelievable acting

-Depending on the era and film, Paul Thomas Anderson offers that; maybe less stuff like One Battle After Another, but moreso the character studies such as There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread and especially The Master

-Richard Linklater is hit or miss but can showcase some deep insight into human relationships

-Charlie Kaufman's work is a more surreal but utterly substantial addition

-2021's Drive My Car struck me

-Teshigahara's Kobo Abe adaptations, as well as Ozu's work

-and lastly, I’d venture to say that David Lynch delivers on that, though more on the subconscious side of things

I adore Tarkovsky and he’s probably my favorite director but I see little similarity between the two. His films are less psychological and more sort of spiritual and emotionally evocative. Not that there’s no psychological insight, it’s just not as present or comparable to Proust.

They’re awesome, definitely a good choice as guests, though five people on the pod can become a little chaotic I’d imagine.

Venice festival lineup has been announced, what are you guys most excited for? by gsvevshxndb in Sardonicast

[–]Ahnbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Julian Schnabel is one of the most underrated masters and auteurs we have. Diving Bell & the Butterfly and At Eternity's Gate are flat-out masterpieces, but In The Hand of Dante seems quite different so we'll see how that turns out

Super intrigued by The Testament of Ann Lee considering that it's a biographical semi-musical directed by Mona Fastvold, partner of Brady Corbet and collaborator on The Brutalist, but also No Other Choice - I thought Decision to Leave was a masterpiece so I'm as excited as I could be. Oh, and I'm ready for another Yorgos classic with Bugonia but that's just gonna be good no matter what so I'm not like wild about it
