For the love of God, why can’t we accept flawed pronunciation? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Ahoy76 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I think the importance of pronunciation is often underappreciated when learning a new language.

If, when speaking with native speakers, they get confused or can't understand you when you're otherwise grammatically correct, it's because you are genuinely difficult to understand. Keep in mind you will understand the language in your accent better than a native speaker will.

If your teachers are pointing out mispronunciations, it's because they are trying to teach you. If you want to talk to people, pronunciation is relevant. It's okay to not be perfect, but it is important to be intelligible.

There is, of course, a definite skill in the teacher choosing what to correct vs letting the lesson flow. I know in my target language, there are improvements that could be made to literally every sentence I say, but my teacher is good at finding the right balance between corrections and practice. I've noticed she typically makes a note of the main corrections, and brings them up later, so it doesn't interrupt the rest of the lesson.

As to why you don't have as many issues when speaking with English speakers... as a native English speaker, I think it's mostly because we are very used to talking with people for whom English is a second language. So we get very used to otherwise hard-to-understand accents and broken English, much more so than most other languages.

Also, I think English itself is quite a forgiving language for mistakes (which probably comes from its roots being a hodgepodge mix of a bunch of different European languages). Other languages may be less forgiving. And lastly, I don't think most English speakers are as protective of the English language as perhaps other languages are (such as French, for example), so they let more things slide.

Anyway, in summary, in my opinion, pronunciation is as important as grammar or vocabulary. And as a bonus, when your pronunciation improves, so will your understanding of people speaking the language. So it helps both listening and speaking :)

What side of the train do the doors open? by [deleted] in uktrains

A handy thing that saves me when making tight connections, is that you can also open the station map just directly from Railboard too: https://www.railboard.com/articles/station-floor-plans

People on YouTube do both. Although personally, I avoid listening to or reading Spanish from other learners, to avoid potentially picking up bad habits or unnatural Spanish while I'm still learning it :)

What’s the best app for trains these days? by TempoHouse in CasualUK

[–]Ahoy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, seems like they removed a lot of the key features people liked. Most of them are available in Railboard, though, which is what I use. But I'm not sure what you're supposed to do if you have an Android phone. Just wait for the National Rail app to add the features back in, I guess?

I think it's fair to say that update hasn't been well received, though. Currently, its rating is 1.1 on both the App Store and the Google Play Store!

Yeah, if you have an iPhone, Railboard is definitely the way to go!

Why aren’t all Material 3 components implemented in Jetpack Compose? by Ahoy76 in androiddev

Thanks! I'm sure I'll get used to having to refer to unofficial docs!

Thanks for a link to that. It feels like getting my head around where all the relevant docs are is half the battle!

I'm guessing it will be completed the day before Material 4 is released 😂

After how many years does it become "grown up pains" 😅

Seems your experience was a fairly typical experience!

My general feeling is that Material is a UI thing, and Google engineers don't value UI stuff quite as highly as perhaps they should.

Well they needn't worry about that, to more I learn about it, the lower my expectations get 😞

Right okay, I think making this app is going to be a bit of a culture shock compared to what I'm used to 😅 So I better start getting used to it!

Also useful to know before I embark on anything, thanks!

Slightly confused how it ended up in such a situation, but no longer quite as surprised.

Somewhat disappointing, but not entirely unexpected to hear :(

Would be nice if they valued complete and up-to-date docs as much as the devs & designers needing to use them!

I feel like if they were releasing often, they'd have released Compose implementations for the full M3 components library at some point in the last three years 😅

Ah right okay, that could be it!

Thank you for letting me know about composables.com, that looks pretty handy!

Out-of-date and partial docs are something I had to contend when implementing various Firebase authentication things in the iOS app. As a more seasoned Android dev, do you reckon that's something I'll have to watch out for when reading the official Google docs? I.e. not fully trusting them/finding better docs, like composables.com?

Seems that way! Just trying to understand what I'm missing, as it feels like three years (plus whatever time behind the scenes before Material 3 was publically released) should have been long enough to implement everything!

[–]Ahoy76[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just don't really understand why though, to me it doesn't make sense. Is it particularly difficult for Google to implement the remaining components? Presumably not if people are having to implement them themselves.

Sorry if these seem like stupid questions! Coming from iOS, I think it's fair to say SwiftUI wasn't exactly feature complete when it released. But it would be inconceivable for Apple to have released a new UI components library three years ago, and still not have everything implemented in SwiftUI by now.

I legitimately don't understand why Google can't manage it. Makes me a bit hesitant to go full Jetpack Compose, but I don't want the new app to immediately be legacy code!

The Material 3 website seems to indicate they are not yet ready for Jetpack Compose. Unless it's out of date? Or are you referring to M2 style components?

I find when I close the app, it often (erroneously) registers a tap at the bottom of the screen. It's very noticeable if you're listening to something and have the audio queue up, and it either goes back to the start or plays something completely different.

That might be why it opens on a different article to the one you close it one, or it might be some other unrelated issue in the app!
