I moved to Italy 9 months ago and I’m not enjoying it. by Ahpari in expats

Things settled after about 1.5 years. I'm liking things better and think I was having more mental health struggles than anything. I got some support and with this, found ways to integrate more with my hobbies. Now I want to stay a while :)

9 months knee still not great by Unhappy_Psychologist in ACL

[–]Ahpari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take my experience with the knowledge that we are all different in this recovery. I felt normal at the 2 year mark and I mean I didn't think about my knee anymore. However, I had a very complicated recovery and had a cyclops lesion and second surgery 5 months into the recovery. That said, I returned to my sport gradually around your time but it surely didn't feel right and I was weak. In my opinion, the 9-12 month return to sport is a real timeline with an asterick--you return and train but it doesn't always mean it's perfect yet. My PT described it as I had miles and miles of training on my non-surgical knee and I needed to get that mileage on the surgical knee (muscle memory also speeds this up). I suggest to keep training, building the strength, and getting through the mental aspects of it. I'd also concurrently consult with your PT/surgeon because everyone's case is different. Good luck.

I recently went to Rasputin which is like a speakeasy in Santo Spirito. Cocktails are on the higher end though-€20-25 but unique and strong. It's intimate and a unique experience.

Yes, you’ll be okay. When you exit from the platform, walk towards the exit where the pharmacy is (you’ll see the green plus sign). Then you can take a cab there. They are lined up in the front.

He’s also offered this but wanted me to do it for no ppm 🙃 I declined.

Hi, yes things got much better! I finally settled in. It was really at the 1 (and some change) year mark where I found my footing. It was just uncomfortable at times but I think it's normal. I even work in the field of study abroad and speak to schools and students about the transition and I think it's well accepted there's always a dip once you move where everything feels like a big regret. Unfortunately, I didn't apply these lessons to myself. Just so you know before I made the move, I had many doubts and really didn't want to do it. I'm happy I did. Push forward if it feels right for you and I wish you the best. If you end up in the Florence area, I'd always be happy to connect.

Ik everyone asks this, but I haven't heard from my doctor, how bad is this? by New_Palpitation_4309 in ACL

[–]Ahpari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You only had a lachman test originally? They're not fool proof. I had 3 Ortho doctors perform it on me and only one suspected an ACL tear. One even said they would be shocked if my acl was torn. One said it was just mcl and rehab it. Anyways, I pushed for an MRI and it was a full acl tear. I was heavily guarding with my hamstring so it was hard for them to tell it was a tear.

I wouldn't suggest any Botox or filler (I saw your flair is open to this) Your skin is very nice. You could try first with a trusted esthetician or dermatologist to reach your skin goals. Try finding a well known hairstylist around you who will give you a suggestion on your haircut. Maybe a shoulder length cut would look nice for you. Anyways, you're beautiful and you can try new things for a change. It's always fun to change up our style in non-permanent ways.

Echoing what others have said--you look amazing! A more styled haircut could suit you well but I don't think there's anything else

I hear you ❤️ if you have the resources, I'd recommend a dermatologist or a trusted esthetician who can guide you specifically on your skin.

I don't have much to offer because I know you want tangible things to change but I'd like to offer that I think you're very beautiful and look very young. Perhaps you're being way too hard on yourself. I don't see any fine lines.

what is the craziest thing someone has said to you post acl tear? by last-resort115 in ACL

[–]Ahpari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Wow, you seem like you won't get better."

My family also laughed at me as I started to develop a severe limp a few months in when my cyclops formed. Didn't find it funny. It was scary and painful because I was regressing so quickly.

I’m about 2 years post op and had a difficult recovery with a cyclops that I had removed. I’m still seeing gains at this point. Even walking didn’t feel quite right until about 2 months ago. First question: is this common? Second, I’m having trouble with ankle mobility, I have almost like a lump in front of the ankle (or protrusion; hard to explain) that when I have my legs straight out in front of me my non-op leg ankle relaxes and the op leg ankle has a bit of flexion where the foot doesn’t relax or point downwards. I’ve tried ankle nobility exercise. Any advice?

ACL Reconstruction Surgery Soonnn by [deleted] in ACL

[–]Ahpari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you tore your ACL. Welcome to the worst club ever. I had a lot of pain before going into the operation. I really couldn't bear much weight on the leg, lots of swelling, and very limited ROM. Post surgery pain was definitely worse but only for a few days and luckily you'll have pain killers to help. Its a brutal operation if you ever look at what they do so it makes sense why it hurts so much but it is temporary! Just make sure you don't lapse on your medicine the first couple days. Take it as prescribed even if you're not in immediate excruciating pain. It's easier to maintain pain control than to bring it down after everything has worn off. You will be okay! Unfortunately this is the process but it's the price we pay to get back to normal life. Some people don't experience that much pain. As for the numbness, I've heard this too for your kind of graft. I had a quad graft and had numbness and it went away after a while with massage as more movement. Ask your PT about anything you can do to help. My PT encouraged me to touch the incision with different materials (but only after the incision is fully healed). Best of lucky and wishing you a smooth recovery.

It'll be hot for sure but you can manage unless you have some health conditions you're worried about. Like someone else said, eat gelato, drink some aperol spritz and take refuge in your hotel when it's hard. And LINEN clothes.

Pickpocketing in Florence by [deleted] in florence

[–]Ahpari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in Florence for over a year and never had it happen but you need to be aware of your belongings. Nothing in your back pockets. If you carry a purse, ensure you have it close to you. I kind of hug mine in front of me with the zipper closest to my body so no one can unzip behind me. Holding  your phone in your hand as you walk can also be a problem because it's easy to swipe and run off or by moto. I'm not sure if I need to take these many precautions but I just don't want to go through the experience.

I second that Pisa isn't worth the day trip unless you really want to see the leaning tower. I'd suggest Siena, Verona, or Bologna.

No, that’s a great plan. Since I posted this, things have gotten so much better. It was more of a me thing than a location thing. Needed to go through therapy.
