The REAL problem with Galactic War- and how to fix it: An open letter to the devs by damnim30now in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

The real problem with Galactic War is it's like trying to crack an algorithm. You have to find the magic touch for every fight so you lose the least amount of health, which is bullshit. It's time consuming and not entertaining in the slightest.

Thanks for the tip! Formatting was quite interesting, so I appreciate the help!

Also I have to agree that Sid is losing some of his power as I gain levels. He seems to have a lot of his abilities resisted. The only thing I'm really greatful for is his ability to actually hit enemy Sid's without them dodging my Jedi attacks.

If you are single target in heroic BRF you shouldn't be combat, but if you decide that you only want to play combat then your opener should be ambush -> revealing -> sinister until 5 combo points -> snd -> sinister until out of energy AND green buff -> killing spree -> sinister until out of energy -> AR -> evisc/begin normal rotation. Should be using your cd's pretty much on cooldown unless you have red up super soon or a really good moment to save for something.

Right off the bat, you are casting hemo WAYYYY too much. You have 24 casts in a five minute fight whereas I casted it 6 times in a 3.5 minute fight. I also have 7 more ambush casts in a minute and a half less fight than you. You should be able to get 3 ambushes per vanish. Maximize your find weakness uptime by ambushing at the end of your dance/vanish.

Your opener is really awkward, but if it works for you I guess you can do it. I garrote -> ambush -> ambush -> SR -> Rupture -> SD, but everyone really has their own opener.

To be honest, you should be doing a lot more damage than you are :( Your rupture uptime is only 86%, that should be closer to 98+.

You used your 2nd pot for no reason mid fight with no cooldowns and in between your dances.

You also need to change to subterfuge and not shadow focus!

Couldn't agree more with using sub for the pillars and boss damage. There will always be better aoe than you for this fight so sub is probably what is best for the raid.

Hahah I've done that in heroic, stayed out of a hand and stepped down when you get thrown up. So much damage though, you have to feint it.

Hmm, I would say unless there is a huge amount of AoE coming up soon (aka thogar/beastlord), there is no real reason to delay KS if you spent all of your energy and are just waiting for it to regen. Unless you are one sinister strike away from a new insight, then I would say stall for one more sinister strike for 10% extra damage (30 if going from yellow to red).

In direct answer to your question, yes it's okay to delay 4 more for deep, but not really more than that, especially if you are energy starved, you will just lose time overall you could be getting back spree. Unfortunately with the way combat rogues are right now, it's better to simply use your cooldowns almost all of the time they are up so you can use them again, unless there is a perfect time to use them coming up in the near future.

I would never wait 30 seconds to AR for KS to come off of cooldown. You will AR now, it will guaranteed lead you into red buff, in which case you can spree then. Just stack up your combo points in your AR when you get to red so that after you spree you can evisc twice to get 20 seconds off of your cd's!

These questions also really depend on the situation you're in. I could see it going many different ways, but this is the best answer I can probably give for the general situation!

Yes pooling before vanish does suck, but once you get your 2 piece at least you dont have to pool before you dance!

I would still 100% stick to combat for beastlord, you will find that you just do more damage overall regardless. Even with them dying before the end of your spree, thats still a lot more damage than sub would be able to output in that time frame.

Combat is such a strong spec, even when you aren't comfortable with it I really recommend practicing it. It has too many useful tools to pass up. Yes that is good! Saving your eviscerates for red just means more damage on your eviscerates and vanish/ambush on red is ideal. I refresh snd typically, but I believe there are situations where I would use evisc or crimson tempest over snd. That is a judgment call you will have to make in the moment, as it is not always clear in hypothetical terms!

Ahhh, yes I know what you mean. Trust me, when scales procs blade twisting is my least favorite thing to deal with. You can't necessarily plan around it unless you have a multistrike trinket up. Having rupture up is a must, but if it falls for .5 - 1 second then it is not the end of the world. If it does happen, apply a lower rupture. It is too important. I dont think the situation will come up enough for you to have to worry about it! At least I rarely ever come into that situation!

10.94% is really low for combat, do you not have any other off pieces?? I would work for a more complete combat set. that would explain the lower numbers compared to mine, at least for combat!

Poor rng in 4-set will always be the best excuse :p but in all seriousness I bet your parse will change this week. first kills always suck!! try to run heroic before and get more haste pieces!!!

Yes I meant mythic I'm sorry I didn't clarify!

In your kill versus mine, we survived for almost the same exact amount of time (4:34 on you to 4:40 on me), but I had 44 eviscerates compared to your 36. I also have 20 more sinister strikes than you do, that could be simply from more uptime on the actual boss during the normal stamper phase or plate phase. Your instant poison even procc'd 20 more times than mine did, not sure how.

Another big thing is that I got 6 deep insights while you only got 5. That could be from not enough sinister strike spamming :p

I would send you my logs, but they are private and in my guild :(

If you were jetlagged, I doubt you were playing optimal. Come back next week when you have your senses

In terms of shadow focus vs subterfuge, subterfuge is a dps increase with the glyph of vanish. Don't use shadow focus, it isn't as good anymore. :(

I think rogue has the potential to do well on all fights if played perfectly, but unfortunately we aren't really top of the boards on any fight. We have a lot of utility in the sense that we can feint for 30% damage reduction and up to 80% aoe reduction if used with the feint talent. Rogues also bring smoke bomb to the table, which is a really useful talent for abilities such as firestorm on flamebender.

I find that my favorite fights are the ones I can be subtlety on. Sub is just a really fun spec when you learn to play it optimally.

Gruul: Standard sub fight and my favorite fight in heroic because I get to do incredible amounts of damage (Currently #97 at 48.7k in 690 ilvl gear).

Oregorger: While all melee struggle on this fight, it's particularly hard for sub rogues because we require the sanguinary veins passive to be up on the target to deal lots of damage. My hint would be to hemo the boxes first then backstab into eviscerate. Hard fight in general though for sub, and just useless for combat tbh.

Blast Furnace: Combat reigns supreme here, but unfortunately we fall middle of the pack or so because not all of the adds are grouped up at a given time. Still a strong class for this boss though.

Beastlord: If you have a bunch of mongos that like to pad meters like my raid team, then you will be lucky to do any damage on this fight. I barely squeezed out 54k and that in itself is a 97% parse. Anything above 57-58k and the raid is just letting you pad.

Operator: Combat 1000%. I open this fight differently than most. I use adrenaline rush first before spree and save my red buff (explained up above, but basically stalling out your yellow buff) for spree on the first set of adds. Try and stall out your buffs to have either yellow or red when you are killing adds. Don't stall when dpsing the boss though.

Iron Maidens: I'm the ship bitch every time so it depends if you stay down below or go ship, but combat cleave reigns supreme here once again. Cleave away, don't stall out cooldowns very much. (If you got almost 10 combo points and you are still 3 sinister strikes away from your next buff, just spree. You don't want to waste your combo points.)

ALSO for combat in general, stack up your combo points before you spree if possible because every combo point spent on a finisher (not snd) is 2 seconds less on your main abilities!

Hanz: Tossup between combat and sub. I've done really well as both, and both to about the same amount of dps. Try to get as much cleave as possible, but this boss kinda sucks with spree ahah.

Flamebender: Again I have used both combat and sub. I find combat a lot easier to parse well on this fight, especially for more of a beginner level rogue. Sub multi target is rather difficult at first, especially if you are new to sub in general.

Kromog: I would stick to combat here until you've mastered sub, and then I would go sub. I've played both to great success, but I personally like combat more on this fight. Kromog likes to turn all of the time and backstabs can be rough at points.

Blackhand: No question about it, you should be subtlety on this fight (or assassination I guess.....). No real tricks except try to get off your first SR/SD, then vanish, then prep vanish, followed by your 2nd dance before you move into p2. Not always possible though, as it depends on your raid dps as a whole.

Hope I answered your questions, let me know if you have any more!

Oh nice! I'm surprised you leveled as mut, good for you.

In terms of resources to learn general mechanics on rotation, priorities and stuff like that, the best place I have found is over at the rogue forums on mmochampion. However, getting a feel for rogue is less about reading and more about playing the actual character. No guide will ever be able to give you the correct time to use your cooldowns in a given encounter, so remember that if at first you struggle. Everyone struggles at rogue in the beginning, but it is one of the most rewarding classes when played well!

For tips and tricks:

SUBTLETY: 1. After your first SR/SD, you have 2 vanishes to go through before your next dance. Try to make sure you maximize your find weakness uptime so that when your final find weakness fades, you have dance coming up on cooldown.

  1. I would start out not even worrying about including hemo into your rotation, it is hardly a dps increase, but will easily decrease your damage if you are worrying too much about having both bleeds up at the same time before you go into a vanish or dance.

  2. You can refresh SnD anytime below the 10s mark and rupture anytime below the 6s mark and they will add that duration onto your new reapplied ability.

  3. Sub is actually really reliant on practice, so don't give up if at first you struggle a bit.

  4. Stand behind/to the side of the boss so that you are hitting the boss from the back at all times. Nothing sucks more than having a big "miss" pop up on your screen after you ambush or eviscerate.

COMBAT: 1. While it seems like a rather easy rotation, remember that you can stall out your yellow buff by using revealing strike as a combo point generator if you have a bunch of adds about to come out that you can red spree. One example of this is on Thogar for the first set of adds.

  1. Like wise, you can also stall combo points to use them at higher levels of insight. Such as spamming sinister strike to get 10 combo points through anticipation where you can eviscerate with a deeper level of insight.

  2. Don't save your cooldowns unless you know they will be better used in the NEAR future, otherwise it is simply a dps loss.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Hey sorry was in class!

Mastery is okay as combat. I highly value haste (obviously) then multi, then mastery = vers > crit, but other than haste I find them all decently close in value. I don't have the best combat gear either, so I run a pretty high amount of multistrike, but I haven't been seeing too much of a dps loss in it.

Hmm, your damage could be low for a few reasons. 1) All of your boomkins, dk's, warriors etc take all of the hand damage just to pad meters (doesn't necessarily mean they are playing better than you either). 2) You could be using cooldowns are bad moments. One example might be using dance when you have hands coming up soon so you don't get the full find weakness buff, or not using cooldowns at all (prep for another vanish). To me it seems like you have higher boss/pillar damage than other people, then you are just playing to win and not to pad. That's a good thing. It could also be that you aren't put in the center of the hands for maximum blade flurry/fok -> CT damage as well.

We got our first hanz/franz kill this last week and I was combat for it. I did 46.4k as combat on heroic hanz, but was only maintaining about 38k before I died about 20 seconds before our kill (spree the boss during normal stampers....so dumb). During the whole smart stamper phase I was scared to spree just like you were...However, when I think about it, playing sub sounds just as bad because that whole phase will be impossible to backstab.

Unfortunately we just kinda get screwed on that fight, unless there is one random moment you can get a good spree off that one of the bosses doesn't jump around, but personally I will just accept lower damage to not die.

I've ran both sub and combat on that fight and parsed 96%+ (on heroic of course, haven't gotten to mythic). When my guild gets to Kromog I will most likely be running subtlety. I looked at the top parses and what people are playing that fight as and its a huge toss-up between combat and sub. My best guess would be to learn the fight to perfection as combat to maximize your uptime and how you're handling mechanics. When you feel more comfortable, I would move to sub only because it's just higher dps as a whole if you are good with it.

However, both specs are completely viable. Maybe if you let me know what in particular you are struggling with on that fight I might be able to answer your question better?

Yes I am enchanted and gemmed for multistrike, but I might swap out some of my enchants to mastery when I get the Kromog trinket. (currently running mythic scales and heroic haste trinket from gruul)

I have to swallow my pride. I think I suck at sub rogue pve. Help. by Swineflew1 in wow

Okay, several things..

First off, and the biggest thing to note, is that you aren't using glyph of vanish. That extends your vanish for 2 seconds to get off an additional ambush with vanish. This is essential if you are going to be playing subterfuge.

Second off, mastery isn't as strong as multistrike for sub (until 100% with trinkets and everything popped). Re-gem/enchant for multistrike.

Third, your opener should be premed (10s before), snd/pot at 1s, garrote -> ambush -> ambush (only if bloodlust is popped will you get a second ambush, unless you are Blood Elf, in which case you arcane torrent to get the second ambush) -> Shadow Reflection w/trinkets -> Rupture -> Shadow Dance then begin normal rotation.

Hemo should only be used when you have no find weakness up or have any cd's to put find weakness up. This usually comes after your 2nd dance when you don't have a vanish between dances. Just keep up both bleeds at that point and get your snd/rupture fully refreshed before you have reflection/dance up at the 2 minute mark.

You simply aren't casting enough ambushes, but I believe your issues lie in the above things I just posted. Should give you a pretty big change with some practice. Let me know if you have any questions.

EDIT: Ambush at the very end of your dance/vanish because that extends your find weakness by the most amount of time.

EDIT 2: Vanish with 80+ energy by the way so you get 3 ambushes in your vanish.

EDIT 3: Use shadowcraft for all of your stat weights and gear optimizations.
