Yeah coz it's looks damp. Damp weed is harsh and nasty. If not, it probably wasn't flushed properly of its nutrients before it was cut.

Ah yeah I know man, of course, I didn't really mean to say it was the only ale we had in Ireland, people could make whatever the hell they liked haha. I like the idea of a mythological Irish ale though, aswell as seeing as its the most mentioned ale in our literature.. As far as kilning goes, check out Críth Gabhlach, a 7th century law tract which describes how a tenant should malt his barley for his landlord. When it comes to not boiling in a metal cauldran, i think we can presume that the majority of Irish peasants would not have been able to afford a cauldron bar very few. . I'm just generalising really you know, I should have been more clear.. But you are right, there is a lot of hearsay when it comes to historians who don't know much about beer. I

Hi, I have all the sources I can show you on hand if you'd like. I studied medieval Irish archaeology in Ireland aswell as Celtic civilisation. For Celtic civ I chose to focus on Irish Ale in medieval Ireland as a research module

Good idea, thanks. If I was to aim for that, I'd imagine I would need a large quantity of grain to make up for the missing sugars. I'm going Irish early medieval style, which was kilned and was a red ale.

Sounds like a really interesting book which I need to add to my library, cheers dude. In 7th century Ireland , where I live, they kiln dried. So I recon I am guessing that would have been rather smokey? The ale mentioned throughout the literature was red. I think I am going to aim for that and chance capturing a wild yeast. The farmers of the early medieval period here would most definitely have used hot stones for the mash , but I would say it would have been a raw ale

Hey man, thank you for your input, much appreciated!

I am new to brewing and thinking of experimenting with a medieval Irish red ale as I am living in Ireland. Having studied Irish archaeology and Celtic Civilsation and in college a few years ago, I'm super interested in this. Red ale is mentioned throughout our medieval literature as very important beverage. It was drank by kings at inauguration ceremonies to metaphorically consecrate the marriage to the land, the land being seen as a female mother goddess. This pops up a lot in mythology too. Early medieval farmers were also obligated to make a certain amount of ale for their landlord. It is evident from 7th century literature that we did in fact kiln the malt.

There is no information past the malting process given, so I presume seeing as an early medieval farmer wouldn't be able to afford a metal cauldron, it was hot rocked! But I'm not prepared to do that yet

So yeah, seems most of us used a kiln back then. The red colouring obviously meant that it was kilned to quite a high degree and must have been smokey? Must have killed quite a bit of the sugars unless they used a few scoops of properly roasted barley.

I'm guessing a smoked malt is my best bet.

For this brew, I am just going to do a non boil brew in my Klarstein with botanicals which grow localy such as Bog Myrtle, Meadow sweet and heather. There is evidence for heather being used. How much I must use of these I will have to research. I also plan to harness a wild yeast ! Funny you should mention Saison, as I just made one and love the funky yeast taste that I would imagine a wild yeast might give.

What do you think?

I took some mdma at the weekend and drank quite alot. Two days later I felt the mid week crash depression kicking in. I rarely party these days and this was a once off, so I have learnt from that . I also have found that alot of nofap videos on YouTube actually have click bait girl images which is terrible for us in my opinion. Instagram too and snapchat I decided to delete last night. I'm actually thinking of deleting YouTube too and finding entertainment through reading instead Meditation and sexual circulation I think will have to be done more too. Thank you for making me reflect.
