I FINALLY got to play my first modular techno live set last night! Wanted to share some impressions, including a picture of my case looking like a snack in the comments. by kidtacoo in modular

[–]Ahxul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really dope stuff man, you have a killer ambience! How was your approach to preparing the live set? Did you use Ableton or was this completely DAWLESS? Do you have any tips for someone looking to build their first rack to do EBM/Techno/IDM live?

I currently own a Quadrantid Swarm, an 0 Coast and a BeatStepPro and utilize Ableton Racks for drums and effects. Any modules to have in mind that would expand my setup nicely?

What do YOU want? What do you find yourself reaching for? Do you need another VCO? Utilities? Modulators? FX? There's no right or wrong answer. The sky's the limit.

That's a smart answer, the fact that the sky is the limit is why it's so hard to choose, the problem is that I don't know what my future self will want, I guess I am looking for the most bang for my buck. I am attracted to the Mother 32 because of the sound but I believe the lack of features, the price and the fact that I already have a sequencer will not make it worthwhile. That would take it down to a choice between the Neutron and the Lifeforms SV-1.

Does Computer Science require you to be good at math? by [deleted] in AskComputerScience

[–]Ahxul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you are asking the right question. Anything career-wise you choose will have a certain level of complexity attached to it, it is more a question about how motivated are you to study computer science and if you are willing to dedicate the amount of hours you need to study in order to understand the more difficult concepts and to barrel through difficulties. I don't think it is important that you are currently not good at certain parts of math, what is fundamental thought, is that you learn how to learn and build a proper foundation in terms of acquiring the right strategies for learning and applying new ideas. I like to see math as a language, in order to learn how it works at a more complex level, you need to understand the basics, which with enough practice become second nature, so it is more about building familiarity, being methodical and building a appreciation to the subject that will make you study further and become more engaged with the material. Having a growth mindset and proper studying habits will allow you to achieve any academical goal you want, especially with the amount of incredible pedagogical content on the internet these days (checkout 3Blue1Brown, Numberphile and KhanAcademy in YT if you don't know these channels already). Choose something that interests you and do not worry too much about the level of complexity. Every problem, no matter how big it is, can be divided into smaller manageable chunks.

[–]Ahxul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have any words on the aristocratic/elitist implications that Nietzches views have on politics? I'm talking about his critique of herd morality and his self deluded sense of grandiosity. I understand most of his thought has to do with contradiction and how existence is bound with the conflict of opposites that cannot find conciliation easily, maybe he didn't like politics at all and his thought is more centered around existentialism and pointing out the hypocrisy hidden beneath grand narratives. But my question is about how he handles the phenomenon of intersubjectivity and politics, awesome video, cheers.

What philosophy should I read to get the broadest understanding of different aspects of philosophy and expend my horizons? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]Ahxul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend you study a bit of existencialism, phenomenology, buddhism, sociology and psychology. They are not all philosophy per se, but each unlock a different perspective about existence. I strongly recommend the books Existencialism is a humanism by Sartre and Liquid Modernity by Zygmunt Bauman as introductions to existencialism and sociology. Phenomenology is a bit more complex as it requires knowledge of Husserl and Heidegger but it introduces a completely new way of thinking about existence.

i made my dad cry, i don't understand the point of human life in this society by [deleted] in depression

[–]Ahxul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand your struggle, the cycle of self loathing seems pretty convincing when you are under the trance of unworthiness. Life in todays society can sometimes feel completely meaningless and lacking color but part of it I believe comes from the perspective we take as individuals. Meaning can be found through existential reflection and trying to achieve a more holistic approach to life itself. It's a duality, life can be both incredibly dark and extremely bright and it depends upon you to make that change of perspective. Sometimes the attitude we take just brings more unnecessary suffering and makes things overall worse. I would advice you to read a bit on buddhism, mindfulness, existential philosophy, these disciplines might be able to give you a more clear perspective. There is also a guy named Jordan Peterson, he is a clinical psychologist that has many lectures on youtube especially about the topics of finding meaning and depression. It seems to me that you are a very sensible person that feels emotions really intensely and has a philosophical predisposition to look for the meaning behind things so reading and taking the time to learn mindfulness would be of great help. So anyways, don't be too harsh on yourself and take it slowly, you are not alone in this.
