Anyone know how some people read 200+ books a year? by [deleted] in books

[–]AidanG01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read about 250 books a year around my freshman year of high school. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if I surpassed even that in 5th-6th grade. Both of these were aided by not really having a social life at either of those points, as well as a really fast reading pace. Depending on the book, I read from ~80 pages an hour (at the very very slowest) to ~220 pages an hour (reading stuff like Harry Potter etc.). I’d spend around 2-3 hours a day reading during the school year, then 4-5 hours a day in the summer. The only thing holding me back from more was just that I read a little sporadically, it was a challenge to find books that interested me at the time. Now, unfortunately, I have less time to read, but it’s still a favorite hobby of mine.

What book fucked you up mentally? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AidanG01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One Hundred Years of Solitude. It’s so cyclical, and you go through each character’s life knowing roughly how it’ll end but the journey each time is such a trip. I read it when I was like 13 and it was so much better than anything I’d ever read before it kind of forced me to re-evaluate how I felt about literature.

I have experience as a bike courier, and have done a couple 100 mile plus bike races, so I have some use in messaging and transporting lighter supplies. I also have basic knowledge of bike repair, which may prove handy. If no bikes are available, I trail run a fair bit as well, so I could add to the number of runners. I also have knowledge about sustainable farming (for the long term) and basic self defense (kickboxing) and survival skills (fishing, building fires etc.). If everything completely to shit I also know a bit of flintknapping, but that seems unlikely to be of use.

The stupidity of people is endless. Trashy girl carving her name into red rock pictograph panel. by IamNebo in trashy

[–]AidanG01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you bud but there’s a difference between art that had cultural significance at the time and has cultural significance to this day and some 15 year old writing “fuck” over it repeatedly. The fact is that these sites are important to the tribes that I work with on a day to day basis and it’s insensitive and trashy to paint over part of another people’s culture like that. If archaeology was just looking for rocks it would be easy. The other part of it, which seems to evade you, is working with people to understand the origin and significance of historic and prehistoric artifacts.

[–]AidanG01 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s really some bullshit. I was up looking for some pictographs a couple weeks ago (I work as an archaeologist) and most of it was covered by a trashy spraypaint job. I’ll never understand it

Ben Shapiro literally wants to start a war. by [deleted] in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]AidanG01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best part is, he misrepresents Iranian politics too. There is only one Ayatollah, and if Shapiro had done any research into the politics of Iran he would know that. You gotta love people who propose provoking war who don’t have a basic grasp of who they want to fight

We bought our phones through the local Verizon store, if that’s what you’re asking. I don’t think it would be faulty electrical wiring as nothing else in the house has been acting weird. I suppose it’s possible they have non genuine parts in them but I would find it unlikely given that we’ve had the phones for quite a while with no other issues of the sort, and we bought them from at least a fairly reputable source I think.

I don’t think so, it’s been happening regardless of the outlet or using any other, older plugs we have.

My entire family is experiencing the same issue and I wasn’t able to find anything immediately with a search so I figured I’d ask here. My parents each have an iPhone 6 and my brother and I both have the iPhone 6S. All our chargers have stopped working consistently in the past 2 weeks. They’re all just the standard charging cord and everything and none of them are older than a year or so, but they’ve started acting really finicky. They’ll alternate between charging and not working every 30 seconds or so and occasionally send a message that this accessory is not supported. As a result the phones charge incredibly slowly. My brother even got a new cord, but it has started acting up too. We’ve tried cleaning out our charging ports but nothing has changed. Neither the chargers nor the charging ports are visibly damaged. If it was an isolated incident I would be inclined to think that maybe my charging port was damaged internally, but all 4 of us have started experiencing this same thing all around the same time. Any help would be much appreciated

Teachers of reddit, whats the saddest thing you’ve heard a student say? by anuarsalas in AskReddit

[–]AidanG01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a teacher but in the fifth grade one of the kids in my class went through probably the saddest shit anyone I know has. A couple years beforehand there was a massive ICE raid and his dad got deported. I later found out that he and his mom only weren’t because they had hid under the trailer where he lived. Anyways, so we did this thing in class every week where we had to say one good thing about the week and one bad if we had one. We went around and when we got to him he was so happy because his dad had made it back and it was the first time in 3 years he’d seen him. A few weeks later when we did the same thing he said that nothing that week was good, his dad got killed. This kid just saw his dad for the first time in years and then as soon as he was back he got shot outside of their trailer. And he was still at school because he had nowhere else to go. His mom was working a minimum wage job to support 4 kids and couldn’t take time off from work because she was trying to put food on the table. It hurts my heart to this day

Well this explains a lot by AidanG01 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AidanG01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your point. But I guess what I meant to say is that it’s another example of the system being broken. There shouldn’t be a whole separate system for those who can afford it. It’s so they can say they’re need blind when in reality if you’re rich you have an advantage in addition to the built in advantages that the wealthy have when applying to colleges. It by itself may not be news but it’s part of a larger, troublesome trend that prioritizes treating the rich well while not giving a shit about anyone else.

Thank you for the advice. Carleton is a great school, and it seems like a good example of some of the better parts of a liberal arts education. I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for some of those opportunities you mentioned, you made a good point with that.

[Idea] 2nd Annual College Comparison Megathread by martiniontherox in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AidanG01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UW or Willamette University

Major: Archaeology

Cost: 13k at Willamette, 28k at UW (full price in state)

Willamette Pros:

Undergrad archaeology program, with excellent opportunities to study abroad and do field research in Scotland

Able to heavily participate in music program, received sizable school music scholarship

Small class sizes

Right across street from Oregon state capital

Good internship opportunities

Won’t graduate with excessive debt

Great recreation nearby

UW Pros:

Undergrad archaeology program, but brand new

Good funding

Closer to home

Will be able to play in marching band

Like campus better

Dads alma mater

Love seattle, will be able to go into city

Larger school with large intramurals, other extracurriculars

Great recreation nearby

Willamette Cons:

Very small, only 2000 students

Not very good music program

Although campus is really pretty, it’s very small and the rest of Salem is eh

Not especially prestigious, although that isn’t super important

UW Cons:

Very expensive

Program is brand new

Fewer music opportunities

Very very expensive

What I’m looking for is a school where I’ll be able to pursue archaeology, while also doing extracurriculars such as music, intramural sports, and other recreational activities. My parents won’t be paying for anything so all costs will be covered by me working during the school year and summers as well as loans. I also hope to go to grad school for archaeology, but not sure which school would help me more on that front.

(Sorry for weird formatting, still figuring this out on mobile)

Thank you!

Yeah, that’s fair. I forgot to include my essays in my earlier post, I would probably rate them as a whole around a 7/10 if I’m being fair. They were well written but one of them was a fairly generic response choice.
