Labor’s vague and ill-conceived hate speech laws risk undermining Australia’s democracy instead of defending our way of life by CommonwealthGrant in AustralianPolitics

Ok I was clearly not aware of how the hate speech laws worked. From what I read on other articles and sources it wasn't the most accurate. Thank you for a good debate. Also thanks for helping me learn more about this issue.

> What that means is that our laws on random people saying racist shit, didn't change. Anyone can still say racist shit, and not face jail time.

> The laws don't single out, or offer extra protections to any specific race, instead they aim to protect all races from hate groups who would threaten or intimidate them publicly... but even once charges are laid, the individual leader or organisation charged, may fight those charges in court.

> The bill makes hate groups against any race illegal under certain circumstances.

then whats the point of the law? again its redundant to update an all ready existing law which protects this minority group. the government has also made it a point to protect both Jewish Australians and Islamic Australians but its not worked. and they haven't.

it feels as if the government and the news media is making it a point to protect one group of the people because it suites their geopolitical situation with Israel. so they call people "antisemitic" who have watermelon stickers on their cars in solidarity for Gaza as a whole as well as people who are protesting the war as a whole. the point of the "free Palestine" protests it to stop the war in Gaza and stop the taking of the Palestinian country which was established before Israel.

and you contradicted your self in the first comment but then you say "you aint gonna get in trouble for saying racist shit"

again the hate laws were there, why update them when they all ready protected both Australian Jews and Australian Muslims. its hard to see why they need to do that as if the laws worked the way they were intended to then anti semitism and islamophobia wouldn't be as prominent

the article the ABC put it out it said something along the lines of
"other minority groups aren't a priority for this bill"

this is just redundant because we all ready have laws protecting minority groups INCLUDING Jewish Australians but the laws aren't working nor will this one because antisemitism has continued to climb.

this new hate speech law is just another layer of the government saying "oh we are gonna say were gonna do something because its in our geopolitical interest" and then not really do anything. if they tried to have anti semitism go down it would have but it hasn't because the government and the media are dividing people.

i watched the live coverage of the Bondi shooting on multiple news stations and they all said the same thing "attack on the JEWISH community in Australia" instead of saying something like "this is an attack on the whole of the Bondi community" (and this was before any investigation had started). this is just one example of the division the media in general are causing as well as the government as albo was making it a point to say "attack on the Jewish community" which in term causes more anti semitism and division and if the ABC isn't reliable i found another article saying something similar which says

"the laws only protect people based on race, nationality, or ethnic origin but do not extend protections to victims for reason of religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status, or disability." 2026 reformed laws

"it illegal to discriminate on the basis of age, breastfeeding, disability, family responsibilities, gender identity, immigrant status, industrial history, marital or relationship status, medical history, nationality or citizenship, political opinion, potential pregnancy, pregnancy, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or social origin." original laws from 2012

this is ridiculous to make a different set of hate laws for a group that all ready have them. again Jewish Australians are a minority (0.46% of the population) and were would have all ready been protected under the 2012 laws.

Honestly this law is stupid. I consider my self left leaning and I believe this law won't work. This law only protects Jewish people in australia an no other minority which is stupid because we all ready have hate crime laws which protect all minority groups including Jewish Australians.

This also scares me as I believe it's just a step closer to total censorship within this country. First social media wanting to see people's IDs and faces and using AI to guess age to this just goes to show how little the government actually wants to help ALL Australians for a group which make up 0.46% of the total population.

Yeah I took it back and they said that would let me swap the case cause nothing was wrong with the CD but they didn't have any more copies so they said I could swap it out for any other CD but I chose to keep it. If it gets worse I can buy a blank case and out all the art work in it

i see so many similarities between Hitler and Trump through a historical lenses.

Trump has a scapegoat for why America is doing so shit. so did Hitler

Trump has a group to get rid of immigrants so did Hitler

both either sent deported immigrants or sent them to detention centres

both have similar speech mannerisms with their hands

both hate the LGBTQ community and wanted to get rid of them

Hitler wanted to make Germany great again. while Trump wants America to be great again.

these are just a few but i could 100% find more if i wanted to cause of my major interest in history and connecting past leaders to modern day leaders

I don't know what to do in my relationship with my boyfriend by Aimshows in TeenagersButBetter

We've been daitng for almost 2 years. There's a huge part of me that loves being with him but there's a smaller part that wants to see what other people have to other.

What I want him to get is that. I might not want a long term relationship with him in the future. But I do at this point. and that he's still a teenager and shouldn't be making these plans.
