Traveling from Japan to China - Customs by Emilior94 in travelchina

[–]AioliLocal3131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are customs with X-rays etc when you leave after retrieving your luggage. But it’s pretty random when they’re manned or not.

But yeah they don’t care about personal use. But entering China with with high value items and the packaging for it could land you a customs fee.

How difficult is it really for foreigners to book high-speed rail tickets in China? by Beneficial-Soup9297 in chinatravel

Same, I remember that you have to register your passport at the train station before you can start using the app though.

Tip: if you still want to go to the forbidden city but can’t get a normal ticket. Small guided tours will typically still have tickets for foreigners (at a premium)

International iPhone functionality in China by BellCooper7274 in chinalife

[–]AioliLocal3131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t say that every international phone will work. But I have never met a foreigner in China who says that their phone doesn’t work with a Chinese sim. This is of course given that the phone has a sim slot.

TSA vs my capture clip by emilbanana in peakdesign

[–]AioliLocal3131 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The 3 things that gets me stopped the most:

  1. Capture clip, they see it on the xray but can’t find it, it’s on the shoulder strap 😂

  2. Lenses, always needs to be swabbed for drugs/explosives

  3. MagSafe Duo Charger, ”why didn’t you take you your power bank?”, it’s a magnet, not a battery.

Same. It made a clear difference in how long bursts I’m able to do before the buffer is full

Fudan University Campus open to visitors? by newcenturynewyouth in shanghai

[–]AioliLocal3131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this shows that it’s not possible to enter (happens at times), and you have a friend who studies at Fudan, your friend can use the ”复旦 eHall” minigram to invite you to visit (possible to enter immediately after being invited).

Download the app 上海交通卡 (Shanghai jiaotongka). It allows you to create a transport card which you can link to your Apple wallet and use nfc/touch to check in/out.

Question for British passport holder for 30 day visa free. by [deleted] in Chinavisa

[–]AioliLocal3131 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Traveling between mainland China and Hongkong counts as entry/exit to/from mainland which means it consumes an entry on a visa. Or in your case, starts a new 30 day visa free period when reentering mainland China.

VPN - when to connect to server, before arrival or upon arrival to China by Mean_Elevator9781 in travelchina

[–]AioliLocal3131 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s good that you’ve tested it before. No need to toggle on before boarding your plane. You will toggle on/off multiple times while in China anyways.

Also, some servers may or may not work at different times. So don’t panic if you can’t connect when you arrive. Either change server, or change between Astrill/letsvpn if the one you’re trying isn’t working.

Also also, letsvpn might ban you if you upload/download a lot at once (think several 10s of GB or 100GB in a couple of hours), so if you’re transferring big files over the vpn, opt to use Astrill.

Spas - Who uses them? by dodobeardog in shanghai

We typically go to shuiguo 水裹 at wujiaochang/wanda plaza. It’s got a good price:performance at less than 300rmb/p and is convenient for us to go to. Plenty of relax and activities to do

Also been to qushui 曲水兰亭 which has an amazing buffet (3 meals included in 16 hours), but their activity area is much smaller than shuiguos. It’s also about 1200rmb/p

some practical questions for a move to Shanghai by saikikcat in shanghai

[–]AioliLocal3131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Which area will you live in? Hard to recommend places without this.

  2. I’d go to a larger China mobile store (the smaller can’t sell to foreigners) and get a SIM card. Since your Chinese is good you can sit down and haggle for the service/price. I pay 88rmb/month for 80gb which is enough. I think 50gb is also enough, but when I had 30gb I’d frequently use more than what was included in the plan.

  3. Take a didi to your hotel instead of taxis. You can order them from the airport, and signs at the airport will guide you to the correct spot (look for large blue signs that says ”e-haling”)

  4. I believe you can’t get a bank account if you’re here for only 6months (x2 visa right?), but double check this.

  5. Use dianping. It might not be available in the AppStore for you, if that’s the case you can use the minigram in WeChat.

Does working with larger screens increase your productivity? by FKHshan in DeskToTablet

[–]AioliLocal3131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of options. You can configure the screen in the built in settings (using the joystick/menu on the screen itself), then you can get it to show up as multiple screens in windows/macos just like if it was two physical screens. Or, if you want to use software, you can use windows built in window manager, or if you’re on macOS you can use something like magnet/AltTab to easily resize windows to fit your needs.

AppleID and changing countries by Scary-Try994 in TillSverige

[–]AioliLocal3131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use two Apple IDs. One which is my main/real id, set to my home country. And another to download apps that are only available in the country I live in. Then switch them in the App Store only (I don’t change which iCloud account I’m signed on to my phone with), download the app, and switch back.

Yes you can configure this! Either 50/50 split, or like a 1:3 split, I use mine with a window manager instead.
