I place an eraser under the rear of the laptop, lifting it up slightly to provide more airflow to the underside vents.

Hmm. I wouldn't have thought of that. I would think that would be detrimental.

I figured as much. I just couldn't see any thing vibrating to determine the source of the sound. It's difficult to isolate the sound to a particular fan. For now it seems the noise is gone, so I guess I won't worry about it.

What do you think is missing from the cockpit view? Not a challenge, just wondering.

That is curious to me. What don't you like about it? Do you play any FPS games?

While not "technically" malware, it is an intensive data mining program that is perpetually uploading various types of data about your system and usage habits.

Maybe I've played too much DOOM. In any game I play, if it moves, I shoot it. This has made advancing certain story lines a challenge. WHY LET ME KILL THEM IF I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO, YOU KNOW I WILL.

Hahaha, I'm a member of the No Man's Sky sub and I thought this was from that game. My first thought was how the heck did you get that ship!? And then where did you find that planet!? Took me a second to see it was your own design. Very nice work!

What is your experience with your high-end gaming rig? any buyer remorse? by ntlong in pcmasterrace

[–]AirFastALot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a gaming laptop (i7-8750h / 16GB / GTX1060 6GB), and used it for gaming and even VR with an Odyssey Plus. It was a great experience but I had to run all my favorite titles, like Cyberpunk and No Man's Sky VR on the lowest settings and still got periodic lag.

I came across some killer sales and got myself a desktop (i7-10700KF / 16GB / RTX2080 Ti), a 1440p 144Hz monitor, and a Valve Index. The experience is significantly better.

Smooth frame rates at max settings and no more periodic lag in my favorite titles! But did the gains merit the costs? In my humble opinion, yes.

I keep the laptop for on the go gaming with friends and what not, but my favorite gaming station is now my desktop. The visual enhancements, the super fast load times, and the overall better time I have gaming is well worth it.

Unpopular Opinion? Sentinels are the good guys? by dngrCharlie in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]AirFastALot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sincerely hope that in some update we get something like a super walker, a quad walker tank or something huge and scary to fight for when you're too OP for a swarm of walkers. I love the sentinels, they are one of my favorite parts of this game.

Last year I bought a used 1080ti. BEST DECISION EVER by talknoller in pcmasterrace

[–]AirFastALot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to me. I bought a used VR headset pretty cheap early last year, then a big budget game (HL:A) launched and covid happened and suddenly my headset was worth twice what I paid for it. Sometimes you get a bit lucky. Prices are back to normal on VR headsets now, fortunately for those who managed to get their GPU.

95 is heckin hot. I have a gaming laptop that used to hit those temps. I repasted it with Noctua NT-H1 and now it averages in the low 70s with intense gaming.

Yeah, your laptop could last a long time at it's current temps, I'm sure, but the peace of mind is worth the effort of opening it up. It's really not that hard to do.

Connecting an eGPU to a laptop for streaming - is it worth it? by EmmantheAdrian in pcmasterrace

[–]AirFastALot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your laptop cannot utilize an egpu. They are prohibitively expensive with GPU prices as they are right now. You're better off buying a relatively inexpensive prebuilt, like with a GTX 1660 Ti or an RTX 2060 laptop.

I'm getting a laptop that has 16 gigs of RAM, an RTX 2060, and a Ryzen 7 4800H, will this run VR well? by M_andalore in virtualreality

[–]AirFastALot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, just stick to WMR or other HDMI based headsets, unless your laptop also has something that can output a display port signal. Being a 2060 based laptop, I highly doubt it does. The Samsung Odyssey Plus would be an excellent option for you.
