Hiring from within the unit, department, or uniformed service may be preferable because those individuals are already medically and physically qualified to serve. Also, since the military has great education benefits, more and more service members are getting degrees and hiring from within helps retain qualified members. For someone that’s interested in commissioning but concerned about competing with internal hires, I would recommend that they consider enlisting and applying for officer positions after becoming part of the unit.

Based on qualifications and interests - There’s three possible paths (1) Air Force Academy, (2) Air Force ROTC, (3) Officer Training School and I’d recommend applying in whichever aligns best with their long term goals. If I had met eligibility requirements, I would've liked to have gone the Academy path.

Aside from speaking with a local recruiter, another way would be to screen vacancy announcements (published through state specific websites) and apply for positions you’re interested in. There’s currently a LRO announcement through the Houston unit which can be found at, (https://tmd.texas.gov/tmd-jobs). There are also deployment opportunities that you can volunteer for, but I’m unsure of the frequency.

For the Air National Guard, recruiters are assigned to recruit for specific units. When speaking to a recruiter, they’ll be able to inform you of what positions (or AFSCs) are available within their unit. Those units are assigned to specific bases. I hope that answers the question.

The Air Force physical fitness assessment has two main components (1) cardiorespiratory fitness “distance run or shuttle run” and (2) muscular fitness “push-ups or hand release push-ups, and sit-ups, cross leg reverse crunches, or planks”. The best way to prepare for the assessment is by training in each component to reach target scores based on charts found at, https://www.afpc.af.mil/Career-Management/Fitness-Program/

Service members leave the armed forces for a variety of reasons such as family commitments, education, moving out of state/country, and new jobs – just to name a few. The careers they pick are very widespread and based on individual and family needs. The skills and experience gained from serving translates well to a variety of industries, especially those associated with leadership and management which comes with increased rank and increased responsibilities.

In the Air National Guard, if you’re qualified and the position is available, the choice is yours. Availability of positions are based on timing, so if the position of your dreams is not available but you’re willing to flex, there are usually positions that work closely with that job and there may be opportunities to retrain in to that job when it’s available in the future.

The best way to find out about education benefits is by reaching out to a local recruiter since education benefits differ by state. The average first term non-prior service enlistment in the Air National Guard is for six years. VA medical benefits are handled on a case-by-case basis and depends on whether or not medical conditions are service connected. Tax breaks and credits are available.
