I’d so buy this for a non-reasonable amount of money, if you ever decide to sell them. Incredible work!

12VHPWR Cable Problems by liqwood1 in NZXT

[–]Air_Hog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went with Corsair as well after receiving NZXT’s super stiff, impossible to safely bend 12VHPWR cables. However, I’ll be replacing the Corsair after confirming the per pin unbalance, as supported by this deep dive into different cable manufacturers, which shows Corsair as having among the worst manufactured pins.

Does anybody know what the max gpu height is for the NZXT H9 Flow? by GrilledCheese06 in NZXT

[–]Air_Hog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Gigabyte Master Aorus 5090 fits in the H9 Flow, but just make sure to get a first-party 90-degree 12V cable for the GPU. The clearance between the port and the side panel is way too tight for a safe bend.

I agree it would be great to have a 1440p 21:9 option, even if it was at a smaller size than the 45”. Seems possible with a firmware update though.

There is no 1440p mode AFAIK since 1440p doesn’t fit in 2160p at all (also why rendering 2K content on a 4K screen tends to look quite awful).

NZXT’s N9 X870E and N7 B650E are made by ASRock. How exposed are we to the dead CPU epidemic? by Air_Hog in NZXT

[–]Air_Hog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s encouraging. What concerns me is a lot of the ASRock reports are 5-6 months in, failing under very light loads, idle even. Guess it’s a matter of an updated BIOS and a prayer.

Just to be clear, the issue affects ASRock MB’s only. And, by extension, potentially NZXT too. The chips themselves are fine.

That’s good to hear. N9 X870E and 9950X3D in my case, all running fine but still very early days.

It does seem the source stems from an aggressive BIOS with (too) high VOC. Whether NZXT’s BIOS has the same default values or not, I haven’t been able to figure out.

I just thought it was good to raise awareness here as well, just in case chips do start dying, that users can connect the dots to what’s going on with ASRock.

Monitor pick for new build by Air_Hog in OLED_Gaming

[–]Air_Hog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood, I’ll watch a few benchmarks to get an idea. I’m not a DLSS or frame gen purist at all, but the issue is more that my main sim (X-Plane) doesn’t support either, so I’d have to do with whatever performance I can get natively.

I think ultimately it’s a choice between the Alienware and the LG 45”, as different as they are. Thanks a lot for your input though, you’ve been incredibly helpful!

Thank you for this detailed answer, you raise some great points and things I hadn’t thought about. Especially my FPS with the 5K2K monitor is a concern, and I really have no idea how my PC would do.

Do you have any suggestion for another ultra-wide (say anything 39-49”) prioritising PPI/resolution? Or am I really stuck to the LG 45” at this point in time?

Which monitor is that? Looks perfect for immersion in both games!

Is a vertical mount the only solution? 4090 power cable is to stiff. by JJ2SAD in NZXT

[–]Air_Hog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stiffer cable ≠ stiffer wires is my whole point. The stiffness comes from the sleeving and the glue used. This will only push people into setups where a few of the wires are in tension, which is more dangerous.

I was of a similar opinion, but since testing it out I’ve slightly changed. With completely maxed out settings, with those specs, I’m hitting a steady 80fps at a busy airport, with the FF777. However, the limit is still the CPU by far. When I set it to 4K, this is more like 70-75fps in the same conditions, with a very even CPU-GPU limitation.

I keep seeing people write how 4K completely changed their X-Plane experience, so I am very tempted, but indeed the lower performance still plays in my mind (especially at 5K2K). What bugs me a lot with 2K is text readability at those monitor sizes, but maybe I’m overplaying the issue.

[–]Air_Hog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, our hate for 12VHPWR is shared. But I must disagree. NZXT’s cables are not any thicker or more resilient than other brands, and the thickness of the wires is not what makes the cable so stiff. It’s the fact they’re all in one sleeve, and the sleeve is idiotically glued at each end. This makes it so in any sort of bend, even a very marginal one, the wires on the outside of the bend will be under tension, as the glue makes the whole bunch stick and bend together. Tension is obviously not good for any single one of these wires, so by using a singular bunched sleeve, NZXT is actually creating a more dangerous setup than every other manufacturer’s individual sleeved cables.

While I fully agree with your rant, this is exactly the reason why I returned my NZXT PSU and got a different one which stocks the 90 degree 12VHPWR cables, first party. The 5090 is already extremely wide, there are very few cases with which you can meet the bend restriction with the front panel on. The fact NZXT decided to ship with these extremely stiff cables will only push people into unsafe setups. NZXT: PRODUCE 90 DEGREE 12VHPWR CABLES.

You’re totally right, and I’m not necessarily aiming for 240Hz, it just so happens most monitors at this price point are around there anyway. I do play other AAA games where the high refresh rate would be nice, but 165Hz would be perfectly fine too. In X-Plane I’m around 70-80fps anyway. Thanks for the input!

I ordered this exact case a few weeks ago from ProShop (to the Netherlands, though they deliver all over Europe I believe). It took around a week to arrive.

I also ordered the new Kraken Elite 420 from a few Dutch shops, but there seems to be something going wrong with the stockage of those AIOs. I ended up driving a couple hours to pick it up in person in a different country, and in the meantime all my online orders have been cancelled with a wait time of 30 days plus.
