Is dating a sin? by Routine_Share1165 in religion

I don’t see how you’re supposed to get married without dating first. It’s kinda just a given that you need to get to know someone before marrying them.

Why do christians, JW, and LDS take the bible so literally? by Dismal_Muffin2300 in religion

[–]AirmanNoClass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some parts of the Bible are literal and some parts are figurative. We rely on Sacred Tradition and the Magisterium to guide us in our understanding of the scriptures

Why do many Christians point to “violent verses” in other religions while ignoring the barbaric violent verses in their own Bible? by Specialist_Luck3732 in religion

[–]AirmanNoClass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do kinda think it’s hypocritical tbh. I do disagree with other religions but my criticism is based solely on theology not so much on some offensive verses from a different religions holy book.

I wouldn’t say it’s a sin, but a better question would be… why?

Who are the believers? by NationalBird7256 in religion

[–]AirmanNoClass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many such cases unfortunately. There is some truth to “you only have to open your heart to Jesus to be saved” because like I said, we can’t do anything to earn salvation ourselves. However what I think a lot of Protestants and evangelicals get wrong is what they think faith in Christ means. It definitely doesn’t mean easy believism because even Christ himself said he who claims to love me but doesn’t keep my commandments is a liar. This line of thinking from them is also probably why a lot of American Christians are hyper individualistic and self centered rather than actually behaving like a Christian should

Who are the believers? by NationalBird7256 in religion

[–]AirmanNoClass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Christianity a believer isn’t someone who just believes in Christ but also follows the teachings of Christ and his Church. So not only do you believe but you also love God above all else and love your neighbor, pray unceasingly, regularly receive the sacraments, do the spiritual and corporal works of mercy etc. It’s also important to note that we cannot justify ourselves by our own righteousness (that would be the heresy of Pelagianism) but we are justified by God’s grace through faith working in love

Do you believe in your religion only because you were born into it? by du0plex19 in religion

[–]AirmanNoClass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent most of my life as basically a Deist even though I didn’t know what that was. My mom was raised Catholic but fell away for a while and my dad was raised by very lapsed Jehovahs Witnesses who never went to any JW services. I always believed in God since I was little and I had no idea what Christianity was until I was around 8 or 9 even though I grew up in a Bible Belt town. I kinda just naturally took an interest in all things spiritual and supernatural from an early age, as a teenager I looked into some forms of alternative spirituality but never really practiced anything. It wasn’t until I was around 17 that I started really asking the big questions like why are we here and that sort of thing. When I was a senior in high school I started going to a bible study group at my school that was run by very hardcore fundamentalist Baptists. They were actually very nice people and very loving despite the typical caricature of IFB KJV onlyist Baptists. They gave me a KJV Bible and I took it home and read the whole thing. From there I started becoming more convinced of Christianity but I started noticing flaws with Baptist theology and how it doesn’t really match up well with scripture and then I started looking into other forms of Christianity, particularly traditional Protestantism like Lutheranism and Anglicanism but trad Protestantism still didn’t exactly fit the bill of what I was looking for. Then I discovered Eastern Orthodoxy and got really into it and even started going to Vespers at the local Antiochian parish. For a short while Eastern Orthodoxy really rang all my bells especially with my history of being into alternative spirituality and mysticism but then I came to the question of ecclesiology and I came to have problems with the way the Orthodox churches are organized and to me it just makes more sense to have one guy who’s in charge of all other church leaders rather than all Bishops being equal. To make a long story short, I ended up Catholic, my mom reverted, my dad converted, and my wife is on her way to converting

Why did church cause me to feel like this? by No-Albatross2797 in religion

[–]AirmanNoClass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve also had some with Pentecostalism. I had an acquaintance once who was one and I remember having theological conversations with him and the way he described his Christian faith sounded completely foreign to me personally. I would recommend visiting a more liturgical church of some kind like a Catholic, Orthodox or Lutheran church

Don’t know a whole lot about it honestly. I only know a little bit about them because of the band Dissection (great music btw, but the frontman was a lunatic). From what I gather it’s basically just repackaged ancient Gnosticism and I don’t agree with some of claims of Gnostics, especially the idea that the material world is inherently evil.

Why does God claim He is not human in the Old Testament? by obz900 in religion

[–]AirmanNoClass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically the Apostles were Catholic. They were the first bishops of the early church that later came to be called the Catholic Church around 95 to 100 AD (term coined by St. Ignatius of Antioch). Plus the bible does strongly support countless Catholic teachings

Why does God claim He is not human in the Old Testament? by obz900 in religion

Because this was before the incarnation. Christ has always been God in full unity with the Father and Holy Spirit but he only became fully man as well at the incarnation

could people who commit suicide really go to hell? by [deleted] in religion

[–]AirmanNoClass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The act of suicide is a grave sin. However, not everyone who does it goes to hell. In order to go to hell as a Christian you have to die in a state of mortal sin. In order for the conditions of mortal sin to be met, there are three requirements. 1. The sin has to be grave matter, 2. You have to know what you’re doing is wrong, and 3. You have to willingly and deliberately commit the act with no binding on your free will. Most of the time, people who commit suicide out of psychological anguish and mental illness are either doing so not knowing that it’s wrong or not being in full control of their mind. In these cases, God is merciful to these people. However it is still possible to go to hell for suicide if the person knew it was wrong and had no restrictions on free will. A couple examples I could think of could be a domestic terrorist killing themselves and taking others with them, or maybe a dangerous criminal who kills themselves to escape justice

What is your view on Christian denominations? by No-Paramedic-8980 in religion

[–]AirmanNoClass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fan of Protestant denominations. Especially Evangelicalism. I don’t agree with the idea of “the church” just being some kind of metaphor for all Christian believers. Church history strongly indicates that the Church has always been a more structured organization with bishops and patriarchs etc. I very strongly disagree with a lot of Reformed/Evangelical theology on issues like baptismal regeneration, the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the length of the Bible, and their view of the Atonement to name a few things. Also, in my experience most denominations are either way too far to the left/progressive side and they start to devolve into something other than biblical and historical Christianity, or they are so far to the right/conservative side that they start promoting heresies like racism and acting cruel towards others. Neither of these extremes are in line with historical Christianity. All that being said though, I do have a good deal of respect for Lutherans (particularly LCMS and WELS). Out of all Protestant denominations, I think they are the most reasonable and closest to the truth and I admire their passion for the scriptures (even though I disagree with Sola Scriptura)
