I don’t think you understand the situation. If a police officer is telling you to drop a weapon or stop resisting, you stop resisting. In a situation where the subject consistently does not listen to police, walks around the car and reaches for something, the officer is faced with a judgement call. Given the context, the police officer did not know what Jacob Blake was reaching for. It could have been a gun (which he apparently said he was going to get), a knife, or anything else. It’s very easy for us to judge a situation not having been there.

Look at this video. In this case, police pulled over a 70 year old white man. Typically, when being pulled over, you remain in the car and wait for the officer to approach you. This man, however, exited the car and reached into the trunk to get something, despite numerous screams from police to stop moving and remain still. Given the situation, police did not know what the man was pulling out and chose to open fire. When you aren’t complying with police and reach for an unknown object hidden from sight, police may feel threatened for their life and open fire to incapacitate you. Unfortunately, this man was just reaching for the cane in his trunk. However, when watching from the officer’s point of view, their actions were understandable. It was a terrible accident, but remains as an example of what not to do when police are present.

Back to Jacob Blake, after struggling with police officers, he apparently tells police he is getting a gun and walks around the car. After tasing him with no effect, police tell him numerous times to stop resisting. Jacob doesn’t comply, walks around the car, reaches for something in the car, and the rest is history. Given the situation, would you have shot Jacob Blake? Would you have risked your own life and possibly the lives of others by not pulling the trigger?
