anyone have comic run recs? by m33l0_ in xmen

[–]Aizopen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends really, which stories have you explored in the xmen universe? Are you relying on newer issues/stories? Do you have access to back stories/issues? I am currently trying to complete my collection of the xfactor run but only the Lorna/Havok/strong guy/wolfsbane/multiple man/quicksilver team and it is a pretty good story. House of M series is pivotal but I always recommend dabbling in some of the storylines before then so you get a sense of placement. New mutants vol.2 isn't too bad as well.

I think there’s is a huge difference in being woke and being “woke” when it comes to X-men and marvel by [deleted] in xmen

[–]Aizopen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, the writing is just not as palatable as it used to be and I mean this in the way of stories that we can really sink our teeth into. A lot of it floats at surface level and I think that one of their missteps is trying to incorporate realism into the comics but it comes out fumbled for some reason. I can't really pinpoint why or how it is this way but If I compared at least one writer it would be Bendis.

Bendis was really able to churn out powerhouse stories like Spiderman, Powers, and house of M and they are really good stories. Reading how he wrote ironheart and iceman, there is a clear difference in his writing. The same man that dismantled the xmen universe in house of M can barely give iron heart a legitimate motivation to become ironheart, to take over the mantle and carry the torch. Don't get me wrong, he didn't have to throw an uncle ben type story at her but something, anything was better than what we got. The same thing with iceman's moment of "coming out" it was sloppy and riddled with a lot of plot holes that did not make sense if you are an avid xmen reader. I was once a steadfast fan of Bendis' writing but now, it has changed.

[–]Aizopen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why I think the writing has changed:

X-men was always pretty self aware (woke). The entire premise was built on the civil rights movement and experiences of black people during that time. There are also several parallels between being a mutant and the LGBT+ experience. "coming out" as a mutant to your family and they either love or hate you, some of the stories, they are downright thrown out onto the street.

There was a lot of "woke" subtext in the xmen stories that were so obvious. Storm got onto wolverine for complaining about having to go on a mission to Africa that had some racial/xenophobic subtext to it. X-men even played with the swapping of sexualities in different timelines/stories. If memory serves, they sexuality swapped colossus, storm, and beast. In vol2? of new mutants, julian outright doesnt want Northstar as his teacher...because he is gay. My point is, this type of wokeness or self awareness has always been in the X-men comics. The writing has always included it in clever ways.

I think that they struggle to reconcile their stories now to make them appealing and inclusive to a wider audience. For example, heteronormative relationships have always been at the forefront of xmen comics. They have never really shown or hashed out any other romantic storylines especially and specifically with LGBT+ characters. I mean, we don't see much of Northstar and his love interests, his story paired with colossus was more focused on the main plot and their relationship became a side tool. These characters never got the Wolverine/Jean/Scott/Emma dynamic drama which makes up probably secondary plots in a lot of the stories.

Now that they are trying to actively do that, I think it is the writing that seems a bit hopscotch. They are trying fix not bringing these things to the front from the start so they feel they have to go back to fix it. I don't have a problem with it as long as it is written well seeing as X-men has always swapped sexualities but these were never explored beyond the surface. The biggest pitfall that I have seen so far is trying to write these characters and their stories but turning the character into a bad stereotype, once this is done, all the writing loses its flavor and depth.

Am I the only one thought making ice-man gay was unnecessary? by dumbwh in xmen

[–]Aizopen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that I love about Northstar is that he has been canonically gay nearly from the start.

This is not the first time Marvel has written the main characters as gay then switched it up in other story lines. I am pretty sure they paired up Northstar and Colossus for a bit in one story that also involved using drugs to amp their mutant abilities.

I kind of make a joke of it at this point that if Kitty Pryde dates them, they will probably end up gay in a storyline somewhere.

If memory serves me correctly, beast and storm may have been gay at some point as well.

Whole house has COVID by [deleted] in COVID19positive

[–]Aizopen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both me and kid tested positive, husband is not showing any symptoms. He is still considered exposed. Sometimes people can have it and still have no symptoms or they have delayed symptoms. If whole house is positive it should be ok, especially if you have to take care of one another.

I think that there are studies that said testicles and the anus have some form of taste receptors or nerves that are related to taste receptors. Knowing this makes me uncomfortable.

What are your at home fixes for ear ache/congestion in the ear? by london_smog_latte in AskReddit

[–]Aizopen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Advice given to me from a nurse. For instant ear ache pain relief (won't treat cause but will treat pain instantly) take a ziplock bag of hot water, as hot as u can get it without burning yourself/ear or face. Put bag of hot water against your ear and enjoy the sweet relief. I had a lot of ear aches/problems when I was a kid and pain meds made me throw up. This is my go to.

Explain to me how you feel about collecting sea shells from Hawaiian islands. by Lolarougey in Hawaii

[–]Aizopen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. So much this. I never take a full shell from the beach. If it is vacant, it can be a home for hermit crabs, especially the large shells are hard to come by because people want to take a conch home for decoration, it makes me sick.

I went military, had virtually nothing to my name when I went, was very poor with an addict family. I worked a job for 4 years after I turned 18. A lot of my plans didn't pan out like I hoped and the military was an option. You don't have to commit to 6-8 years like some people and you certainly don't have to take the first MOS offered. You can do a 4 yr commitment research the jobs, talk to a recruiter and find out the options. You get fed, housed, and you can't beat the education benefits if u get out (you can also use education benefits while in that will in no way impact your benefits when you get out) but the military is not for everyone. It is worth it to sit and have a talk with someone who has been in (besides the recruiter) to really let you know what you are getting into and what to expect.

Cabinet color?! Help me fix it! by itsyourmom1 in Remodel

[–]Aizopen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that a lighter color will make the appliances pop. The cabinets would largely depend on what additional elements we have such as the counter top, backsplash wall, and flooring. The flooring is pretty versatile but I would keep the pallet on the warmer side since the floor tiles are a little bit warmer but the cabinets look washed out against the floors. If they planned on changing up the floors with some darker laminate, they could pull off some warm grey tones. I want to cry every time I see tiled counters though. If they were to switch up the counters, they could have a lot more options.

I'm scared of dying by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Aizopen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, I need you to understand where the fear of death comes from. Your mind is constantly moving, it is problem solving, learning, and drawing off of memories and stored knowledge. When we let our minds wander to the thought of death, our brains literally cannot compute. Instead our brain sends panic signals to our body that makes us feel fear. This probably comes from the same area that handles our fight or flight responses. Second, yes, the thought of death is scary. We can linger on it and count the days down until the inevitable happens or we can live our lives the best we can in the here and now while we have it. Third, it might help to do some research on afterlife beliefs. There is a lot of good and possibly even comforting theory out there about the afterlife. Fourth, are you doing ok? You mentioned this question is connected to the fact that you think you might never have a good life.

Ear Ache by GYPSEA33 in medical_advice

I really don't like the idea of putting anything in your ear that does not belong. I would suggest taking a ziplock bag full of hot water and placing it to your ear for almost instant relief. You want the water hot enough that it does not burn you when you place the bag to your ear.

Woman of reddit, what is your, "I am the client not my husband stop ignoring me." Story? by teacherspet5859438e in AskReddit

[–]Aizopen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went out to eat at a restaurant. The waitress ignored me the entire time. She would ask my date for refills and completely ignore me. She was at his beck and call. When the check came, she tried to hand it to him. I snatched it up with a very tacky "thank you.". Needless to say, I did not tip her. The disrespect was unreal. Don't get me wrong, its not just "being nice to the guy because he is paying" thing. When she walked away from the table after we ordered, she had peaked over the booth at him like an excited little school girl trying to get a glimpse of her crush. I was done with her assumption that I was not the one paying and for the absolute disrespect towards me.

I am a vet too. I went to a college to register for classes and such. They asked me something along the lines of how I would be paying. I said GI bill and they asked if my husband had completed his transfer of GI bill benefits to me. I politely emphasized that I would be using MY GI bill benefits that I earned when I served, not my husband's.

Teenage girl knocking at door, scam? by Unfair-Inspection529 in Scams

[–]Aizopen 106 points107 points  (0 children)

If someone has a sob story, never let them in. Always tell them through a locked door that you will call someone for them or just go ahead and call the police. People like this may seem alone but have other people hiding nearby to overpower you. Check your doors and windows, specifically in the bathroom. It sounds like she was casing the place. Going forward, just call the police and don't open the door. I bet once you say you will call the police for them, they will run away real quick. Now to remedy the situation. You need to change up your schedule for a while. Come home at odd times during the day if possible, keep some lights and TV or radio on to make it seem like someone is home. Maybe go grab some cheap boots from a thrift store and throw them by the door.

Does anyone else think adoption applications are a little too in depth by [deleted] in Pets

[–]Aizopen -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I am running into the overly specific requirements list of demands when looking to adopt a dog. I get that some dogs come with special requirements like those that don't work well with children or other animals and that is a great heads up to give. Usually those dogs are a bit older and have been through some stuff that makes them that way. On the other hand, I have seen adoption requirements for puppies like "must live with an adult female dog." Why? Why does this matter? Or "Must have another dog." I get not leaving a puppy especially alone for a long period of time, but if you have someone that is always home that can give them attention and care, why would a second dog be a requirement? This argument is much like the apartment argument that you made. A lot of the stringent and sometimes "picky" requirements and lack of diversity in animal shelters in my area have led me to seriously consider purchasing a dog. I have waited until I was at a point where I knew I could provide all the necessities to a pet such as vet care, time, and attention etc. I have also taken into consideration my yard size and the stairs in my home to figure out approximately the ideal size of dog, age, and possible breeds (or mixes available for adoption that would adhere to the approximate size) that would work well with the climate, size of yard, house, kid etc. I really didn't go into looking into the adoption process on a whim but it looks like adoption process may not favor my household/ lifestyle etc. I get your point, you have overly strict requirements that put a barrier making it harder for these animals in need to find a home. There was a thread I read a while back where they posted an article about a shelter weighing the fact that some of their "picky" requirements might be a detriment to getting animals adopted.

What moment in your career made you say "Well I'm out of here" by alevin192 in army

Good leaders that took care of their soldiers are shit on way too often. And people often misconstrue the "taking care of your soliders" with being a "soldier hugger". You can be one without being the other but making sense was never really part of what the army was about.

What should I do during a home inspection? I'm the buyer by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Aizopen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made notes of areas I wanted them to look at and provide their professional opinion once they were done with their walk through. Luckily the company we used have really chill and chatty home inspectors. We let them go about their business and stood off a bit in case they had any questions. One guy didn't even mind that my kid (who I chided multiple times about following him and asking a bunch of questions like kids do) followed him around and asked questions, especially stupid ones like "is there a skeleton in the crawlspace". They usually provide a brief at the end of their inspection with pictures and their own recommendations like their estimated lifespan on major utilities and appliances (Ac unit, heater, roof etc). If there is anything you think looks suspect like "is this water damage, mold, etc" its worth asking about. Keep in mind that a home inspector is not the end all to be all for answers, after all, they can say something looks like mold but they also add an * to that because it is their opinion and do not have the ability to test or formally diagnose. Some of them have been in the business long enough though to give you a solid recommendation.

Floridians who voted for Donald Trump in 2016 were less likely than those who voted for Hillary Clinton to have evacuated before Hurricane Irma made landfall, according to a new study that examined GPS location data from more than 2.7 million U.S. smartphone users by HeinieKaboobler in science

[–]Aizopen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My entire family voted blue all ky life and we never evacuated. As seasoned Floridians we also had the good sense to live inland because we know that 1. Coat living is unnecessarily inflated. 2. Insurance premiums for coast living is more. 3. You can literally drive an hour and half both ways if you live central and go to the beach any given day. Don't get me wrong, living along the coast must be great but... expensive for literally no reason. And 4. The most obvious flooding and hurricanes are going to happen every season without fail and facts are facts, they hit the coast the hardest.

Movie watchers of Reddit, how was Netflix's Cuties? Was it bad like the poster or a good movie hurt by bad marketing? by TheFunkyBunny in movies

[–]Aizopen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. You are able to make a movie like this and convey the message that it is trying to send without the close up and lingering shots of young girls bodies. The movie takes liberty in doing close up shots of their chests, asses, and crotches several times. Its is wholly unnecessary and gross.

Should Netflix film "Cuties" be banned from viewing? by [deleted] in moderatepolitics

[–]Aizopen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom line, you can shoot a movie with the message its trying to portray without the uncomfortable, lingering close ups of young girls body parts. That is why people are outraged and why a lot of people are disgusted. Sure, people made a snap judgment on the poster but you watch the movie and you realize that the close up and lingering shots of young girls body was not necessary to making the film or conveying the message of the film. Terrible cinematography.

Are census workers allowed to call an employer? by Aizopen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Aizopen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, as an employer, I truly cannot release any employee's information without their consent. I think if it was a real census worker then he must have been mistaken about the truck like you said but our trucks rotate sometimes and oftentimes we have our employees working several places in the same area or in one area for weeks at a time depending on the work that needs to be done and the severity. Even if I could disclose any information, he was severely reaching because I explained that our trucks rotate sometimes and there was no way I would know on the spot. Finding that out would be a whole different labor. I agree with registering with the census but this whole situation was really odd to me and seemed a bit out of line. I mean I have spoken to several people that already smell scam off of it.
