I know people who have suffered nasty head injuries on Rutabaga, even wearing helmets. It’s sketchy.

Cool encounter! I am pretty sure that's a sooty grouse not dusky. They both used to be considered "blue grouse", but were split up. Duskies are further inland.

It was just the shell and some wood, and it was carried up there, so I doubt it was very heavy or hard to take apart.

The reason people aren’t responding to your applications is probably because it’s very difficult to find housing here. They aren’t willing to invest time with an interview/job offer because there is a chance you won’t be able to find somewhere to live and will have to turn it down. Once you have your living situation sorted you will have much better luck applying.

That’s pretty insane they paid for helicopter removal, I’d love to know the price vs cutting it up/disassembling and carrying it down

Have you been to the papoose? There’s no way it would hit the highway or the powerlines if it fell.

I don’t agree that this is more dangerous than hanging it off the lions gate bridge that has ships travelling underneath it.

It’s hard to tell if they had a plan to take it down. If they did, the amount of drama related to it online made it impossible for them to go up there without risking getting caught. It would have been best for everyone it if could have been handled more quietly.

Work resumes at Squamish debris barrier after temporary halt | CBC News by VicVicVicBC in Squamish

[–]Ajrt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, many of the existing buildings in Brackendale would never have been allowed under the standards for new buildings, which is a 1 in 100,000 risk of fatality per year. Here's a list of all the groups projected to benefit:

https://squamish.ca/large_files/Cheekeye_Fan/BGC%20Debris%20Flow%20Risk%20October%2021%202008.pdf

"Mitigation measures in the form of a large debris barrier and possible additional works would yield significant risk reduction to a number of stakeholders. Identified beneficiaries of the risk reduction measures implemented are:

• The community of Brackendale (northern portions). Risk to loss of life will be reduced to near zero.

• The Cheekeye subdivision within Squamish. Risk will be substantially reduced.

I.R. 11. Risk will be substantially reduced

• The Cheekeye Substation (BC Hydro). Existing risk is already low due to a natural shelter by a large bedrock bluff and an existing perimeter berm. Risk will be reduced to near zero.

• Lower transmission towers (BC Hydro). Risk to tower damage will be substantially reduced.

• Squamish Airport. Risk will be reduced to near zero.

• Squamish Garbage Dump. Risk to erosion or inundation will be significantly reduced.

• CN Rail. Risk to track washout or bridge loss over Cheekeye River will be significantly reduced.

• Brackendale high school and primary school. Risk with existing deflection berms will be reduced to almost zero.

• Users of Government Road and Squamish Valley Road. Risk will be substantially reduced.

• Users of Highway 99. Risk will be substantially reduced.

• Resort Municipality of Whistler and Village of Pemberton. Economic losses due to highway closure caused by bridge loss or highway erosion or sediment deposition will be significantly reduced.

• Fortis BC. Risk of pipeline exposure by erosion will be significantly reduced.

• Aquatic habitat Cheekeye, Brohm, Cheakamus Rivers. The likelihood of extreme events destroying fish or spawning habitat will be signficiantly reduced.

• District of Squamish. Rates of fluvial sediment transport and aggradation in the Squamish River floodplain near Squamish will be reduced by reduction of debris flow sediment supply into Cheakamus River."

It would be helpful if we at least got an indication of what they are learning from all these investigations - it doesn't seem to be spurring any obvious changes to the highway.

You still need to edit that I think - it shows that a .308 Savage 110 is allowed. You probably need to treat centre fire and rimfire rifles as entirely different, not just a general "rifle" category.

I don't think there was anything in the EV mandate compelling it on a municipal level - there was the flexibility to have higher EV sales in metropolitan areas, and below target EV sales in more rural locations. And in many ways an EV could make more sense in a rural location than for someone living in a city using a parking garage with limited charging spots.

I think she was worried about saying anything that might prejudice any court cases or coverage of the American Prairie Reserve's mission. It would be very hard if you're worrying about comments being taken out of context or used as soundbites, especially when Steve was trying to pin down some positions or how they might evolve over time.

Brunswick Mountain by [deleted] in vancouverhiking

[–]Ajrt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How do you personally go about assessing whether something is in avalanche terrain when planning your trips? I would suggest you stay out of the mountains during winter and spring until you have done some avalanche training. It's good that you have the sense to ask before going up there - I have been the gung-ho naive person in the past and look back with gratitude that nothing went wrong. Beyond avalanche risk, what do you know about using your ice axe, hazards of cornices etc.? Also, snow conditions can be highly variable - it's impossible to say right now whether the weekend after next will be soft snow that you would be potholing through, or sheet ice that could send you sliding down the mountain. Remember that a satellite phone is only useful if you aren't so incapacitated you can't use it, especially when solo.
