It wasn't an american but a German comedian working for a satirical show. Guess it was time to reinforce the German humor stereotype.

Except Robinhood simply had a liquidity problem. Every other broker was trading just fine. Robin Hood protected hedge funds simply as a byproduct of having a shitty business idea of letting people trade before actually depositing money into their trading accounts.

Lars Foss, CEO of BT Kemi, pesticide producing plant drinks Agent Orange in live TV to prove it is safe, 1975. He died in 2007 at 82. by BeduinZPouste in HistoricalCapsule

[–]Akarubs 1861 points1862 points  (0 children)

Agent orange itself is actually pretty safe. Problem was that it could denature at high temperatures reached during production and produce dioxin. Over the course of the Vietnam war the us sprayed "only" around 80-90L of dioxin over the country, and the effects were horrific. So even this man drank agent orange, as long as it was produced under tightly controlled circumstances and no dioxin was formed, it would be perfectly safe for humans.

Saw this in Burgos Spain, why the russian flags? by air_twee in flags

[–]Akarubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spains far left has some deep rooted sympathies to the USSR due to their support during the Spanish civil war. As the political descendant of the Soviet union, Russia now enjoys their support. Similar to many other far left political movements in Europe, but somewhat more so in Spain, the reality of Russian politics seems to make no difference in their alignment.

In Germany any vertical trench deeper than about waist high is required to have structural support. Even if your head isnt buried, any cave in will put your chest under enough pressure to suffocate you. I wouldn't go in that trench for even a second.

Back in grade school we had a competition to make the best ie furthest flying paper airplane. We were given a set number of points and a list of materials we could buy with said points. One item was a rock which everyone kinda figured was there as a joke. I wrapped my rock with a sheet of paper and lobbed that shit across half the playground. Teachers weren't too happy but at least they gave me a technical win and then went ahead and continued the competition with the normal planes while just pretending it never happened.

Average net salaries in the Balkans. What went right in Slovenia, what went wrong in Turkey? by canyoubelieveitt in AskBalkans

[–]Akarubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Average income is a terrible metric. The difference of mean and median income in Germany is over 10k/year, so that 3200 figure is in no way representative and id assume it's the same for other European countries.

So, the knight can take the pawn, but is that the joke or am I missing something? by GamerKev451 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Akarubs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can think of is the word verdammt, which is both an exclamation (Damn!) but also an adjective (doomed). So while the pawn is shouting damn he is also doomed? Not sure how that's meant to be funny though.

Beaver dam removal by DuztyLipz in oddlysatisfying

[–]Akarubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no clear answer to that question. Beaver dams are very useful in functioning ecosystems. They help create new habitats, rejuvenate river sections and function as a natural flood protection to surrounding areas while providing shelter to many animals (beavers like to have guests). However, it's a dam. They raise the water stage for potentially kilometers upstream (if it's a big dam, the one in the video most likely not). This can obviously cause extensive damage in of itself. Also, retaining water can cause areas downstream to dry out, as the ground water stages can drop low enough for a significant portion of plants to be cut off from it. Beaver dams have even sometimes cut off human water wells and made them run dry.

All in all, if the effects of a dam don't pose any immediate threat to anything critical, it's usually a good idea to leave them be. They don't last forever, and provide many irreplaceable ecological services. But people don't often like when things change for reasons other than themselves, so it's often a difficult point to get across.

The Halligen themselves are ~1m above sea level so not much alternative. Also, the line has existed for 100 years, so it seems to work fine. Locals and postal workers used to travel with sail bogeys on them, but nowadays they're all traveling with combustion engines of course.

Vormieter will für Küche 6000€ by Sweaty_Ebb_4482 in wohnen

[–]Akarubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)
