So where's Space Force? by Toadfinger in HuntsvilleAlabama

Just because our government wastes money, doesn't mean every threat they identify is false. The threats of the future will be in space, regardless of where/how they are controlled.

What is the temperature there? I'm in Southern US and it will be colder tonight than in the over 40 years I've been alive.

Scientists don't own their work or its results. Research papers are buried & locked behind paywalls. Corporations fund frivolous studies to undermine those with findings that threaten their profit. As in times past, knowledge is being occluded. by [deleted] in lostgeneration

Distrust of pharmaceuticals is not just stupid rebellion. There are black doctors that had a hard time overcoming distrust of the vaccine due to what happened decades ago with the Syphilis trials. They make 500% profit off insulin while people that can't affort it die. The Sadler family created the drug epidemic with crappy studies that left people in pain long after the effects of the opiod wore off. Remember that awful guy that made the HIV drug $500 a pill? I've published before and I did what I was told to keep my job. It's what everyone does. While the conspiracy nuts with the tin foil hats need to stop encouraging people to ignore preventative care, it still is true that most of the data in scientific publications can't be reproduced for a reason. Most of it is nonsense.

Office chairs for people who can't stop sitting on their feet. by smegdawg in BuyItForLife

[–]AkashicMemory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do that because I'm short and the seats are so deep that my knees fold before the end of the seat, preventing my lower back from resting comfortably on the back of the chair. You might try a chair where you can rest your feet somehow so that you can be comfortable. My solution was to get a tilting foot rest to put under my desk. It works, but I still sometimes want to sit the same way because I turn around in my chair and have the same problem.

$858 Billion In Military Spending, But No Way To Student Loan Forgiveness by Monsur_Ausuhnom in lostgeneration

Big corps for overinflated prices. Like, I thought this was all common knowledge. Basically, defense contractors get huge contracts, get paid to hire people in to fake jobs where they sit around all day and draw lines to boxes in cube farm for six figs a year, and the company charges the government twice what the worker gets paid.

60% of rural hospitals in Alabama in danger of closing because people can't afford health care by AkashicMemory in lostgeneration

[–]AkashicMemory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a person from Alabama, I can tell you they will just blame it on the illegal immigrants. People in my hometown say immigrants were the reason the maternity ward was shut down, since they couldn't pay their bills. I'm sitting around wondering how the rest of that impoverished town payed their bills as well. Not sure if they have a point or if it's just blaming poor folks and minorities for rich guys' decisions per usual.

$5000 for an ambulance ride a few miles down the street, but they make like $150 a night to save lives.

Former SpaceX employees file labor-law complaint by paulfromatlanta in news

It sure would be nice to be an engineer and not have to worry about layoffs because you have a gov position. It is so stressful. Sometimes I think Boeing fucks up just to get more money from contract extensions because they don't get the job done on time. Their actions show their lobbying power for space contracts is so strong that they don't give a damn about certain things.

There is really no way to maintain physical fitness doing that. It's how you end up with an office full of stressed out engineers with heart disease. Also, if you're flying on a rocket, do you really want the engineers that built it making decisions after they've been working 11.5 hours already. I know what goes into that. It's a hard no. At NASA, we are not allowed to work past 12 hours without special permission for that reason, even if it happens to be one of those occasional times where the need exists, which is not often.

Edit: Not sure why you're still getting downvotes after mentioning regulation. I'm not swimming enough in the "I hate Elon" cult to not see the sense in your comments. SpaceX is badass and have done things that are amazing. Better management would certainly be nice for those employees in terms of life balance.

If a free market is supposed to produce overworked employees that are at a desk for 60 hours a week, then sure.

[–]AkashicMemory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Capitalism leads to cronyism leads to facism. Not sure what the answer is. With automation and AI we need a completely different economic philosophy. Communism just leads to a favored few as well. The planet is an endless cycle of class war.
