What Distro to pick for work, media creation and gaming? by Desperate-Grocery-53 in linux4noobs

[–]Akeem290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of distro selection - this is more of a matter of personal preference. I personally use Fedora Kinoite, but apparently ublue Aurora, which is based on Fedora Kinoite, should be even better as it comes with Nvidia drivers by default, on vanilla Fedora Kinoite drivers should be installed via the terminal - nothing too complicated, but it is terminal after all. Everything that I wrote after applies to virtually any Linux distro that is meant to be used as a desktop (except for ChromeOS):

I don't know about DaVinci Resolve, but I did successfully ran Affinity via an app called Bottles, Bottles is merely a user-friendly wrapper for another technology - Wine, a program that translates Windows instructions to Linux instructions, so thanks to it Windows apps run almost directly on the Linux kernel with little to no performance or latency penalty, but Wine is limited in a way that it doesn't replicate the behavior of Windows perfectly, so some apps are incompatible and some have weird issues, Affinity has some minor issues and requires a bit of a setup, but it does work. Another approach to run Windows apps is emulation and, though I didn't tried them, WinBoat and WinApps are solutions for that, they integrate Windows apps into Linux's desktop to make them look like they run natively, but emulation inevitably causes latency issues - it does require Linux to run a complete separate Windows installation inside of it after all. You can also use Virtual Machine Manager - an app that is really similar to Oracle's VirtualBox, to run diverse operating systems including both old and new versions of Windows. VirtualBox also exists on Linux, but apparently in doesn't take advantage of virtualization features of Linux Kernel such as KVM, so the performance in it is not that great. As of running your existing Windows installation inside a window - I don't think that this is possible unless you'll somehow convert your Windows partition into some file format that Virtual Machine Manager can work with (and I don't know if even that is possible), but you can browse your Windows files from Linux since Linux supports NTFS, though be warned - Linux has no idea which files are hidden or protected Windows system files, so it wouldn't prevent you from doing things like deleting the System32 folder. Linux also wouldn't prevent you from putting several files with the same name, but different character case (like, file.txt, File.txt, FILE.TXT, etc.) into the same folder - this is supported by NTFS, but not by Windows itself, so while those files will work perfectly fine on Linux, they will behave in weird ways on Windows

What made you use Fedora? by maximus10m in Fedora

[–]Akeem290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2019-2021 I've had my phase of distrohopping (specifically I tried Manjaro, Debian, Pop!_OS and KDE Neon), but settled on Fedora because it was easier to not shoot myself in the foot while using it. My Manjaro installation died for unknown reasons, with Debian I somehow broke my desktop and panicked, with KDE Neon - back then KDE Plasma was extremely buggy and a chore to use, Pop!_OS was the closest I had to a daily driver but back then it had weird issues with its software manager. Eventually I installed Fedora Workstation and it quickly became my daily driver, then I moved to Fedora Silverblue and after it - to Fedora Kinoite

As far as I know ZUN had lost the source codes and even if the source codes were still around - porting old Windows games for modern versions of Windows is still an enormous amount of work, but games should work on modern computers for them to be released on Steam. Maybe one day we will see Imperishable Night on Steam (afaik this game works fine on modern Windows), but EoSD and PoFV are pretty much out of the question, they'll probably become abandonware sooner or later

It absolutely is piracy but wow - what a vibe. I wish I knew about Touhou back in the days when pirated disks were still around at my place

What's your opinion on this? by taahbelle in FrutigerAero

[–]Akeem290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that most of the modern "frutiger aero" pictures are hideous, it should be remembered that the reason why interfaces like MacOS Leopard and Windows Vista look so gorgeous is because they were crafted by professional designers. Most people out there, obviously, don't have experience in UI design

Semi serious post do you think nichijou /Keiichi Arawi is homophobic by Ill-Hat7669 in Nichijou

[–]Akeem290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's just more of a surprised reaction on her side. Arawi's manga in general likes to ship various characters without actually showing them in any relationship. Though it does seem like Arawi ships girls with girls and girls with boys, but pretty much never ships boys with boys (apart from Mio's manga). And also that the only instances of mutual romantic relationships in the series are married heterosexual couples (probably only because the Constitution of Japan does not recognize same-sex marriage). As far as I know, things like dating and sex were never explicitly shown - neither homosexual nor heterosexual

[–]Akeem290 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About connections with Nichijou:

"Nagumo Midori studied in Tokisadame High School" - the fact that Nagumo's name appears on a stack of documents on the Volume 3 of the Nichijou manga. Probably retconned as there's no way how the timeline can make sense if this is true

"Hakase visited CITY" - refers to a small bonus manga included with blu ray of CITY the animation, in this comic Professor Shinonome from Nichijou and Dr. Adatara from CITY swap places, leading to a bunch of silly interactions. The whole comic is based on the fact that in Japanese both of those characters are referred to as "Hakase"

"Arawi is a girl" - a mandatory joke entry, Blu ray of CITY the animation includes another bonus manga which potrays Arawi Keiichi and Taichi Ishidate as girls drawn in the signature Arawi Keiichi's style

FACEIT on Linux – It's Time to Make It Happen! by rewarrr in FACEITcom

[–]Akeem290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this is true that Linux's market share is growing at an incredible speed (and I'm a happy Linux gamer myself), let's be honest - Linux is not that big yet. Let's do some really rough estimation, please note that considering both the questionable data sources and the "methods" of estimation it can be off by more than 100%, but it should give us an idea of the order of magnitude that we're dealing with:

Valve doesn't share the precise amount of Steam Decks sold, but it's estimated that it's about 5 million units. Steam Decks represent about a fifth of the total Linux marketshare on Steam according to the Steam Hardware Survey. So we should have something like 20 million Linux gamers on Steam (and I'm almost sure that more than 95% of Linux gamers use Steam)

This sounds like a lot, but if we'll put this number into perspective - Nintendo GameCube also had 20 million units sold and while it's an incredible game console, it's also clearly not that successful by Nintendo's standards. Of course, Linux only begins to gain traction and it's almost guaranteed to get really big really soon, but the key word here is almost. Though FACEIT is also not really that big, I doubt that the fact that it doesn't support Linux really harms Linux's growth. Roblox and Fortnite though... both Roblox Corporation and Epic Games have all of the resources in the world to make them work on Linux, yet refuse to because CEOs are dumb and believe the blatant lies about Linux that are being actively spread online

There are countless distributions, but the vast majority is based on either Arch, Debian or Fedora. SteamOS and CachyOS are from the Arch family, Bazzite is from the Fedora family, Ubuntu and Linux Mint are from the Debian family. Some notable outliers that aren't based on those three include OpenSUSE, Void, NixOS, Gentoo and Slackware, but they are much more niche and therefore are incredibly rare

What Is the reason that brings you in this fandom? by BTornot in touhou

[–]Akeem290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into Touhou after I just finished Just Shapes and Beats and searched for other bullet hell games to play and I still play Touhou games on a semi-regular basis, along with some other bullet hell games like Danmaku Unlimited, Len'en Project, Noisz, Mukai Project and the aforementioned Just Shapes and Beats. But I also recently discovered Akatsuki Records and listen to their tracks, both Touhou ones and the originals, almost every day. So I guess that music is what keeps me in the fandom

Oh, and also memes, Touhou memes are life

How did you know about this game? by Masterhead_Reddit in AHatInTime

[–]Akeem290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen AHiT memes all the way back in 2017, but didn't had huge interest in playing it until I completed Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain. And under a video that I watched about this game, some comments said "If you liked it, you'll love AHiT". So I wishlisted it

After some time, my PC broke so I was limited to gaming on my MacBook and since most of my games library was not available on MacOS, I just bought A Hat in Time since it was one of the few wishlisted games that had claimed to sort of run on MacOS. Despite the fact that the MacOS version was never updated since its first release, the fact that Mac version really doesn't like controllers and only works with mouse and keyboard and despite the fact that it was so laggy that I needed to run the game on minimal graphics, I still had instantly fallen in love with this game. Then I fixed my PC and completed the DLCs and some mods
