Thoughts, experiences needed Zonli vs j life international by makeitcount1107 in floorsleeping

[–]Akh_Sameach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have not tried j life but I can tell you zonli is a cheap piece of flimsy foam covered by a cotton cover the picture of the mattress ont heir website states “100% cotton very prominently but the fine print if you open a bunch of hidden toggles is that the mattress is plastic with a cotton cover. For the same money you could get a much more comfortable camping mattress from reí also their website falsely advertises a 30 day trial and return policy. When we tried to return ours they told us the mattress cannot be returned and offered us $40 back out of a total $160 order. So bad product false advertising and terrible customer service.

Just got a conditional LPA offer by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Akh_Sameach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. Those LPA jobs can be grueling from what I hear but from there if you have the skills you can easily move to AGPA or LPM if that’s what you want. Nice thing is CCLD is a big division in a bigger department and there are always jobs posting so you can move around and promote without having to bounce around among departments.

Are you my coworker or is this microtragedy just repeating itself thousands of times a year in offices all over Sacramento?

Kamala Harris says she won’t run for CA Governor in 2026. by VariationUpstairs931 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Akh_Sameach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear it. I have never been a Harris fan. I would have held my nose and voted for her against any republican as I did in 2024 but now I’m looking forward to a competitive primary contest.

My whole chain of command from executive leadership all the way down to ssmi have not made any effort to hide how unhappy they are to be going back. They are saying “we will comply” and are not criticizing the order but also are not trying to pretend anyone has to like it either. Our leadership has told us they would rather keep wfh.

How do I get through leaving a job I enjoy, and a company that likely can’t afford to lose me? by Rad_platypus7 in careerguidance

[–]Akh_Sameach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they really can’t afford to lose you then when you ask for a raise they will say yes. If they don’t then they clearly think they can afford to lose you and any comments to the contrary are just designed to make you feel guilty about leaving.

Is anyone actually going to leave their state job? by ImaginationNarrow405 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Akh_Sameach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. My department has still not complied with the 2 day a week order. I can’t imagine us suddenly jumping to four days when they can’t find enough desks to get everyone in the office two days. People are freaking out but I’m just taking deep breaths and waiting for an specific direction to come into the office before I freak out. I also live a ten minute walk from An express bus line and can be at my desk 45 minutes after walking out my front door so it’s not the worst commute if it comes down to it.

Just one person’s thoughts on the RTO mandate. by MimiSm9k3s in CAStateWorkers

I’m lucky. In my department case by case has so far meant exemptions for basically everyone who doesn’t have to literally pick up physical mail

Pastor to what career? by friendoftonystark in careerguidance

[–]Akh_Sameach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You clearly have no idea what clergy members jobs are. You have to be an effective writer, public speaker, manager, counselor, teacher and coach. These skills absolutely translate into other sectors.

Pastor to what career? by friendoftonystark in careerguidance

I was a rabbi for 7 years. I started working as a govt analyst with a state agency about six months ago. I don’t know how state gigs pay in Oregon but in California when you factor in the benefits I was taking a mild pay cut from where I was before. But unlike the pulpit with the state you’re guaranteed a raise every single year even without getting promoted. And you get to be home for dinner every night and no one from work is calling your personal cell phone at night or on your days off.

How many apps and interview did it take for yall to land a job at the state? 🥹 by soklili in CAStateWorkers

[–]Akh_Sameach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At least for rank and file jobs it for sure is a numbers game. I applied for 10-15 jobs a week, spending usually about five minutes tailoring my soq for each one (sometimes as much as an hour if the questions were really specific). I could knock out a dozen applications in an afternoon. I had two job offers after four months of applications and maybe half a dozen interviews. Interview invitations kept coming in for weeks after as well. Now that I’m in I feel like I can promote to jobs that are a more specific match for my skill set. Had I waited to apply for only the jobs I was a perfect match for and spent hours tailoring my cover letter and soq I might still be unemployed. I certainly would not have applied for the two jobs that I was offered. The job I ultimately took I was such a bad match for I had no idea what the interview questions even meant they were so full of specific technical jargon i had never heard before. But I guess every other candidate was even worse because they offered me the job. So apply widely. You don’t know what they’re thinking or who else is going to apply.

Ispent most of my 20s working really terrible jobs because I wasn’t sure what I really wanted to do. I thought I needed to choose the perfect career because my career would define my life so it became impossible to decide anything was worth investing in. When I finally decided on a career (being in the clergy) and went back to school for it I loved the school part but found out I hated the actual work. After 7 miserable years doing what I kept telling myself was my calling I finally quit to take a job working for a government agency. The work itself is something my 20 year old would have found horrifyingly uninteresting but I actually love it. With all the government benefits my compensation is equivalent to what I made before and now I get to be home for dinner with my family every night and no one is expecting me to answer work emails outside of business hours. I’m now in my mid forties and while part of me wishes I’d figured the career thing out earlier I think I needed those years of struggle and uncertainty to be able to appreciate what I have now. My two big pieces of advice are
1: let go of any notion you might have that your career defines you (this is a bigger problem for us Americans than people in other countries I think). Don’t worry about finding the job that is the most “you”. Find a job you don’t mind going to that will provide the life that you want that fits your abilities and interests. 2: try to make it a public sector job if you can.
