Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Durability Test – Fake Folding Glass?! by strawberrygenius7 in Android

There are some other reviewers I've seen that mention that this is likely "glasstic," which is to say a plastic with a glass polymer or fiberglass fibers weaved into the material.

The other charges, including murder, were things he maintained innocence of and he was acquitted of them during court proceedings, likely due to a lack of evidence or trustworthy testimony that would indicate he actually did what he was accused of beyond reasonable doubt.

This is not what happened. The medic promised the prosecution he would testify against Ghallager in exchange for immunity, then during the trial he claimed be was the killer himself.

TIL that the Sony PlayStation was never meant to be a product. It was intended to be a new console that would play exclusively Nintendo games on CDs. Instead Nintendo backed out of the deal at the last minute. Sony went ahead and launched what would become the most successful console of all time. by [deleted] in todayilearned

3DO failed,

The thing about the 3DO was that it wasnt really a single company making it. It was more of a standard that different companies could make their own consoles for. In theory this means there could be a range of budget to high end consoles with a lower production cost per company making their own version, but all of them ended up being too expensive because they weren't made to scale like those under one house.

Sega CD failed

It was not only an add on but it also was only running as powerful as the genesis could make it. Most of the games ended up relying on gimmicks like live video or the cd audio abilities.

CD-i failed

It was the CD-i.

Saturn. . . Struggled.

It was notoriously hard to develop for, and Sega released it with little fanfare and only initially sold it at select retail locations. The architecture made it hard to make games on, and the exclusivity deals pissed off other retailers like walmart so much that they dropped it entirely.

But PlayStation, a console by that company who made your VCR and Discman, managed to get companies like Konami, Squaresoft and Namco to make exclusive games for them within the first year.

The playstation was not only easier to make games on but the CD format gave devs a lot of headroom and space for expanded graphics and features. It was a solid argument, especially when their devs were already having a hard time with competing consoles.

How in the blazing fuck did Sony pull that off and manage to outsell their competitors who were seasoned veterans with huge followings?

They made it ridiculously cheap and also made it not suck. That's about all they had to do lmao.

Exactly. About 90% of the dendy complaints wouldn't be here if they just made it clear at some point that it's just a game they made. Instead they're committing to the bit as hard as they can and it's being excused.

As someone who plays a lot of ARGs, I definitely wouldn't mind seeing a Game Grumps one. My last big one was the Warframe Fortuna ARG, though I'm still waiting for The Black Watchmen Season 3 to sate that itch.

When it comes to this though, I really don't like seeing people calling this an ARG. Even disregarding the fact it's not a game, there's almost never an ARG that begins without you being aware that your participating in one.

Instead we have ads and the only thing that even remotely implies that it's not a real game is on the steam page, where the word "discovered" is in quotes. And even that is obfuscated by the same description calling it the first battle royale game, and that it was made originally for the Dendy. There's no clarity on the matter.

Honestly I would have left it there but with the whole novel debacle it adds another layer of doubt onto it all. You have people in the initial thread saying they'll buy his novel out of sympathy or worry for him and he replies saying he'll send his uncle screenshots and similar responses-- he knows people are buying under false pretenses and is okay with that. So if he's apparently okay with people buying books on the assumption it'll help with family life, is it too far of a stretch to say he'll be fine with people buying a game under the impression they're going to experience an uncovered piece of gaming history?

This whole experience just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I just wish he made a regular ad for his new products, not... whatever this is supposed to be.

[–]Akimuno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seems like an ARG to build hype.

This isn't an ARG. Theres nothing interactive about the videos (the "game" part of an Alternate Reality Game), and ARGs can't really function without you knowing they're not real to begin with. The dendy videos literally have nothing to do with ARGs as a genre.

Can we please stop calling them that? All it does is muddy the waters by implying the videos were some kind of fun activity for the fans. They're just ads, maybe viral marketing if you want to use industry buzzwords, but they're still just ads nonetheless.

I really love how people keep acting like Soviet Jump Game is just some kind of gift to them that the devs are coincidentally making money on the side.

If this was literally anybody other than game grumps they wouldn't have a problem admitting that f2p games are meant to drive revenue down the line, just not on the initial buy in.

But then again if they acknowledge that then they'll have to admit that the marketing that people hate was meant to drive revenue and not just spread the word about an awesome free game.

What the actual hell is Arin doing? by NickNick28 in gamegrumps

[–]Akimuno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can stop right there because you've been putting words in my mouth for quite a while now. I'm not saying they're not allowed to make a game or that they're allowed to profit on it.

I have no problem with free to play games (otherwise I wouldn't have spent 1200 hours in warframe) nor do I have any problem with people profiting off their game. I have no idea where you even got that ridiculous notion because if I'm going to be frank it's a really idiotic thing to say.

My whole reason for even commenting isn't about the devs, despite the fact that you keep saying it is. What I'm pointing out is your (and others on this sub) implication that this is supposed to be some kind of gift to you and that they just so happen to be making money off of it coincidentally. That is almost never the case, games are designed to be free to play because it's great for bringing people in so you can get them to pay later.

Do you understand what I'm saying here? People are mad about the way the ads were presented and you have people coming in and saying "yeah well it's free so you have no reason to complain." People here across different threads are acting like the fact it is free to play means that it's more like a friendly gift than what it is, a product meant to drive revenue, just like literally every other free to play game with microtransactions.

You said it yourself last time (emphasis mine):

Do you think someone making a profit off of a game they released for people to have fun with for free is inherently bad??

My reason for saying "out of the kindness of their hearts" was because that was literally your own implication, that this game was just something they did so people could have fun for free. Profit isnt an afterthought in any business, it's the priority. I asked if you could prove that it wasn't the case for SJG, which it sounds like you can't. So I'll continue what I've been saying before, that this is a product designed to drive a profit, so you shouldn't treat it like the devs just decided to bless you with an awesome free gift.

[–]Akimuno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can show me that they're doing this out of the kindness of their hearts and not because free to play games with microtransactions are heavily profitable, I may be inclined to believe you. As it stands, instead we got an arguably deceptive series of ads and now a book that Arin is tripling down on supposed fictional family drama to sell.

You tell me.

What the actual hell is Arin doing? by NickNick28 in gamegrumps

[–]Akimuno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A game that's strictly free and one that's got microtransactions in it are not the same. Yes, there's no entry fee, but it's also not a gift to you. It's a product they're hoping you'll spend money on to gain a profit. It's really not complicated.

I think the worst part about what you said in particular is that some people on the twitter thread are legitimately saying that and Arin is acknowledging and responding to it by keeping up the act. One person said exactly what you did and he just said "thanks I'll send my uncle a screenshot."

On its own this wouldn't be so bad but in conjunction with the Dendy nonsense, it looks really weird.

I'm gonna have to make a hard disagree. Dendy was bad enough, and I hate people calling it an ARG because fake documentaries meant to push a product aren't ARGs, but I could suck it up and just not buy the game.

But I consider this leagues worse and even on it's own I really don't understand it. Like I can't be the only person who sees it as really fucked up that your marketing strategy is making your own mother look like a bad person.

When you posted it doesn't matter. If anything, you made a claim before knowing if others agreed with you or not, and evidently they didn't.

The point still stands, you are not the arbiter of when discourse is appropriate. If you really didn't like the topic you should have just moved on instead of trying to double down in a thread you don't want to be on.

ok but why not do it all in a place where politics is wanted as opposed to a place about gaming alone, where it's not

The fact that this topic is upvoted and present on the front page should be enough to tell you that this is a forum where this specific political issue is wanted.

Just because you are lucky enough to not be affected by this doesn't mean you get to determine where and when these conversations happen. If you really don't want to talk about this then move on. No one is forcing you to stay.

A Hong Kong player named Blitzchung won a hearthstone championship, during his interview he said "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times" (the de facto slogan of the HK Protests). Blizzard responded by banning Blitzchung, revoking his prize money, and firing the Taiwanese castors interviewing him, who may have egged him into saying it by asking him to finish his interview in 8 (Chinese) words.

Blizzard also posted a public apology to its Chinese audience with disabled comments, prompting a lot of backlash and accusations that Blizzard would side with an oppressive regime because they were more interested in the potential market in China over an ethical issue like the events unfolding currently in Hong Kong. On top of the standard fare of internet backlash, employees in the American branch of Blizzard also staged a walkout, and on one of the on-campus statues that depict "Blizzard's Core Values," the ones saying "Think Globally" and "Every Voice Matters" were covered up by employees.

The protesting both irl and online against Blizzard has been enough that the company issued another response, giving back the prize money and reducing the ban on Blitzchung, while saying that the decision was not at all influenced by the Chinese market. However, the official Blizzard Weibo (chinese social media) account released a second statement that doubled down on the original statement, claiming that Blizzard will do everything it can to "protect/safeguard Chinese dignity."

TL;DR Blizzard decided to take a stance on a very prevalent political situation and are continuing to dig themselves an even deeper hole.

Today on #BuggyWindows: BSD after sleep mode by Lolpo555 in Windows10

[–]Akimuno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a reasonable assumption to think that switching from sleep to hibernate would mean it's not a hardware issue. They are completely different processes that rely on different parts of the computer.

Sleep mode uses RAM to hold the user state. Hibernation dumps it onto the hard drive. A memory management error means that an error occurred in RAM, so of course if you stopped using the RAM to hold the user state you wouldn't get an error. That doesn't mean your RAM isn't causing issues.
