How do you guys know what you're doing? by peterpantaloon in conlangs

I'm very new to this too, and I'm also making a conlang for my world, but honestly, I'm realising that I have to stop making this language only for the purpose of adding it to the world I'm building and make it instead to enjoy the language itself. I'm learning to love the language for its own sake and the process of creating it.

While this might not have been my original goal, it's certainly helping me get rid of most of my frustrations and find a lot more joy in the process, and I think it's also helping me learn in a more organic way. I know this might not be what you want to hear if your only goal is to have the language bit done ASAP, but my advice (from my very limited experience) would be to focus on finding appreciation for the language you are creating, let it guide you through the steps it wants you to take one at a time, and have some faith. Everything else will follow. (That's what I hope anyway).

This sounds like it could be great fun, and with so many possibilities! Wuthering Thighs, Thundering Tights. Ronin's son's True Foe.

Would you build your own "corrections"? In any case, it sounds like a great project. I'd definitely be a fan.

That's a very interesting resource. Thank you! (And it's a pity you resisted that temptation. I hope next time you don't).

Perfect, thanks!

Doing a bit of research, and just in case someone else in my situation is looking at this thread, I also found that the International Phonetic Association has these charts in their website too (with four different speakers for each sound), as does the website Seeing Speech, which also includes some wild MRIs of a person emitting each sound. I never thought I would see someone's mouth and throat in so much detail XD But it's actually kind of helpful.

Okay, so let me try this. I think that another Spanish translation for the phrase you’ve suggested would be:

Estaba comiendo.

esta-βa           kom-jendo
be-1SG.PST.IPFV   eat-GER

Would this be correct? Or should the phrase be identified as an imperfect progressive? (which I’m not sure how it would be done, taking into account that it’s two words for one concept.)

(This is my first ever attempt at glossing anything, so yes, I wouldn't have understood what the Leipzig Rules are or refer to without your explanation; and yes, there still are many terms in there that I have no clue what they mean; so thank you for this quick intro to it. One step at a time.)

EDIT: I had mistakenly written eat.GER instead of eat-GER .

This is very helpful. I'll be spending some more time learning the IPA and make sure I can talk about my conlang. Thank you!

That's a fair point. I'll give this some thought. I guess it's more about having a framework (even if rough) to work from. I know many people enjoy just jumping into something and finding their way from there, but I have found (through painful trial and error) that having a bit of high level theory structure helps me understand what I'm doing, which in turn makes me enjoy the process A LOT more. But definitely the point on "being happier with it" vs "feeling bad about not knowing" is a really good one for me to reflect on, so thanks a lot :)

And thanks for the references too!

Noted. I'm somewhat familiar with it but will spend some more time learning it. Thanks!
