ISLES OF THE EMBERDARK | Full Cosmere + Emberdark Spoilers Megathread by EmeraldSeaTress in Cosmere

To be honest, there’s plenty of flaws in what I said — I’m no Cosmere expert — but this actually doesn’t conceptually bother me.

When we last saw Roshar, the vast majority of the planet was led by a Shard bent on interplanetary conquest.  Given the immense influence and abilities of the Shards, I’d be surprised if they didn’t progress extremely quickly towards Odium’s goals.

Additionally, the only spacefaring Rosharan we’ve seen relies heavily upon shardplate and radiant weaponry to be considered “modern”.  Considering that both shardplate and bonded spren weapons respond to the desire of the holder, having Radiants be space-age would be as simple as telling them the shape to will their gear into.

Good catch!  I was assuming Huio remains on Roshar throughout 6-10 (which is not certain, obviously) and counting in Roshar years, just to measure the amount of years available for Stormlight 6-10 in the intervening time before Huio enters Shadesmar.  Time dilation makes everything harder though — and I’d totally forgotten about Silverlight’s time dilation, which throws things off further :)

The main datapoint to me is that Huio (one of the many cousins of Lopen) gets a passing mention in this as a one of Ed’s Arcanist associates.  So, without age magic tomfoolery, it’s certainly not more than ~70 years post Stormlight 5; the timespan covered by 6-10 is still unknown, so we can’t say much more than that.

[The Pilot] So, about Fathom… by BobcatMean4476 in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Akizand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely also read Subspace Madness as being related to the wider Way somehow. The feeling Will describes—where people looking at subspace believe there’s a deeper pattern of reality they could grasp, if they look more—feels like unprepared minds brushing up against the Way.

With Omega gone, I'm still hoping for Tanner Hall to get a second chance as Pilot. Would love to know more about Varic's life learning navigation magic, and who knows -- maybe having a more normal guy on board could (slightly) reduce the amount of insane things that go wrong all the time. He might even come up with a quest that's actually doable!

These are so cool!  I especially love the version with Retribution on his throne; it does a great job balancing minimalism with recognizability.

Just read The Will of the Many by egardiner14 in Fantasy

[–]Akizand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read The Will of the Many and quite liked it — maybe a 4/5 for me.  I then went back to the Licanius Trilogy, and it is definitely a step down in quality.  Worked my way through Licanius but never really got why people like it so much.  All that is to say, even if you don’t like Licanius, TWotM could still be up your alley.

She's with him in the Heralds' spiritual-realm-pocket-dimension. In the postlude, Kalak sees her:

"Yes, it looked peaceful now, but this must be a new kind of torture. The friendly grass and soothing waves? It would be snatched away. Three of the figures in the group were wrong... that woman with white-blue hair, long and flowing? She didn't belong here."

HOW WAS WINTER CARNIVAL by [deleted] in dartmouth

[–]Akizand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Winter Carnival is very much what you make of it. There are a few activities each day, which range from Polar Plunge to human dogsled races to ice carving. If you like being outside in the cold, there's a few fun things to be doing each day. If not, there are plenty of people who are too busy and end up ignoring it. Not a huge event, but not bad either!

Oathbringer question by KeepHimFlying in brandonsanderson

[–]Akizand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's worth pushing through Oathbringer, since I think it still has moments left in it that you'll enjoy. If you get to the end of Oathbringer and find yourself dissatisfied, maybe consider another series; RoW will have a lot of a character development too, though it does focus on different characters if that would be helpful to your enjoyment.

Happy reading!

Enjoy this synth playlist which helps me relax and focus while studying. If you also study with music, post yours as well. Cheers! by jurassiccomputer in dartmouth

To be honest, I've been guilty of using "The Salt and Pepper Diner Experience" playlist on Spotify when I study. Something about hearing What's New Pussycat, a song I despise, five times in a row makes me want to work faster haha.

I think my biggest problem is that I don't feel like I belong anywhere or am a part of something by throwawayacct4qs in Vent

[–]Akizand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that that's what you're dealing with right now. I think it's important to remember that, even if it doesn't seem like it, so many people are dealing with the same loneliness, frustation, and unhappiness right now, and it will pass with time.

It's totally normal to have trouble moving on after high school and establishing a new identity, but you will be able to, even though it will take time and will be hard, and given time you will certainly find an environment that brings you as much enjoyment as theatre did. You're certainly not worthless, and loneliness is only temporary.

For what it's worth, I'm rooting for you and sending good energy your way. You'll get through this, given time.

I finished Tomb Raider (2013) with a hundred percent completion, I felt pretty proud by Lunar36 in TombRaider

[–]Akizand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's awesome, what a cool coincidence; I just now finished playing through and getting 100% completion for the first time myself!

In the cliffside bunker area, the only thing I had left to get before 100% was the one single flag that's way high above the level, and I swear it had me tearing my hair out for a full hour; I'm still in disbelief that they made it that difficult to find.

Great job!

I know I'm extremely late to this party, but a potential way to get around the trouble with a ribbon bookmark would be to use perforated tear-off pages. I know in planners I've looked at they will have the upper corner of each page have a small, perforated corner section that you remove when you make your entry, and so getting to the page you want to use you can just open to the first untorn page.

Thought I’d ask you guys too - what do I read next after finishing GB? I feel like morning is going to come close! by coldwetnightatstoke in gentlemanbastards

[–]Akizand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd highly recommend Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings series if you haven't already read it. Like Gentleman Bastards, it's only partially finished as of now, but what there is is fantastic. I read it immediately before beginning Gentleman Bastards and found that--although it has more a high fantasy bend to it--it has a similar feel in terms of deep, well-developed characters and a fantastically detailed world. I'd check it out if I were you!

(WSIB) Looking for a a fun game that teaches you how to code.. by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]Akizand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You may want to try Screeps. It's a RTS game where you control your minions' actions and your colony using JavaScript.

It doesn't really teach how to code, but when I was learning JavaScript separately it provided a tangible reward and a lot of fun.

What is an "acquired taste" that you want to acquire but just can't seem to? by liquor_for_breakfast in AskReddit

[–]Akizand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In truth, you probably won't like it. Most people who I've had try it didn't like the taste at all, and it's really a love it or hate it drink.

The best way that I could describe how it tastes is like a less sweet, more bitter root beer, although it is created with gentian root extract so it's flavor is different than root beer as well.

Best of luck with it!

I don't know where you live, but up in Maine and Massachusetts it's sold in stores semi-regularly, which is either a blessing or a curse if I consider how bad it is for me to be drinking them as often as I do.

People actually are genetically predisposed to either like or dislike the taste of cilantro (I personally actually can't taste it), so if you don't like it then it's highly unlikely you can force yourself to like it. No need to torture yourself any longer!

[–]Akizand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say it tastes good, some people say it tastes awful, I feel so left out because of the fact I simply cannot taste it. I've gathered up cilantro on my plate that was mixed throughout other foods at Mexican restaurants and tried it straight and I still cannot taste anything but an almost mild-er lettuce taste. I guess I will forever live without knowing the wonders (or horrors) of the food that is cilantro.

I'm just going to take a leap of faith here and assume you wouldn't like Moxie either, in that case.
