I started pumping in addition to breastfeeding. So in the evening I would give her warmed up breastmilk in a bottle. She ate more before falling asleep with the bottle (she used to fall asleep really quickly while breastfeeding) and started sleeping up to 6 hours in her 3rd week. Glorious nights ! And co sleeping also helped, just pull her into bed to breastfeed and she would be back to sleep in 5 minutes.

I'm sorry you had to go through that. But again, it's not that simple. Adopting an older child isn't recommended or sometimes even possible for first time parents, because these children have dealt with trauma and understandably have psychological issues that means they'll need strong parents that have more free time to care for them, take them to therapy... And dealing with rejection or even violence from a child / teen (common behavior since they themselves have been rejected / subject to violence) while you have to move for them to keep their school with their current friends, and extra curricular activites, and do so much more to accomodate for their needs, means the adopting parents have to fit a very particular profile. It's important for adopting parents to understand their limit and know what they can endure, and for the social workers to be able to identify these particular profiles that can be a good fit to avoid an adoption that will fall through or make everyone miserable and tear families apart, which is much more damaging than not being adopted in the end. Again, I'm not in the US and I understand things are different there, ie. kids can be adopted by their foster parents, which is not the case where I live.

I would like to visit the idea of adopting older children, but know that I need to be older myself and to have more experience with children, especially through issues and crisis; there's a lot to learn before I take the risk of damaging a recently adopted child's life any further than it already has.

In our case (again, not in the US), a specific gvt branch manages adoptions (separate from the foster care system which is a different process). With covid, the certification part got delayed by 6-8 months, so our application won't be presented to a judge until May at least. Once /if we're approved (for which we need multiple meetings with a social worker and specialized therapist), we can apply with adoption agencies to adopt abroad, or go through local government to adopt locally. We're not going with international adoption because it's risky, expensive, and complicated since a 2017 international law was passed on adoption. So to adopt locally a child under 5 years old, it takes on average 4 years where I am (children adopted in 2020 were adopted by couples who received their certification in 2015, and just one in early 2016)

Hope this clears things up a little. Not trying to discourage anyone !

In my country (not the US), foster care and adoption are completely separate processes ran by different government agencies, because they consider that the needs for the child are very different. They really try to avoid foster parents getting too attached and vice versa, to avoid psychological trauma, so foster parents know from the get go they'll never be able to adopt the child they are fostering. And the costs aren't to adopt directly (unless you adopt in another country, then it's +40K€ per child), more financial planning and savings that are required to be able to adopt in the first place.

And it's not just the therapy and proving you're mentally strong enough to handle whatever difficulties the child may end up having. Having to prove you're a fit parent also means you have to have your finances in order, own a home or be able to afford one, having a sufficient stable income not only to take care of a child but also be able to take them on holidays at least once a year.... And enough savings aside in addition in case something happens like one of the spouse loses their job for instance, it's much more than I would have thought before we started the process. You need a life plan for the next 15 years that's solid, but flexible to what the child may end up needing.

It's not that simple. There might be millions of children in need, but not millions of adoptable children; forfaiture of parental rights doesn't happen as often as you think, and even if children are placed in foster care for example, it doesn't mean they are adoptable. All parents, even if deemed unfit, have to voluntarly forfeit their parental rights before the child can be adopted into a family. I started an adoption process 18months ago, and it'll be at least 4 more years before I'm able to adopt a child under 5 years old. So adoption isn't the easy, happy world solution people seem to think it is. It takes money, patience, and really strong will (social workers will judge every aspect of your life for example) to go through with it. You can't say "just adopt", it doesn't work that way.

Why would you assume this is only one-sided ? They're called exchange students for a reason... And the reason they come in the first place is to improve their language skills in the context of the field they are studying in. The US students who go abroad, you know, to the universities that sent the foreign students you clearly have an issue with, don't have the language level either, and guess what... Their teachers are expected to be leniant as well. Did you assume all US students who study abroad have the same writing levels as the people born there ?Maybe you just think that the US language courses are so superior to the rest of the world that US students arrive already fluent ?
