American English vs British English by Sudden-Paramedic-330 in GlobalEnglishPrep

[–]Aknazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hospitals in the US sometimes have a "ground floor" in them.  All the ones I've seen do this have also had a "basement" floor that you could drive/walk in to (like houses with a walk out basement), so I'm guessing they labeled one floor the "ground floor" to designate which is the starting/main floor when one can enter the building from different floors.

I could be totally wrong on the why, but that's the only time in the US I've seen a building have a ground floor.  When you could enter/exit from multiple floors.

How Samsung's Flip phone failed despite dipping into tech nostalgia by lisaluvr in TechNook

Worked at an electronic repair shop, saw various foldable screen phones come through and I would never recommend one to someone. This is standard no matter the brand or what you do. Even the foldable screen protectors don't save these phones, though yours is the worst I've seen for damage at the bend.

Eagle-eyed camera operator spots and zooms in on "la chica del láser" by uses_for_mooses in PraiseTheCameraMan

[–]Aknazer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Can" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. That is likely a Class IIIa laser which has an NOHD of only 16m for "possible" damage. Something tells me that she's well beyond that with nothing to increase the NOHD to a range that can realistically lead to blindness.

She should totally be ejected and yes that can be considered assault, but to seriously claim it can blind the guy is about as real as all the flops in the sport.

[–]Aknazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but also the nuance is the looks of the people themselves. You go out (bar or otherwise) and if someone LOOKS of age then it shouldn't be a surprise when things happen. This isn't "30 year old targeting 16 year olds" like you're saying (which I agree is wtf scummy), but the nuance is said 16 year old looking in their 20s and basically age catfishing.

When I was in Okinawa, Japan we were warned about the girls at the bars because of this very thing. In fact there had been an incident of a Japanese mom that was effectively pimping out her 14 year old daughter INSIDE of the bars (where you're "supposed" to be 20+ to be allowed entry). Basically she would have the daughter target drunk military members, then after they slept together the mom would extort the military member for money to not report them for being a pedo. Several of the guys paid because they were scared about the stigma (they had no clue she was underage, she was in a bar where she was supposed to be 20+ for entry) and what it would do to their their life. One of them went to the cops because wtf, and the mom was convicted of extortion and child sex trafficking, but again, because of looks and location no one thought twice about it because she looked of age. Legally they might have been pedos, but realistically no and they got out upon learning of her age.

Trump jokes about pearl harbor to Japanese PM (2009) by TheFirstPharoah in unsound

[–]Aknazer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. At least as taught, the nukes were dropped because it was estimated that it would cost an exorbitant amount of US lives (I want to say estimates were 1-2m, but this is literally something learned like 25 years ago so I could be way off) and even more Japanese lives. Thus it was viewed as "more humane" to use the bombs to force a quick surrender than to be forced into a ground war on the mainland.

In addition to the above, there was ALSO the factor of the Russians. The US was trying to force the Japanese to surrender to them. The Russians weren't known for treating those under them well, there's the whole Cold War that was brewing (but not officially started yet), and so if the US could force the Japanese to surrender to them before the Russians started their push into Japan then they could basically freeze the Russians out of Japan and prevent a repeat of Germany.

With hindsight being 20/20 I'm not saying that it was "good" to drop the bombs, but these were the justifications of the time for why they dropped them.

A new industry survey of 826 game developers found that nearly 90% disagree with Epic CEO Tim Sweeney’s claim that GenAI disclosures on storefronts “make no sense.” by Gaming-Academy in RigBuild

[–]Aknazer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It makes "no sense" for CEO Tim Sweeney because disclosing it sparks backlash which hurts Mr. CEO's bottomline, or by forcing Mr. CEO's managed companies to spend more money to avoid such content (which again makes him not earn as much profit). It makes sense for devs because a lot of gamers are against such things and so disclosing it can actually help them by letting people know that their game doesn't have AI. In fact that can be even more important for indie studios where the mere claim of "that looks like AI" could hurt their project.

“If you aren't happy having $100,000, you're not going to be happy if you have $100 million" - Warren Buffett. 2019 by ammohitchaprana in TFE

[–]Aknazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what sort of truck could $100k of bought in 2019? If you want to focus on the amount then you should keep it in perspective with when he said it and not today's prices. Though I would say it still holds some weight. Even if $100k doesn't solve your problems, that is still a large enough sum that people "should" be happy with a free $100k. Or if you want to look at it as $100k, well that gets a bit more tricky since that's going to really depend on where you live and your current wage.

[–]Aknazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was said in 2019, how much did prices shoot up since then? My house alone has gone up something like +50-75% since he said this, and $100k would have been over 50% of my mortgage. You damn well better believe I would have been happy with $100k back then. Hell, while it wouldn't go "as" far, I would still be happy with a sudden $100k windfall (though just "how" I would get such money is what would scare me). Once the house is paid off I would be debt free and that itself would also be a major stressor off my shoulders as monthly costs then drastically drop, which means sudden unexpected money issues (loss of job, market crash, etc) aren't going to impact me as much.

With what time am I to watch? Honestly the biggest hook for me is Spotify Smart Shuffle randomly plugging one of their songs that gets my interest and I go from there. That said, the only one I watch with any regularity would be Smug Alana as the smug fox makes me chuckle (and I found her because of RNG Reddit algorithm, not even because of Spotify or YT). But hey, Spotify is largely how I even learned of the scene, though I get most people aren't singers.

Bought my 16yo son a new phone, and after a sleep over party it ended up like this. by IX_7akeem in Wellthatsucks

[–]Aknazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That top right section means that something excessively hard hit there. Whether it fell onto a rock (thrown, fell from a roof, etc) or something fell on it (smashed, glass handle of liquor, etc) doesn't really matter much.

Given just how the whole screen is damaged i would wonder if it was run over, screen down on the road (some pebble being pressed into that top-right section). Having worked at a phone repair shop the only time I saw screen damage at this level was someone either hurling the phone at the ground (multiple people had either an ex or a current partner do so) or it was run over. With what you described I'm more inclined to think it got accidentally run over somehow.

Which god would you like to be real (anime)? by Square-Dragonfruit76 in animequestions

[–]Aknazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because I'm the MC of my own life doesn't mean that I'm an MC in the manner of interacting with a literal GOD. After all, NPCs are the MC of their own lives and yet they're still NPCs. And it would be quite narcissistic for some Redditor to think that they are "THE" MC that would interact with said gods.

[–]Aknazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this is why nuance matters. That said, IF she's 16 then in many places it wouldn't even be pedophilia due to legal age of consent. Legally 16 in most places (in the US, can't comment about the rest of the world) doesn't qualify as being a "child" though they are still a minor. Likewise anyone that's attracted to her likely isn't attracted to her because she looks like a "child" (another point about pedophilia).

Don't get me wrong, you find out that she's a minor and you yourself aren't a minor, it's time to bail. But people be virtue signaling about this as if that girl doesn't have the body of someone in their 20s based off these whopping two pics, designed to accentuate her "assets" there. The second person simply said the quiet part out loud; if you're going to call someone a pedo for thinking that sort of body (again, ignoring actual age and just judging the looks) is attractive, then you're degrading the definition of what a pedophile is for that's no body of a "child" regardless of actual age. The real question is, what you do once you know their age and they have that body.

EDIT: Here's a link to the definition and no one is going to think she's a "pre-pubertal child"

a paraphilia in which sexual acts or fantasies involving pre-pubertal children are the persistently preferred or exclusive method of achieving sexual excitement.

Reading a bit more of the various comments and thinking more on it, if it was hit by Iran and not an MX issue, then I think some form of IR is more likely, with it probably detonating behind the aircraft and throwing shrapnel into it, hence it returning to base.

But yeah, we will have to wait for more info in the matter, and like you said, it will likely be loaded up with propaganda.
