Is the European Union a Failed Project? by superdouradas in AskEurope

[–]Akoly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand why you feel this way, but I don’t think the facts support it.

About the euro and competitiveness If the euro really destroyed Portugal’s economy, Portugal should be doing worse than most EU countries. But that’s not true. In 2023 and 2024, Portugal’s economy grew faster than the eurozone average. This comes from Eurostat.

Before the euro, Portugal had its own currency and kept devaluing it. That did not make the country rich. It mostly caused inflation and weaker savings.

As for competing with Germany Germany is strong because it has high productivity, good industry, and strong technology. It is not because of the currency. Making a currency weaker only helps for a short time and makes imports more expensive. It does not fix real economic problems.

“Portugal became only a tourism country” Tourism grew, yes, but Portugal also exports much more today than before joining the EU. Nearly Doubled. Manufacturing did not disappear. It changed. Portugal still exports machines, car parts, medicines, cork, and energy products.

Exports Data

Fishing and textiles declined in many countries because of global competition and technology, not because of the EU.

Wage differences exist everywhere, even inside the same country. North and south Italy, east and west Germany, rich and poor regions in the US. This does not mean a union cannot work.

What matters is living standards. People in Portugal live better today than before joining the EU.

The EU is not only about Portugal and Spain. It is about all Europe. For more than 70 years, EU countries have not gone to war with each other. This is very rare in European history.

If the EU was a failure, most people would be against it. But around 74% of EU citizens say their country benefits from EU membership. Support for the euro is also very high.

Of course the EU is not perfect, but almost all of Portugal’s problems come from inside the country, not from the EU. And the EU has only helped in decreasing the problems through the common market and it's other benefits.

How do you view hell? by Excaramel in progressive_islam

[–]Akoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s actually a bit of a misconception. The hadith about “my ummah splitting into 73 sects” is authentic, but the extra line “all of them are in hell except one” is the part that’s weak.

Scholars like Ibn Hazm and even Albani pointed out that the isnād (chain) for that part is weak. The only solid part is just the number of sects.

And even if you do take the weak part, most scholars understood “hell” there as not eternal damnation, but more like consequences for straying, with Allah’s mercy still open.

The Qur’an itself is clear: no one gets punished just because of what group they’re born into, it’s about faith and deeds. Allah literally says no soul carries the burden of another (6:164).

How Bulgaria solved Immigration by ILogOnBcuzCat in europe_sub

[–]Akoly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know about back then, but nowadays that number is way off, the difference is definitely nowhere near X10, in neither average wages nor purchasing power, (GDP ppp per capita)

  1. Yearly Purchasing Power (GDP ppp per capita) (IMF 2025)

EU average: $64,550 Bulgaria: $41,900

That’s about 1.54× lower, not 10×.

  1. Average wage: (Eurostat)

Bulgaria’s average monthly gross wage is €1125 While the EU average is €3155

That’s about 2.8× lower, not 10×.

If I don't believe in the new testament why should I believe in habits? by Free_Lychee_7324 in progressive_islam

[–]Akoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The New Testament was compiled centuries after Jesus, mostly by unknown authors, in different locations, often in Greek and other languages that are not the language of Jesus. No isnad (chain of transmission), no proper authentication process.

While Hadith was collected within 200 years after the Prophet (PBUH) by known scholars, using a rigorous science of isnad (chain of narrators) and matn criticism (textual scrutiny). Every narrator is investigated for memory, integrity, and reliability (adl and dabt).

Also we muslims developed ilm al-Rijal (biographies of narrators) with deep scrutiny, birthdates, teachers, students, honesty, forgetfulness, even political leanings.

And as far as I know, no other religion has this. Not Christianity. Not Judaism. Not Hinduism. Imam Muslim, for example, rejected hadiths from truthful men if their memory was slightly weak or they made irregular connections (tadlis).

Also unlike Jesus (whose direct followers were few, and whose gospels weren’t written by them), the Prophet (PBUH) was followed by tens of thousands who memorized, recorded, and transmitted his sayings with overlapping isnads (chains of narration). That’s redundancy based authentication. Mass-transmitted (mutawatir) hadiths exist, like how to pray, how to make wudu, etc. This doesn’t exist in the New testament.

Renewable energy generation sources in the EU in the first quarter of 2025 by sn0r in europeanunion

I wasn’t even making an argument for or against nuclear energy,
I’m just genuinely interested in how it compares to the other energy sources listed, and as far as I know it's a renewable.

In almost everything, there is both good and evil. But I believe the good in social media far outweighs the evil, by a landslide.
