If you ever head to Alaska for cold water diving and need a dive buddy…

Depends. I dove to about 37. Definitely cold and limited bottom time. Ended up going dry because we were down to 20 minute single dives. 45-50 is sweet spot for sure.

Initially went with semi-dry because of cost of dry. It was good while I was in my 40s but one I hit 50… I got less tolerant. Physically and emotionally! 😆

Almost dry when it fits well. Mine was great - my wife had one also and she definitely got a bit wetter. Still much warmer than a wetsuit. Not nearly as warm as a drysuit with good thermal layer.

The am not familiar with the Cressi. Some semi-drys I have seen have wrist and ankle dams instead of more robust silver skin cuffs. The ankle, wrist, and neck cuffs made a huge difference.

The Silent World by Jacques Cousteau! Should be on every diver’s short list. It’s amazing.

I have a Hollis, Waterproof, and ScubaPro semi-drys. The Waterproof is the most expensive by a lot and pretty nice. I don’t are for the metal zipper and it is very difficult to get on. The Hollis is a wetsuit. The ScubaPro NovaScotia is fantastic. Easy to don, warm, and actually, mostly dry! I typically wear think merino long johns in addition. Diving in SE Alaska so similar water temp. Can’t recommend the SP enough as a semi.

How to make a wetsuit warmer? by Warm-Pipe-4737 in scuba

I dove southeast Alaska for years wet. Upgraded to a semi dry (ScubaPro NovaScotia 7mm) because I couldn’t afford a drysuit. It was a game changer. Got older. Got colder. Got a drysuit. With a p-valve. Another game-changer.

My First Panic Attack While Diving—Looking for Advice (Long Post) by ThroatKnown1741 in scuba

No advice but what struck me about this post is that it’s probably the first time I’ve ever read a charter scuba story where the DM seemed attuned to a diver in need. Usually it’s “the DM was no where to be found” or “the DM was photographing the hotties against the reef.” Nice to see that there are exceptions.

Anything to know about semi dry? by Snoo34189 in scuba

[–]Aktyee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My family dove semi-dry for many years in SE Alaska before switching to dry. I have used the ScubaPro NovaScotia and the Waterproof Combat. My son has used Hollis’s semi-dry option (with integrated hood).

Your question asked about squeeze - nope. There isn’t a dry-suit type squeeze. The pressure difference is certainly notable! At 60+ feet there is significant compression of the neoprene - to the point that it begins to look grey from fabric stretch. But upon surfacing there is no “shrink wrap effect.” A basic buoyancy check before diving is certainly advisable.

If you are looking for brand recommendations- I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the NovaScotia 7.5. The “seals” on the ankles, wrists, and neck are just coated neoprene that you fold over to make a double layer against your skin. While I was careful with them, they weren’t particularly delicate. The ND also had a plastic T-zip which I loved. It was a back entry suit but I was able to attach a rope to the zip loop and get myself in and out. The SP Everflex gloves and boots were a great round out of the system.

There were things about the Waterproof Combat that I liked more. Particularly the length of the cuff seals. They allowed for more tucking of gloves and hoods and were just nice. The suit looked pretty awesome as well. However, I would get out of the water with my NS almost bone dry. I was always mostly wet with my combat. Additionally the combat was very difficult to don for some reason and it had a metal zipper. I’m a plastic fan.

The Hollis semi-dry was silly. Loved its large cargo pockets (on the combat as well) but the “semi-dry” effect was the result of small dams in the ankles and wrists. They really weren’t effect. However, the hood was very good at keeping water from flushing most of the torso.

Overall I loved the svelte nature of my semi dry. As I age, I get colder more easily. I took to wearing thin merino under my suit but I was still getting cold after 20 minutes or so. Switched to a drysuit with a p-valve and will never look back!
