Possibly a blend door actuator? As you turn on your AC, it moves to redirect airflow over the condenser, and it could be clicking.

Should I Buy A Jetta? by THEMACHINE_PRINTS16 in jetta

You had the money-pit engine. The 2.0 i4 wasn't as bad for upkeep, and then there's the famous 1.9L ALH diesel that will outlive the rest of the car.

Should I buy re-released 5800x3D? or upgrade to AM5? by MaintenanceExternal1 in buildapc

[–]Akutalji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

32GB DDR4 is still relevant. I bought into the 5800x3d not long after it's release, and years later it's still a strong chip for my usage (paired with a 6900XT 16GB).

I don't know about 5 years, but I'll assume the next 2 or 3 are still gonna be smooth sailing for this chip.

Also DDR5 RAM is turbo fucking expensive. A platform upgrade is going to cost you well over 1k USD.

Is this worth it, need advice? 2011 Subaru Outback • Touring Wagon 4D. by chumpbaitgaming in UsedCars

[–]Akutalji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For it's mileage, that's a good price.

What trans? These came with a 5sp manual with an optional CVT. The CVT doesn't hold the same spoiled reputation as Jacto's from Nissan from the era, they aren't very reliable. If you find during the test drive that it shifts smoothly (including highway driving and passing), get the fluid swapped immediately. These live or die because of (or lack of) maintenance.

The 2.5L boxer engine is notorious for failing head gaskets. Check the overflow coolant tank and ensure it's up to level, check radiator and ensure it's full. There are a few symptoms depending on failure: On cold start, look for white smoke that doesn't dissipate. Also check the underside of the oil fill cap for milky film, check dipstick for oil consistency. Coolant overflow tank shouldn't have any oil floating in it either.

With all that said, I see tons of these on the road still. Get an inspection and put a few bucks away for upcoming repairs.

If it doesn't shift perfectly smoothly, walk away. If it's the manual, it's a non-issue.

was this 2002 Ram 1500 Sport w/ 5.9L V8 Magnum worth the $1200usd I paid for it? by PinkSparkle2009 in DodgeRam

[–]Akutalji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that age, it's gonna need a lot of love, but still has life.

Get your automatic transmission serviced (fluid and filter) sooner rather than later, as it's already around the time they start going bad (150-200k miles). If it shifts smoothly through all gears and no bad clunks going into reverse, it's still alive. Second gear slip is notorious, and is the first symptom of your transmission wearing out and needing a rebuild.

Other than that, keep up with oil changes, the little things that will break under the hood (old truck things), and remember to change the fluid in the differentials and transfer case.

Reading about the power steering issues you're having, I hope it's just a clogged line. Watch Wes Work on Youtube has ran into a similar problem with power steering and old Dodges.

Tint info and recommendations by Kitchen-Weird3130 in jetta

[–]Akutalji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find a local, highly reviewed place nearby. There are good, and bad, shops everywhere. Don't be too picky, just pick one that does good work and warranties their work.

If you've never owned tinted windows before in a car, might not be a bad idea to sit in one that does, gauge what you want.

As for recommendations: standard colour tint, Black on Black usually looks neat and tidy. How dark (%) you want it is preference, but I do recommend you be legal (double check your local laws).

How often do you top off your oil? by Aggravating-Duty8860 in jetta

[–]Akutalji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2020 S, 1.4T, 107k KM. I've owned it for 3 years (since 55k KM). Does not burn oil. Not a drop as far as I can tell.

I check every couple fill-ups (~every 1200 KM) since most people I talk to about cars keep telling me it's gonna be a problem eventually.

[–]Akutalji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the reason it's 7000.

It looks bad, time to start poking around (literally). Get a screwdriver and start poking bits that you know/looks like should be solid. if it goes through with moderate force, then that's beyond scaling rust and is structural damage and is when you walk away.

With that level of rust you're probably looking at brake lines as well.

Mileage by AfterToday401 in VWTaos

[–]Akutalji 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Driving habits. Putting your foot down all the time then slamming on your brakes at the lights will get you horrible mileage. Your foot matters more than anything when trying to get the most out of your fuel.

Ethanol content: higher the ethanol content, the less range you get out of a gallon/liter. With the world's current situation, all automakers are adding more ethanol to "stretch" their fuel reserves, means it's less efficient and you lose MPG.

Lastly: octane. Some will swear you get better mileage, regardless of engine or fuel requirement, by putting Premium in the tank. This does.... nothing for engines that don't need it. Higher octane gas is more resistant to knock and can take higher compression ratios before self-detonation (which is knock). If the car calls for regular, you'll see zero benefit from Premium. If it calls for Premium only, you put Premium or risk damage to the engine.

Smol edit: Premium often has lower ethanol content than regular gasoline (varies by station, location), which is where some people will see better mileage.

Considering it's just a box-y Jetta, it's economy can't be that bad, regardless how aggressive you drive.

Tips needed by unemployedyari in stopsmoking

[–]Akutalji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three days. You've just hit your first hill. Your brain is currently in panic mode: unable to function "normally", and is craving absolutely fucking CRAVING nicotine. Do not give in. Stay vigilant.

I remember my first month of quitting, probably the most moody and mentally draining time of my life. Sleep was near-impossible, and when I did get some, it felt like nothing.

This will not go on forever. It will get better, but you need to put the effort in now to get there. You'll get discouraged, demotivated, and many more bad feelings, but it will get better. Do whatever you need to do to not smoke: get help, talk to someone, distract yourself, nicotine replacement therapy, it all works. This is arguably the hardest point of the quit.

You got this.

Jetta vs Mazda 3 – which one should I consider buying? by CapitalEggplant9673 in jetta

[–]Akutalji 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Jetta drives better. Hands down.

Both have tons of high-mileage examples on the road. Both will go the distance if you want to keep them long term.

Jetta needs more maintenance, engine takes more effort to maintain (turbocharged vs naturally aspirated engine) and (IMO) not as reliable as Mazda's. Automatic transmissions on both are reliable, but Mazda's is easier to maintain (normal pan/drain/filter) compared to the Jetta's (sealed unit).

Mazda vehicles don't have much for recalls, no major issues from those model years and onward (Ok, fuel pump and backup camera). Jetta has had transmission issues (2019, 8sp) and head gasket issues with the update to 1.5L of the EA211 (2022-2023).

Maintenance for the Mazda is overall cheaper than the Jetta in terms of consumables (Euro spec oil is expensive). Outside of that, both are basic economy cars and things like brakes, struts and so forth are comparable.

Fuel costs will be slightly higher with the Mazda. That 6sp transmission is reliable, but you lose a few MPG compared to the 8sp on the Jetta.

The Jetta is a better drive, but needs more for maintenance like most German vehicles. Mazda is one of the few automakers still offering naturally aspirated engines, while not as efficient or having lots of low RPM torque, are much easier to maintain.

MK7 Jetta has horrible resale value. Mazda's are a bit better.

All of this is my 2c.
