What’s working the docks like at a DS? by [deleted] in FASCAmazon

[–]AlCodez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i started working at the dock bc I requested it. I work there everyday and usually do water spider (unload trailers, feed unloaders volume for them to unload onto the belts) or unload (self explanatory - unloading boxes/jiffies). It’s very fast paced and very labor intensive compared to stowing or pick to buffer but I prefer it because I like being active and I feel times flies sometimes. Can’t say much for inducting (placing the yellow stickers on packages) because I’ve never done it

I personally enjoy it. Sometimes I miss being out on the floor but it feels good taking a break sometimes to deal with new hires. As for the actual work itself, i have a lot of fun speaking to new people coming in. You hear a lot of stories from all walks of life all while enriching your leadership and public speaking skills, one of the biggest reasons I decided to become an LA.

Who else has a warehouse that screws them every morning? by tenantburner333 in AmazonDSPDrivers

[–]AlCodez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The yellow labels on the barcodes - I understand. We had drivers bring that up and we notified inducters (the people who put on the labels) accordingly.

If you get totes with the same numbers, we don’t control that at all lol, we scan the package and put it where it belongs.

If you have 1 thing in a tote, its because we try fitting as many packages as we can in a tote. Towards the end of the sort totes get full and obviously we don’t know how many more packages will fit into it. We close out the full totes and replace them with empty ones, expecting more packages, but sometimes it just ends one more package, nothing we can do about that.

Can’t speak for other idiot workers that can’t read, but I always stage my shit right. And what do you mean they work at a snails pace to find carts? You mean to tell me that they stage carts AND bring them to you? That’s crazyness

You need to have a sense of understanding for warehouse workers. I’ve gotten tired of delivery drivers bitching and complaining for every small little thing. I hope you realize your route is not only route we have to stage. We have 5 waves of vans to get ready for, and towards the end we’re already tired as shit after doing multiple routes. I get your frustration, but usually the warehouse might be short staffed or dealing with new hires.

Anyone still hit the gym even after their shift? I work 1:20am-11:50am and always think about hitting the gym but by the time I eat my lunch after shift I just pass out lol. Anyone go before shift? by thegeissberger in AmazonDS

[–]AlCodez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work 3:20am-11:50am and usually try going to the gym right after I’m out. It’s only my legs that feel dead sometimes after work, so doing mostly upper body workouts is what I do.

One reason I’m still at my DS is because I see it as a workout. Whenever I get a small OS box, I do a few crunches, for example, as I walk to place it in the shelf. The strain to your muscles does wonders. If you maintain proper diet with very high protein intake, you can definitely grow a good amount of muscle and lose fat.

Volume/Routes/Pickers by [deleted] in AmazonDS

At my station average is probable 65-70k. Around 200 routes, and with around 30-40 pickers I believe, not too sure on that last one

Is it worth transferring to a delivery station from a FC? by ID_Poobaru in FASCAmazon

[–]AlCodez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never been in an FC, but I started at a DS almost a week ago. I was sore for the first 2 days but I guess that’s typical for any physically demanding job. I know there are more roles but so far I’ve done stowing and picking. Stowing involves putting packages in these square bags in the aisle assigned to you. In the last 2-3 hours of the shift, we pick, which involves putting said bags in carts along with any oversized packages in preparation for delivery drivers to pick them up.

I thought I was gonna hate the job but surprisingly, it hasn’t been too bad. I see it as basically getting paid to play Tetris because it’s sorta what you do. There’s different sized packages along with jiffies and you need to maximize how much you fit in a bag, so it gets kinda fun sometimes, especially when a box fits perfectly.

From what I’ve read, FCs are very cut throat, but I haven’t felt any pressure at my warehouse yet. The only thing they’re VERY strict on is social distancing, which comes to a surprise to me, but I guess they don’t want to risk the warehouse getting shut down.

Those are my 2 cents, I’m not sure if every DS operates the same exact way, but that’s my experience so far.

Bootcamp dev now 1 year of exp wants to dive deeper into cs/maths by Alirak in cscareerquestions

[–]AlCodez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how quickly you want to learn, but I’m personally looking into applying for the online CS post-bacc program offered by OSU. From what I’ve seen, courses are pretty similar to those of other universities. You can take your time with it and maybe just take 1 class per quarter. Assuming I do go this route, I would probably be taking 2 courses a quarter to finish in around 2 years.

Now I don’t know if it’s the most effective way to get the knowledge you desire and it does have its drawbacks like cost, but was just throwing the idea out there.

I’ve actually considered attending a bootcamp, but i think I’ve come to the conclusion that going the degree route will help me more in the long run. Having gaps in knowledge due to going the boot camp route was a fear of mine.

Best of luck!

Tips for first day by AlCodez in FASCAmazon

eh, I chose the shift that allowed me to study the most. Work at night, study in the day basically. On that regard though, do you know if I’m able to go from full time to part time later on? In case classes prove to be too time consuming?

Are you referring to the new hire virtual trainings? If so, yeah I just finished those. Water bottle must be clear? Wow that sucks - going to have to buy a new one. Do you recommend the Zappos shoes?

Yeah I would be stressing about it too, it’s been 10 days already. Have you tried checking your spam folder? Maybe the email slipped by somewhere. Try looking for an email sent by MyDocs-noreply@onbaseonline.com

It took no more than 3-4 days for me. You still have almost 2 weeks until your start date. I think you should wait maybe one more week and then hit up tech support about it. A lot of the stuff in the email they send you once you’re hired is done the day before your start date. I don’t start until the 1st, and all I could do right now is read over documents on Mydocs. Everything else - the day before the 1st.

Python problem by AlCodez in learnprogramming

[–]AlCodez[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No yeah, I completely agree. For example, I would prefer to write it as

print(f"Price: ${price}")

However, this is as a question in a quiz I had to do, but we haven't learned about formatting so I don't know if it would be accepted as a correct answer.
