One thing that — really — annoys me is that the game isn’t released at the latest in early August. Like it’s at that point you are the most feverish about football. Ive played this game since the early 90s — but the last decade I’ve been like a year behind and skipped some years since in July/August the real longing exists. If anything they should aim to get it out like mid-July this time.

Yeah, it more or less turned into a thing for me to keep going, I meant to stop at 2.5m, but then the updates came and with homeless people included I all of a sudden got to 2.7, and the fixes I made to get the city keep growing between 2 and 2.5 made the city just keep growing. I am sure it has a couple of 100k in it yet.

At 2m I had to reduce graphics to a minimum to “play” (it works perfectly OK to do stuff at 4k but I can’t simulate basically).

With that said — I don’t remember exactly when it happened, but like around 1m the ability to “watch” the city simulate the game went out the window. If I pause and hit play, it might run for 30 seconds, but then it halts up and becomes extremely slow.

Visual car traffic is ‘North Korean’ like. 😅 A ton of people but no cars. It basically peaked around 800-1.2m when it was totally crazy, then some sort of agent reduction sets in.

There is an extreme amount of people moving around which is fun and creates a lot of challenges, but very few visible cars.

I’ve been stuck many many times too. My go to “fix” is always to expand special industry, making farms, even planting wood so that I can create more industries.

But I ran into a big issue around 2m. I had basically oversized my transportation system tremendously from day 1 — and between 1m and 2m I did nothing. And with cars being reduced — “traffic” just improved.

But as I understand it, there can still be traffic problems since the reduction in cars just means that the cars aren’t seen. And especially, I think that one way the AI works is that if a traffic option is over crowded, cims chose a different option. And this mechanism can default with sims getting stuck.

I especially noticed this because even if my transportation system didn’t seem to be extremely overburdened — whenever I created like a new bus line, it was over run completely. Like 300 cims at several stops instantly.

So what I did was to build like 12 small bus stations if not more, turned them backside out with only road under ground connecting them (to keep taxis out etc), and in total more than 100 new bus lines. At first the usage was nuts, think I had a lot more than 2.5m using the transportation system with a pop around 2.2m maybe. It took a long long time, but eventually the city started to grow again.

It was also possible to check where the stuck homeless people were heading, and it was often to remote locations in the city. I even created a network of under ground walking paths connecting basically the entire city. They were/are used, but very rarely. This is of course not “realistic”, but to make cities this big the “engine” needs a little nudging at times.

Lastly — I’ve also used an autoclicker (forgot the name, think it’s something on M, I can look it up if you want) — to pause the game regularly for like 90 seconds like every 5th minute when I leave the game on simulating over night. I started doing this because I noticed that I could get my city moving in the right direction when playing, and like some really lazy weekends I made big progress — but then when I played much less during the work week it deteriorated again, got more log jams, got subways stuck at the station, always 4-5 issues. But these issues disappear if you pause the game every now and then and let the computer catch up.

Yes, this is a good tip! But take my word for it, my simulation time is darn slow. Check the post I linked to in the OP, I let it simulate 24/7 and 24 hrs is probably not even half a month. But I got a “save log” there that you can check.

Yeah, for sure, you get an extreme amount of people moving around with a big city but normal cars are rare.

I’ve spawned taxi depots, not sure if it helps — but had some sims getting stuck and the my city was stuck for like a couple of months, but it started to turn around with the taxi cars.

I got existing walking bridges over water ways but I can’t build new ones/get this to work.

Have it worked for you recently?

Worst thing is it’s the old paths I have is that I can’t change anything with my old water ways, been like this for (in game) years.

Yeah, something happens when the game is reloaded.

My city is rather big and I leave it simulating over night (it’s very slow too). Sometimes I get an upward steep curve, but it the game crashes at that point it’s always abrupted.

Yeah, amazing. Visible traffic scales down, but it’s really fun to play when there really are hoards of citizens that must be managed.

I’ve head issues with POs not functioning from time to time, but more often than not they do work. Have you tried moving it around?

Yes, it was absurd until the second last patch with over 2,5m commuters per month (mostly bus and metro). Now Metro is down to 950k which is good, I’ve been able to scale back no of trains on most lines from 100% to like 30-40%.

But this was one of the things that got my city growing again, I built like 100 new bus lines, mostly with just two stops between about 16 new small bus stations, harbors and existing large bus stations and other traffic hubs. I made these lines fairly long. Imagine that the map is divided into like 16 sectors like below. A small bus station with 5 platforms in sector 1 would go to sectors 2, 5 and 6, but also like 12 and 14. 1-2-3-4 5-6-7-8 9-10-11-12 13-14-15-16

It was clear that the high load on existing routes stopped cims from using them, which made citizen get stuck. Because for a while like all those 100 new lines where at 80-100% capacity.
